  • One question, I'm from Chile, I love your idea, I have the Google SketchUp 8, but I want to read the plans, I wonder if the measures you can say or tell me what program I can see ¿?. Thank you very much, and congratulations ...

  • LOOK OUT! Theres something RIGHT behind you!

  • Nice trailer! Wish I had the time and experience to build one, but I don't - so I bought one instead. Very pleased with it though, have just uploaded a video of it.

  • This is an exaggeration to say making a home. This is a professional development. Serious, well-structured trawl gear, which is the factory improvements contrary to the center point of connection, not only lies in the left fork, I have the same concept, for manufacturing in Hungary bicycle trailers.

  • where is the link for the sketch up plans??

  • dumb video

  • you need a large box plastic container

  • love the song.

  • チェク ・私の ebike2011 を構築するは非常に安価に !

  • @ astronomerroyal - WOW, What a great trailer you built. I really like to build one myself. Great Work! ~ Biggs ~ TeamAlphaTaskForce

  • ummmmm i cant open the file type you provided

  • LOL I'd like one that can carry 15 times that amount. After all how else would one be able to carry a portable toilet, a ice fishing tent a ten person Olympic tent, blankets a portable shower kit, books, portable wind turbine, battery backup (To charge by the portable wind turbine) Laptop, inflatable bed clothes and tools?

  • I got a trailer at a yard sale for $10 all alumunium I have is socked away for when the fuel prices escalate to levels that will ground eveyone then I should be able to ride my bike un challenged by texting irresponsible drivers.

  • when I was a kid I used to build huge bike trailers out of wood and two bicycle wheels, I used to find bikes out of the trash and fix them up, so I put them on this heavy wood trailer and tow them home.

  • I got an old kid's trailer off of Cragislist for $25....

  • Nice design. :)

  • nice bicycle trailer, well done !!

  • fantastic, congratulations,,,,,,,,

  • Best hitch l have seen for a while

  • Did you ever post the plans on line? Thanks

  • i want one will yu sell them

  • love the trialer working on building a double decked kayak trailer for bikes but my axxrls are not working two tires one for each side axel cut in half one side for each tire but the axels keep trying to come off and they bend real easy any tips

  • @FurryKing19 you still trying i made i trailer tht works pretty good and very chep like 2.00

  • I want that Hitch!...

  • Actually the song is "Of Montreal".

  • I really love that trailer n want one like it lol

  • what is that first song?

  • can you somehow repost a link to the sketch up plans please.

my dads a welder and want him to make this for me.

  • throw a motor kit on there. that'd make the most legit bike ever

  • Hey, I just tried to download the sketchup file, but the server says that the file no longer exists. Any idea where it went?

  • links dead!

  • man I just built one muself.. FROM SCRATCH.. I did not have to buy anything at all

exept the bike, the lawn mower the shock absorber, and some nuts n bults.. asembley took about six hours n fue minits

  • muy buen trailer, quiero uno haci!!!!!!!!!!

  • @parcheoscuro

    uno "haci"?

    pfffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff

  • this is a truley ace piece of engineering. It could be what im am looking for. Im in Scotland £=?

  • Wow what a expensive hitch

Is that a PTO universal joint?

  • @WAFFENSCHUTZSTAFFEL3

The joint is from the steering column of a 'club car' golf cart. $10 bargain on ebay - and that got me two of them. New they'd be about $70. Absolutely perfect for the job.

  • I'm hoping to make mine soon. Doing a few draft ideas on Sketchup... will scavenge most parts. Also thinking of adding indicators using some cheap LED lights, colored covers, with actuator buttons on handlebars and long cables. The engineering problem there will be how to make that link viable for easy of disconnect/reconnect.

  • Recently posted some SketchUp plans. See description.

On my latest version I have a 12v dynamo. Bought surplus '12v rear brake light' that you stick on the rear window of your car. Hooked it up directly - no regulation - very nice.

I did make a complex power system prototype, including front/rear lights for trailer + iPod charger. Dynamo driven. Never really got used, and a bit overkill. Haven't tried indicator lights - that's some seriously fancy 'functionality'. Keep us posted.

  • Ah, sketchup... I'm using that too. Now I know what format to keep you posted in!

  • @astronomerroyal do you still have the sketch up plans? my main problem is the piece that is attached to the bike all the way to where the detachable swivel begins, i like how it works but want to get an idea from your model

  • Is that Chevelle at the end of the video with people talking over it? Oh wait its Nirvana hahaha.

