Gus Van Sant and his cinematographer prove to be maverick cameramen all throughout Van Sant's "death" trilogy ("Gerry," "Elephant," "Last Days"). "Elephant" itself is a very audience-dividing film, but it is undeniable how beautifully shot it is, and this scene exemplifies that wonderfully. I myself am in high school and I wish that my daily commutes through the hallways at MY school were as abstract as this.

I agree with you for the most part. But I think the word "explain"is inappropriate, I do no think they were were trying to or even could explain why they did it. It simply is. Which is why it's brilliant.

The implications are 85% of the story. Gus set this up as a visual story more than anything else. The reversal shots set the tone of "vulnerability"...which is apt to highlight amongst confused and confident high school kids.
I especially love the creative way they shot him passing the girls and catching her glance. It worked out so well and flowed so smoothly (of course the slow motion helps).

There needs to be a modern high school movie that portrays school life down to the tee.
I dont think many have done that at all, everybody has had their experiences, but they are hardly ever recreated on the screen realistically.

the big idea, i guess:
the life of high school kids is artificial. it looks just like a dream.
obviously beautiful and not so obviously creepy.
this scene says more about why those kids became killers than any other scene in the film.
