The ACR (final Masada version) has the charging handle just stick out on both sides (true ambi, no need for a strip to change it) and its moved forward.
The Masada (ACR) actually has a 10.5 in, 14.5 in, 16.5 in, and 18.5 in barrels. So it can go shorter or longer than a M4/HK416. Also come in 4 calibers, 5.56, 7.62, 6.8, and 6.5. Its a very modular/ adaptive weapons system, thus the name ACR (adaptive combat rifle)
Interesting. It can fire with the stock folded? That would be a great sell to specialty markets like dignitary protection, armed bodyguard, Blackwater types etc. As for military usage, I'm wondering how much heat the poly material can handle. Just 90 rounds at the range heats up my AR pretty well. Great features/options though for sure.
With is being a piston system, the heat is on the forward end and the places surrounding the piston and barrel are aluminum, with the inside being a steel so the bolt carrier does not ware it down.
It would be totally useless for the U.S. Military to adopt a new assault rifle that fires a 5.56mm. If they are going to adopt a new gun they might as well address the problems with the knock down power of the 5.56mm and go with a larger or higher velocity round. That said i do realize that this gun can be chambered to fire the 6.8 spec or 7.62 x 39 mm. The latter bein the round that the ak 47 fires.
Looks like they're trying to target the special forces market with this weapon; that is, being lighter (plastic), shorter than the M4 (folding butt), while still retaining M16/M4 parts interchangeability. Sure, it's never going to be a standard issue weapon for the troops, but it looks like an attractive assault rifle for special forces and SWAT use.
Well, the barrel is free floated and there appears to be free space between working parts, so I'm guessing it will hold up well. Remember, there is no gun out there (besides perhaps the AK47) that doesn't need routine cleaning.
Interesting weapon. Why does it take small companies like Magpul and Robinson to come up with new state of the art designs while Colt keeps recylcing the same old shit? New package same smell! I agree with OEFinfedel that the army would never touch it, not unless Colt or H&k bought the design which won't happen. On another note......
What does Masada mean? Sounds very "Arabish" which I know doesn't matter and I'm probably wrong, Just look how well Obama's doing.
thats right, it was built to be a last effort stronghold (maybe by Herod the Great) and in 72 the Romans laid siege to it wherein they had to build this enormous ramp to get onto the plateau that its built on and finally take it. The story goes that as the Romans got close, the inhabitants partied to be defiant, and when the Romans finally got through, everyone killed themselves to deny the Romans their revenge
Because small companies like Magpul and Robinson aren't as rich as colt, thus try harder with their products. Colt keeps pushing out the same shit because they dont have designers of their own, they just keep recycling Stoner and Browning designs.
AR 180 gas system was a better design I believe, glad to see Magpul picked it up. I have postponed buying a new AR 15 in favor of possibly the Masada. I am anxious to see the production rifle. I think the concept is good but I can see that this will need to evolve a little. Rough use in the real world will show weak spots in short order. Love the features though.
I am sure it would be fine...but it looks like that would be broken within a week of battlefield use. As I said, I am sure it will be fine. It just looks flimsy...
well it is only a prototype, so yeah. Just let them make some fininshing touches. But personally I think we should get rid of the 16 and replace it with this eventually.
I'm not as knowledgeable about guns as I wish, but I heard that the Masada is better than the FN scar, so is it? (I know that it's just a prototype so we'll probably have to wait to know for sure) Looks cool though.
They all have their strenghts and weaknesses. The SCAR is a good mix of everything, and the Masada is ridiculously versatile. And, the Masada isn't a prototype anymore. It was released at the beginning of this year for around 1,400USD a piece. One thing that this one has over all the others is that it's extremely versatile. It has barrels chambered for 5.56NATO, 6.8 Remmington, and 5.45 and 7.62x39 (the AK rounds) so that our special forces can use the enemy's ammo.
