@Wolfsky9, Glen at his best? Compare this song to his earlier years: watch?v=s17Be3PZA8c&feature=related titled "Glen Campbell ~ "Where's The Playground, Susie". At that time his voice was better.
I am German and a great fan of Glen Campbell. Since I bought the LP "Anne Murray - Glenn Campbell" about 1980. He has that soaring, full voice, just a few people have this voice.
And of course this is a timeless composition of Jimmy Webb.
Best regards to Glen Campbell from Germany, Reinhard
one of my earliest music memories is listning to this song with my mum and dad i dont know why i looked it up after 30 odd years but im glad i did rip dad
I was overseas (England) in the late 70s and couldnt get much american music on their
stations. I think I remember a song Glenn recorded that ended with something about a "gravestone that lies forgotten",,I only heard it a couple of times, does anyone else
@iceland69able the name of the song is Last Time I Saw Her and it is on the 2-lp (cd) "Glen Campbell the Capitol Years 65/77" the song is copyright 1971 written by Gordon Lightfoot (as usual with Glen his version is better than Gordon Lightfoot's!)
@sbbinahee this is NOT that concert - - I have the 2lp set; and in all of the photos Glen is NOT wearing the "tux" (black bow tie and black suit) in any photo of the '77 Royal Hall concert! Any other ideas where is this? and is it available at all?? This is absolutely the BEST of of all Glen's other recordings of "Susie" and "MacArthur Park"
@tuc6100 RFH was recorded over at least two shows at Royal Festival hall. The fact is he wore what you see on the lp cover AND tux either on the same or different night.. I have a vhs 1980's copy of Royal festival Hall show.It is divided by the fact that in the first half of the show he wears what you see on the record cover and the second half consists of him wearing the tux. I guess they were two different nights. It's anyones guess as to why there are no photos of him in the tux on the lp.
@sbbinahee I only wish I could get a recording audio or video of "Where's the Playground Susie" and "Didn't We" from these Royal Hall concerts - maybe because he was in the middle of a sad divorce - but for what reason, these two are the VERY BEST renditions he ever sang of these two songs! and neither is on the lp he even starts to cry at the end of "Susie" and adds the part about sharing an apple not found anywhere else. Would there be a vhs or dvd of these concerts available?
@tuc6100 I agree it is an amazing performance of Where's The Playground' . Haven't heard the version of 'Didn't We' from this show! Maybe these two tracks were excluded from the vinyl lp because of limitations of physical space on the record surface...I am investigating the whereabouts of my vhs copy. I had given it to my brother some ages ago and have just asked him if he has it still. I surely hope he does and I am hoping these two songs are on the vhs copy as I can't recall.
What a fantastic version. So calm and controlled. He just completely owns the song. Another gem by a legend who doesn't get enough credit for what he has done.
After seeing this video, it brought back sooooo many memories from my childhood and when I watched the Glen Campbell Good Time Hour on TV, thank you!!
Actually, you are right about the date, but a few others who posted said this was in London. I think the writer of the song is on piano, but I could be wrong (Jimmy Webb).
Yeah, nice how an entertainer appreciates that "noise" going on behind him/her. Glen's a great guy. Love the screaming horn section. They get Glen really into the song.
I know what you mean - it kind of makes me nostalgic for the 1970's. I think Glen Campbell was an artist who epitomised that particular genre of music back then.
His ballad version of 'Galveston' in this concert broke my heart - it was slow, and with much heart-felt emotion. Quite unllike the single. He is Jimmy Webb's living Bard.
I'll try and find out which concert this is from for you - but basically I bought this from a bargain-bin of videos in a supermarket. If you look at the way he is dressed here, and his age and hairstyle, you can find many segments from this concert.
AS posted above, this is live in London from 1977. The Royal Philharmonic is backing him. This DVD receives the highest ratings, and is really Glen at his best. You can buy it online relatively inexpensively. Great concert, huh?
Jimmy Webb wrote a "sequel" song to this called "Still Within The Sound of My Voice" which Glen cut in 1988. Glen has performed the two as a medley at concerts, another fine Webb song.
It's on Glen's album from 1987 by the same name "Still Within The Sound of My Voice". Should be available for download on Itunes or similar service. It was a #5 country hit for Glen.
Searingzeal-- this hit me the same way. Even though there is someone far more than significant in my life, when I hear a song like this I look back and wonder where and how a past love is.
Yeah, I know. I've posted that question so many times, but have not yet heard a good answer. Sad. I guess I have to admit I didn't really respect or appreciate the song when it came out . . . too young to understand, I guess. But, wow do I respect it now. Full of meaning about love and life. Also, love the "over-the-top" screaming horns. Seems to get Glen charged up.
Great song! I love the full orchestra with blarring brass and strings. Not many performers could warrant this and Glen is a man with a talent that not many can compare with. Thanks for the post!
This guy is great. I've always been a fan. Has anyone seen him sing 'Macarthur Park' from the same concert? Far better than the Richard Harris version, I think.
When all is said and done, and all the music that could ever be written has come and gone, works of art like this will remain. Not only is Jimmy Webb one of the greatest song writers of all time, Glen Campbell has such a pure, God-given and effortless voice that it's like hearing the sun rise upon a field of gold.
Wow. Well said. Thanks for posting a perfect summary of the career of two extremely talented musically gifted people (writer & performer). I could not at all have said it any better. Thanks for your words.
I counsel young brides and grooms before they get married. In doing so I reference the lessons of this song. We humans think we begin to search for our loved one when we are adults, but we really begin our understanding of love and search for our soul-mate on the playground. "Where's the playground?" is writer Jimmy Webb's quest for the boundaries of unconditional love between two soul-mates. Think about it.
Pure voice. Been six days since my last comment and I can't get this song out of my head. Glen could sing the dictionary and I'd buy the cd. And he was friends with Elvis . . . given my YouTube name I feel I need to mention that.
Wow. Anyone else who sang this would sound like a . . . well, it's not the most masculine song ever written. But this is Glen Campbell who is cool. And he was friends with Elvis! Post the rest of the concert if you have not already.
he is such a good guitar player....unbeleveable....check out his clip on youtube singing a thing called love. I can only hope to be half that good. just breathtaking