  • Looks like a good design, since it doesn't bind and lets you lay down the bike.

  • that is awesome you should do a hot to make guide

  • how did you make the universal joint

  • I bought it on ebay. Apparently it's the joint from the steering column of a 'club car' golf cart. It's female on both ends, so two 1/2inch bolts (with thread filed down) are used as studs to attach it to hitch and trailer.

  • I see it works really well! Now how do you build it? Got instructions? Sorry if I missed that part. Just would like to build my own of one of these. Dude that gave the forums link thanks! Lot of good stuff there.

  • Plans are in the works, and will be free to any who wishes to have them.

  • Yes indeed keep me posted and thank you again.

  • Posted a link to a basic 3D SketchUp model. See description. It has dimensions and is fairly faithful to the latest reincarnation of the trailer.

  • do you think it possible to use a heavy duty dolly for the bed of the trailer, keeping the wheels intact as manufactured and then just customize the hitch?

    Do you forsee problems?

  • Sounds heavy but otherwise seems reasonable to me. For stability I would recommend a trailer width (wheelbase) about equal to the width of your handlebars. It should be fairly stable even when carrying a full rubbermaid tub. I also found having fairly low pressure in the trailer tyres helped make the ride smoother.

  • @tearingmonkey probably a bit late but the reasons I would recommend against using a dolly is that the wheels generally do not have bearings as the are made for slow speed and small distances. If used on a bike for any length your are likely to wear out the wheel pins and pin holes (as many don't even have bushings).

    Hope this helps

  • When I was too broke to spring for one of those bicycle kid trailers, I used tie wire to attach a hand truck to a wooden closet rod with a couple of holes drilled in it. I used rope to affix the protruding end of the closet rod to the seatpost of my bike. I then wired a milk crate to the hand truck.

After testing it with a full 5-gallon water bottle, I deemed it safe enough for my 2-year-old daughter, who had the time of her life riding back there while her older brothers rode alongside.

  • song?

    sounds like the beatles

  • Of Montreal - old people at the cemetery. Something like that.

  • i made one from an old lawnmore tires,wood,a pepe,and a basket.

it sucks..the wheels falls in line, the wood is rusty and borke, and its realy realy ugly.

i wish i had better matrials....i have had a time trying to get it to work.

can u tell me how i make a hitch that doesnt hit my back tire when turning?

  • It doesn't matter if it's ugly - it'll command respect everywhere it goes.

As for hitches, they're the most difficult part. It should be strong. Go to bikeforums 'dot' net ->utility -> several trailers designs there. Post photos and ask them for advice.

  • Are these legal?

  • Absolutely. Not only are they legal, the government should really be encouraging the use of bicycle trailers.

Come on Obama, get on with it.

  • The government doesn't need to do anything...

  • I have watched this video about a dozen times.

My trailer was completed in the last few weeks using ideas from everywhere including this video. Many Thanks!

    Be Well, Go in Peace...

    Dale F.

  • I do have a question, why did you not show how to build your trailer?

  • Thanks for the question.

The trailer depicted in the video was my first and hadn't been given the sort of rigorous testing that one should probably do before promoting a design.

My latest trailer attempt is a great improvement on several levels, although still roughly based on this design. The new design I wholeheartedly recommend and intend to make the plans available once they're written.

I made this video mostly as a personal document and to learn how to use iMovie.

  • Thank you for your response please feel free to let me no when you do the plans. Oh and the avatar on my page is a bicycle made out of PVC pipe.

  • @thepvcbikeguy Wasnt that why WE tuned in? Please show a how-to video, PLEASE!

  • This was a strange but interesting video, but I love it. I need a bike trailer. Thanks for sharing this video!

  • Yes, get a bicycle trailer. You will not regret it - if you live.

... getting tired of saying that. Please give your rats my fondliest rearguards.

  • I think, this trailor has some good ideas, but I miss the view over the design. I am restauring a bike trailor from 1942 at the moment and I want to change the body to a crisis use. That means transportation of wood, natural herbs and water must be possible. Unfortunately the design was not shown in this video.

  • Good Idea...the use of an axle joint.

  • Bro who's song is this...

  • The first song (about sad old people) is by Of Montreal. It's probably called 'Old people at the cemetery.'

  • dobre

  • So, how much did you spend on this trailer,I'm thinking of constructing one myself.