Would love it in 6.5. That's my beef with most weapons makers. No options other than .308, .223 or 7.62x39. And why no 16" barrel. I'm still sticking with the XCR. The XCR seems to have less recoil as well which would be great for full auto and three round burst. Also, Why the hell don't they have a two round burst. With a larger bullet like the 7.62, 6.8 and 6.5, two rounds seems like more than enough.
you have an XCR? how is it? i thought that rifle failed commerically (based on i haven't seen any gunstores pick up,and never heard from it since) i thought it did, and that kinda dampened my enthusiasm over this ( as this promises alot of the same stuff). of course, i have no expericance. not yet.
i gotta say pretty badass. ive been to combat and know how well are weapons systems operate. as much as i love the m16 we do need something new. and i like the built in compartments! i hope shes accurate. its not how much noise you make but its the hits that count!! oorah! mr. taliban meet my new friend masada!
Finally the US designed a real rifle I always make fun of peoples ARs and out shoot moast "hi tech" ARs with my Old Russian skeleton 74 (ps I have a ar10 so imp not just a hypocrite) gas piston finally
It only took the collapse of the Soviet Union for it to happen... :) Nice setup, I would make the stock fold both ways thoe not that hard to do, and a selection of calibers would be nice not only 223 not my favored by far
223 is for small fragmental penetrations only no power no massive exit.
Yeah there is I just watched the futureweapons episode on it very impressive. Actually the conversion is rather simple as all it has to do with is the stocks and barrel choices.
Yea, saving up now for the 2008 release. Has all the ingredients for a damn fine 5.56 rifle or 7.62x39. That is if I decide to trade my AK for a Masada in 7.62x39. (a featured filled 7.62x39 Masada is attractive compared to an AK)
yeah M1 is right. M16 barrels are very accurate, ive never heard a complaint about them. i cant wait for the masada. so glad i can get it in full auto!
Why is Magpul M93B Carbine Stock discontinued? Come on... bring it back... just for me on probably the prettiest stock for AR-15! UBR is just plain ugly... ugly stock!!
The operating system is derived from the Kalashnikov gas system but also using existing components that are battle proven. Of course it is not yet battle proven, it is not even ready for that stage yet. Much more testing to be done. That is the only way to ensure that it will be ready for service by whomever decides to buy/use it.
snake18b, both SIG 55x and IMI Galil already use a similar Kalashnikov gas system! Of course, they are not released for US gun owners except SIG 556!
BTW, I love Madas folding stock, but it seriously needs more rails for Vertical ForeGrip, Bipod, Flashlight (White Light or IR-illumination), and Laser (Visible or IR-illumination)!!
If and when the become availible to us civilians, I am on it like white on rice. They really thought of everything. The choice to use existing AR-15 barrels and triggers was a brilliant move. I seriously cannot think of anything they missed. This gun has it all.
We have HK 416s. The Masada is less complex, has less parts and easier to build than a HK 416 (I am assuming the 416 is what you are refering to as I am unaware of a 415 from HK)
I am seriously thinking of selling off some of my AK's or AR's in order to buy this rifle. I'm also the guy who said I will NEVER sell any of my guns. I was gonna get an mp-5 but this, it's just to cool so the mp-5 will have to wait because if I wait I know they are gonna pass another stupid Assault Weapons Ban and then I won't be able to get it.
I've been handloading 6.5 Grendel in large quantities lately, used to handload .223, and i've tried 6.8mm SPC. But if this rifle was chambered for 6.5 Grendel, it would be perfect.
I love the design and QD capability of the barrel, capable of swapping between CQB and DMR lenghts; ambi controls, cheek rest, all the goodies a soldier could ever want. I look forward to see this rifle made for civilian sales. I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

Only negative on this gun is that it's longer than a M4 or HK416 with the same 14.5 in barrel. But it's much lighter so...

Not when you fold the stock on the Masada. Then the Masada is shorter and lighter than the M4 and H&K 416.
