It doesn't have a transit sys. like SF and Chicago cause it is a small community. Chicago is the 3rd largest city in the US. 2.7 mil people compared to 57000. The buses run during times that most students and workers are going and coming. Why would CH offer bus service to take you shopping outside of CH. Encourage them to bring in business and you won't have to leave. The system is free and that isn't likely to change. Its not a community without cars just a community with other options.
The buses do not run with any frequency on Saturday and on Sunday there is no significant bus service. Not even the Triangle buses run on Sunday. Why are there so few buses after 830 pm on weekdays? Not all the routes are logical; we need buses that go to the major shopping centers in Durham and Raleigh especially on the weekends.
yeah the free buses in CH are nice for sure...but don't expect them to take you home past 8, and don't expect them to be running anything close to on time. Some of the routes are a bit weird too. It's great in theory, but they just need to rework some of the logistics of the whole operation. I'm sure it can be done, since the Triangle is supposedly America's "smartest" region.
Sure, the busses are free, but you really get what you pay for. I'd gladly pay $2 for a ride if it meant that there were more bus stops, that the busses ran at least to midnight, that people would quit using my neighborhood as a park & ride, and that the busses were more frequent (e.g. not having to wait a whole HOUR if you miss your bus).
Having grown up in Chapel Hill, I can safely say that this "city" is overrated. Without UNC, Chapel Hill would be another dingy country town. Most busses stop running before 10pm. The bus is infrequent (if you miss your bus, you have to wait 40-60 min for the next bus). The bus stops are few & far in between. People use my neighborhood as a park & ride, because there are no convenient stops in their own neighborhoods. And Chapel Hill is NOT a city. It's boring!
Who could dislike a free bus service? I live in San Francisco, where the buses are packed every hour of the day, and they just increased the fare to $2.00 a ride, and the cable cars are $5.00 a ride with no return transfer allowed. SF can learn a lot from Chapel Hill.
@mixhaeld--I noticed that the last time I was in San Fran. However, one thing I did like about the MUNI of SF, however, was the fact you pay a $2 fare but you have the option of using a transfer ticket. When bus service in Chapel Hill was not free, you had this option too. One thing I see with Chapel Hill is that it tries too hard to be like San Fran. I can't even afford to in C.H. anymore :-(
However, I don't blame anybody who wants to move out of SF.
@gorillapea Don't come to Chapel Hill. The public transportation is overrated, it's not like what you'd get in San Francisco or Chicago. It's infrequent, doesn't run all night and there are not nearly enough stops. You still need a car or you'll be horribly inconvenienced. Unless you're affiliated with the university, there's nothing for you here.
Preach on, sister! This public transit system is the biggest joke. I've had RURAL towns in FRANCE run better systems than here. The schedules are incredibly stupid, the routes are inconvenient and hard to understand, and the signs are completely inconsistent. The people who praise this system have never left this tiny city and seen what a REAL metro system can do. I'd rather pay and have it work too.

I'm thinking about relocating to Chapel Hill. I found this video VERY helpful. The public tranportation system is a big plus! Thanks
