I had the good fortune to see him live at Roy Thompson Hall in Toronto last month. Alas he did not perform this, but what he did perform was extraordinary. He even signed autographs after the performance and chatted in Russian with members of the local Russian who turned out by the busload to see him. All in all a memorable evening.
Lovely, but Yuri Mazurok's is THE rendition of this aria. If I could go back in time to hear just one aria again, it would be the night I heard YM sing this at the Met when the Bolshoi toured there in 197?. He was an unknown quantity to all but the cognoscenti, & all 3,800 of us there seemed to hold our breath lest we miss a single glorious note. I've never heard an audience erupt like that before or since.
Fortunately, he recorded it, and I wish somebody would post it here.
I love your post - it sums up the extraordinary rush one gets when you listen to a voice that just hits you in the solar plexus. The great joy of listening to voices. I remember many years ago doing a session with Jessye Norman (Wagner) which reduced all the professional mezzos in the chorus to tears and thinking that if nothing else I was good enough to be in a recording studio with her.
Pavel Lisitsian - Yeletsky's Aria

Along the years I came to really appreciate his artistry and, of course, his voice. Not a "italian baritone sound", but an extraordinary sound.
In this aria he is superb.
Thank you for posting it.
