Willie Mosconi, who was the technical advisor for this film, can be seen in a couple of parts in this film. Listen for the line "Willie, give him the stake." by Gleason. He is the older gentleman with white hair. He was also one of the greatest pool players ever with a DOCUMENTED straight pool run of 526. He dominated the billiards world for many years and won 15 world championship titles between 1940-1957. If you read about him and his connection to this film, you will be fascinated.
Willie taught Newman to shoot pool for this movie. They spent time in the basement of a girls school so Newman could learn the game.
Willie once ran 13 racks of 9 ball when challenged by a 9 ball money player when Willie was in his prime, this was at 50 a rack, quite a sum in those days.
He disliked 9 ball because of the luck factor but that did not mean he could not play it. A true legend in his sport.
@dv713 Interesting how in the sixties, in The Hustler, the game was straight pool, and in the eighties in The Color of Money, the game had turned into nine-ball.
@musc124 segrims 7 took them over in the 40s.. you can buy a J.T.S Brown Bottle from the 1800s for ten on ebay.. I didnt know I had one till the other day..
@psychoanalyst yes it's straight pool. Not an ez game. My bf ran 44 balls b4. He plays like fast eddie and even resembles him. I LOVED Paul Newman in this. They were all good<3
@greg3d4u that line sums up the entire financial world - from street scum hustlers to mega-million dollar corporations. George C. Scott's greatest line ever!!

I hung around with some of the pros who played on the tour in the late 70s.
They had decided to try to make the game more appealing for television in hopes of generating more money for the pros on tour.
9 ball was picked for the force used on the break, the luck factor, and the generally more difficult shot making and position.
Straight pool which had a much smaller luck factor also had some not too interesting safety play, at least for an unknowing television audience.
