One question, I'm from Chile, I love your idea, I have the Google SketchUp 8, but I want to read the plans, I wonder if the measures you can say or tell me what program I can see ¿?. Thank you very much, and congratulations ...
Nice trailer! Wish I had the time and experience to build one, but I don't - so I bought one instead. Very pleased with it though, have just uploaded a video of it.
This is an exaggeration to say making a home. This is a professional development. Serious, well-structured trawl gear, which is the factory improvements contrary to the center point of connection, not only lies in the left fork, I have the same concept, for manufacturing in Hungary bicycle trailers.
LOL I'd like one that can carry 15 times that amount. After all how else would one be able to carry a portable toilet, a ice fishing tent a ten person Olympic tent, blankets a portable shower kit, books, portable wind turbine, battery backup (To charge by the portable wind turbine) Laptop, inflatable bed clothes and tools?
I got a trailer at a yard sale for $10 all alumunium I have is socked away for when the fuel prices escalate to levels that will ground eveyone then I should be able to ride my bike un challenged by texting irresponsible drivers.
when I was a kid I used to build huge bike trailers out of wood and two bicycle wheels, I used to find bikes out of the trash and fix them up, so I put them on this heavy wood trailer and tow them home.
love the trialer working on building a double decked kayak trailer for bikes but my axxrls are not working two tires one for each side axel cut in half one side for each tire but the axels keep trying to come off and they bend real easy any tips
The joint is from the steering column of a 'club car' golf cart. $10 bargain on ebay - and that got me two of them. New they'd be about $70. Absolutely perfect for the job.
I'm hoping to make mine soon. Doing a few draft ideas on Sketchup... will scavenge most parts. Also thinking of adding indicators using some cheap LED lights, colored covers, with actuator buttons on handlebars and long cables. The engineering problem there will be how to make that link viable for easy of disconnect/reconnect.
Recently posted some SketchUp plans. See description.
On my latest version I have a 12v dynamo. Bought surplus '12v rear brake light' that you stick on the rear window of your car. Hooked it up directly - no regulation - very nice.
I did make a complex power system prototype, including front/rear lights for trailer + iPod charger. Dynamo driven. Never really got used, and a bit overkill. Haven't tried indicator lights - that's some seriously fancy 'functionality'. Keep us posted.
@astronomerroyal do you still have the sketch up plans? my main problem is the piece that is attached to the bike all the way to where the detachable swivel begins, i like how it works but want to get an idea from your model
I bought it on ebay. Apparently it's the joint from the steering column of a 'club car' golf cart. It's female on both ends, so two 1/2inch bolts (with thread filed down) are used as studs to attach it to hitch and trailer.
I see it works really well! Now how do you build it? Got instructions? Sorry if I missed that part. Just would like to build my own of one of these. Dude that gave the forums link thanks! Lot of good stuff there.
do you think it possible to use a heavy duty dolly for the bed of the trailer, keeping the wheels intact as manufactured and then just customize the hitch?
Sounds heavy but otherwise seems reasonable to me. For stability I would recommend a trailer width (wheelbase) about equal to the width of your handlebars. It should be fairly stable even when carrying a full rubbermaid tub. I also found having fairly low pressure in the trailer tyres helped make the ride smoother.
@tearingmonkey probably a bit late but the reasons I would recommend against using a dolly is that the wheels generally do not have bearings as the are made for slow speed and small distances. If used on a bike for any length your are likely to wear out the wheel pins and pin holes (as many don't even have bushings).
@tearingmonkey probably a bit late but the reasons I would recommend against using a dolly is that the wheels generally do not have bearings as the are made for slow speed and small distances. If used on a bike for any length your are likely to wear out the wheel pins and pin holes (as many don't even have bushings).
When I was too broke to spring for one of those bicycle kid trailers, I used tie wire to attach a hand truck to a wooden closet rod with a couple of holes drilled in it. I used rope to affix the protruding end of the closet rod to the seatpost of my bike. I then wired a milk crate to the hand truck.
After testing it with a full 5-gallon water bottle, I deemed it safe enough for my 2-year-old daughter, who had the time of her life riding back there while her older brothers rode alongside.
It doesn't matter if it's ugly - it'll command respect everywhere it goes.
As for hitches, they're the most difficult part. It should be strong. Go to bikeforums 'dot' net ->utility -> several trailers designs there. Post photos and ask them for advice.
The trailer depicted in the video was my first and hadn't been given the sort of rigorous testing that one should probably do before promoting a design.
My latest trailer attempt is a great improvement on several levels, although still roughly based on this design. The new design I wholeheartedly recommend and intend to make the plans available once they're written.
I made this video mostly as a personal document and to learn how to use iMovie.
oooooo ur in trouble now tht u read this keep reading and something good will happen to u and if u don't the dark world will do very bad things to u A boy named Thomas was walking then he heard a noise in the woods He thought it was just a rabbit so he kept on walking then he saw a flash then died Now that u read this repost this on 10 different Youtube videos in less than 24 hours or you will see a bloody dirty face in the window and he will kill you with a knife HURRY u dont have much time
I think, this trailor has some good ideas, but I miss the view over the design. I am restauring a bike trailor from 1942 at the moment and I want to change the body to a crisis use. That means transportation of wood, natural herbs and water must be possible. Unfortunately the design was not shown in this video.
150 including tools and shipping. In terms of raw materials probably less than 100. All new parts. Local hardware store is expensive. wheels from Amazon (I know, I know).

It looks much more robust, and allows for better stability for a two-wheeled bicycle trailer as opposed to most of the single wheel trailers on youtube, and the internet in general!!
Thanks. The universal joint was bought on ebay. apparently it's part of the steering mechanism for an electric golf cart, a 'club car'. Expensive new, I paid only about 10bucks, and got two U-joints. It' the perfect size - definitely recommend it. The hitch frame is aluminium angle with rolled steel tabs at the skewer ends, for additional strength.
No, it's a lot tougher, more rigid than that. A short of wire mesh that is difficult to deform with your bare hands. I believe the pieces were from a weird modular shelving unit someone threw away. I salvaged them from the dumpster, knowing they'd come in handy one day.
Amazing what people discard. Yesterday there were the lower sections of four moose legs in the dumpster.

Hello, yes it is a quite a small trailer. It looked rather larger when I was building it in my apartment.
The trailer (including hitch) weighs 16lbs. At the end of the film I state that it can carry over 160lbs. Technically this is true; I have sat on the trailer, however, the most groceries I've carried is 85 lbs and that not only filled the XL duffel bag but also made the handling rather sluggish.