  • 150 including tools and shipping. In terms of raw materials probably less than 100. All new parts. Local hardware store is expensive. wheels from Amazon (I know, I know).

This was my first trailer, I've recently built number 4 which is better - 16" wheels, wider-but-not-higher (i.e even more stable) - but otherwise very similar. I'm actually going out with it now.

    Good luck.

  • good work

  • good work on the pusher trailer;I was wondering what parts(good u-joint on the hitch end) you used for the bicycle hitch section of the trailer??

It looks much more robust, and allows for better stability for a two-wheeled bicycle trailer as opposed to most of the single wheel trailers on youtube, and the internet in general!!

  • Thanks. The universal joint was bought on ebay. apparently it's part of the steering mechanism for an electric golf cart, a 'club car'. Expensive new, I paid only about 10bucks, and got two U-joints. It' the perfect size - definitely recommend it. The hitch frame is aluminium angle with rolled steel tabs at the skewer ends, for additional strength.

indeed, the trailer is almost indestructible.

  • is the flatbed made of screen material?

  • No, it's a lot tougher, more rigid than that. A short of wire mesh that is difficult to deform with your bare hands. I believe the pieces were from a weird modular shelving unit someone threw away. I salvaged them from the dumpster, knowing they'd come in handy one day.

Amazing what people discard. Yesterday there were the lower sections of four moose legs in the dumpster.

  • people throw away treasures, thankx

  • cool

  • i made a trailer. it's not the best, but i built it for FREE! i used wood from a construction site (in the trash pile), i used skateboard wheels that i had lying around, and some old paint. the paint makes it look crappy, but it's not a bad trailer. watch my video...

  • What's the title of the video? I'll take a look.

  • i posted a few video responses. those are just a couple. i have maybe 5 of it.

  • you fine sir have crafted a fine piece of youtubery here. the soundtrack is just class. Now whats this stuff about a bike trailer?=D No really, you could post that thing on make magazine.

  • you know that thing between the bike and the trailer, that causes the trailer to turn and for you to put your bike down? what is it called nd where did u get it.

  • I tried replying to your previous post. The thing your are referring to is called a Universal Joint. quite possibly one of the greatest bits engineering ever invented.

My particular one was bought on ebay - it's apparently from the steering column of an electric golf cart. I drilled the holes for the aluminum pins - this allows for quick release. The UJ can also be tightened via bolts (not evident in the video).

  • sorry to bother you again, but you've been a great help. How can i connect to universal joint to my bike? once again you really helped me out alot. I was making a trailer for my kids to ride on and just to move stuff around if you were wondering. Thanks again

  • I recommend you browse ebay. Mine was actually a pair, and I paid about $30 total. For reference mine take a 1/2 inch splined shaft, which I simulated using a modified bolt.

    I've (astronomerroyal) posted more info on this forum thread;

    bikeforums 'dot' net

    -> Utility cycling

-> The post your trailer thread (sticky)

  • man, you dont know how much u helped me. Thanks sooooo much. Nice vido by the way.

  • where can I get one?

  • nice vid... watched it all the way through.... it feels good to bike to and fro; weather and weather... make a movie... you've a nice eye...buenas suerte

  • Great video, hilarious! I'm seriously thinking of getting a trailer for my electric assisted bicycle. Try and hit as many dogs as you can and you'll miss them everytime...but are the dogs trying miss you? Do the dogs think you are trying to hit them or miss them? LOL! :D

  • As with most things, it depends upon how excited the dog is. I doubt the truly Great Questions concerning dogs and bicycles will be resolved in our lifetimes.

Yes, get a trailer. You will not regret it, if you live.

The reading is from 'Taming the Bicycle' by Mark Twain. Google it. Read it. You will not regret it, if you live.

  • Artsy vid...

Just checking it out from Bikeforums...

  • how much does it weigh? It looks like a nice little trailer!

also how much can it carry? ( lbs wise)

  • Hello, yes it is a quite a small trailer. It looked rather larger when I was building it in my apartment.

The trailer (including hitch) weighs 16lbs. At the end of the film I state that it can carry over 160lbs. Technically this is true; I have sat on the trailer, however, the most groceries I've carried is 85 lbs and that not only filled the XL duffel bag but also made the handling rather sluggish.

    Cheers.

  • Very industrious -- and plus, it can handle a lot more than my panniers.
