That's 1 pound of thurst forwards, not up and not opposing it's own weight. There is a reason propeller planes can't fly straight up. It's the wings that do the lifting, all you have to do is pull them along with a fraction of the force needed to go straight up.

All you need is a small amount of U235 to get a sustained reaction started and use the heat from that to power an electric turbine, that way you won't have to keep filling the fuel tank up.
