Additionally, many general use automatics have a more limited range than do most hunting rifles. There is no good reason why a legal US citizen who has no documented history of mental illness, or violent crime should be prohibited from owning and operating any sort of firearm they wish. I would personally like to see a return to nationwide unrestricted (pursuant to the above condition) open or concealed carry of firearms.Those not guilty of violent crime should not be punished for those who are.

The 'assault' weapons ban was based more on what a gun looked like than what it could do. Most deer rifles are far more powerful and dangerous per round than an automatic rifle. While an automatic is able to fire faster, the bullets are individually less lethal. NATO-spec bullets (which most American automatics use) are relatively small. In war, they are designed to wound a target thereby tying up several personnel in caring for the wounded rather than simply killing a single soldier.

School shooting, as horrific as they are, are a rare occurrence that is far outweighed by the deaths of young people due to drinking and driving.
Good policemen on the street is the only answer that can make a difference. (That is on the street, not in a car.) Neighborhood programs would also be a great help.

1) CIVILIAN models are redesigned and approved for sporting and MOST OF ALL Personal protection otherwise we would have never gotten them. Assault rifles are fully automatic, CIVILIAN models are not. hence not assault rifles.

The second ammendment says "the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed". Taking guns away and making it difficult to purchase a gun is infringing. How is he respecting the 2nd ammendment? You can't have it both ways.

Criminals buy their Weapons on the street, even in the UK and even here in Germany.
Here in Germany you can buy a fully automatic AK47 for less then 50€ and you can get a stolen G3 / G36 even cheaper. But even with this prices, criminals are using blank firing guns for their activities.....

Thor I agree with you completely. The 2nd Amendment is a safeguard against the government taking too much control. The government is ruled by the people and the government should never rule over the people. The 2nd Amendment was put in place not for hunting or hobby, but for self defense agaisnt government and criminals. If the liberals had it their way and took over the country, the only people that may have guns would only have inadequte hunting weapons, nothing compaired to gov't weapons.

I can tell you this, I live in a state in the US that has one of the strictest gun laws in america. Each state in the US has different gun laws, what is legal in one stat is illegal in the other. My state with the strictest gun laws, murders by guns is up by a record high. The next state over with the least gun laws is much lower on murders by gun.

Guns are a reality, however, and their possession in the law-abiding civilian population has a good effect, they are able to defend themselves. In the hands of criminals, guns can be used for bad effects. Good guys need guns to protect themselves from the bad guys and should have the best tools to preserve their most precious possession, their life. Passing laws to take away guns from the good guys while hoping that the guns that bad guys own will somehow disappear doesn't make sense.

Think about this, politicians who pass these laws should be the first ones disarmed. They have body guards with many guns protecting them anytime they are out in public, are they more important that you or I? Also security guards at the bank are good enough to carry weapons to protect the bank's money. Is your life not worth even more protection? You can talk about banks being at higher risk for robbery, but home invasions are also common and many are prevented through the legal use of firearms.
