It's pretty much an in-joke for actors. Lemmon sets up the ideal situation for an actor to be in the limelight but then it all goes wrong when "the old character actor" who was supposed to be little more than scenery upstages him by doing something zany like drinking the ink.

What I got it to mean is that the actor was unknown for 20 years for a reason. He was so bad that the character actor drank the ink to put himself out of his misery, for having listen to that eight minute soliloquy from the guy.
