This was my favorite Ultravox album when I was high school! Used to try to draw the album cover all the time! Great production by Conny Plank too! I like the John Foxx years but they really took off when Midge join the band. A classic.
I spent many of my teen years listening to this album, and until now I didn't realise the chorus was part of Death in the Afternoon backwards. I just thought it was so layered and doused in effects, including reverse reverb, that it was nearly unintelligible. I always heard it as "oooh, good for Eden, my friend. How many will fall" and was always puzzled by the 'lyrics'.
bought this on cassette in 1982 when i was 12, their best album, arthouse, atmospheric, obscure, full of experimentation. great to see people listening to it here. they reformed in 2009 and i went along in sheffield, they played some it this album which was amazing
This was and is my favourite album of thiers. I had no speakers when i bought this, so for 6 months i only heard it on head phones... has a cool feel close to the war - think its the dreamy vocals and staccato sounds together?!
brilliant!brings back so many happy memories.i remember buying the album from woolworths when i was a kid.used to listen to it in the dark, full pelt with me headphones on!seeing them next month in liverpool.cant wait!
I thought Rage in Eden was first class and is easily worth better chart success, but to do that would the album have been so cutting edge and creative?. Still think they were great, I remember loving this lot when my piers were into Adam and the Ants etc, I think I come out of it all looking way cooler, plus without a white chemical burn across my face, like some..
Dead right, Ultravox really were a cut above most u.k. groups at the time. They deserved much more success than they had. Greatest group of their time, playing music before its time
I agree,if you get a chance to see this song live, grab it I saw them in Bristol last year and this is such a haunting tune yet brilliant at the same time, I waited years to see UV live, I was only 5 when they split
Vienna was a world wide hit...yes it was....but there was so many other jems that UV had unfortunately Vienna never got to number one because of corrupt chart rigging which was rife in those days.....hence shadd upa ya face got to number one or which ever way its spelt.....but in my eyes Rage in Eden is the best album they did....then Vienna...but thats my choice..many will disagree
I know that I was one of the precious few who were listening to this band when they came out, in fact for the first two years the *only one listening, and I was at the beach! A very strange movement which sparked many other bands and movements. Those in the industry knew them but they were one of those before their time and many times some are actually somewhat vaulted treasures.
very true except one thing I was the other one listening to them in my far country at that time [Poland] all thanks to our precious Radio III, I used to know Vienna, New Europeans and Astradyne then, now I know and love almost all their rich works and am going to see Midge in Krakow on 22.11.lol from Poland
When one says precious few, it's by comparison of the public, and those are in the millions (underground). I suppose every genre have their listeners who have particularity not necessarily needing to be told what moves and stirs the soul, but more by how these artists influenced the times. Can one put a harness on creativity? Would one want to?
Every Original artist is before their time a vaulted treasure, each utterly unique, leaving their mark in the world.
my brother was into new wave in the 80s and brought this album home. when he played it i was so absorbed by the lyrics in this song. fuckin GENIUS !! the tuning the radio fadeout is very clever
Such a wonderful band, i was born years after they stopped playing, but their music, which was introduced to me by my father, is still very amazing and different than the "music" we have today. Its hard to see that this band still goes unnoticed.
picked up the vinyl on a whim today because i thought the cover looked rad and lo and behold the music rules too :-D

So I took the song into Audacity and reversed it. Even then it's hard to make out the "I will remember death in the afternoon" part.

The digital remaster is worth its money. Especially the Rage in Eden remaster. A lot of live stuff on the CD too.

This could be the soundtrack of Germany in the winter time. The whole album has that dreary winter like feel.

Given the weather in Solingen today, it might also be the soundtrack of spring in Germany... But you're right!

thats funny, i remember my mum listening to this in germany in 81 when we lived there ( army days ).
has a dark, cold communist feel to it. great tune. watching these in nottingham in april, cant wait !!!
