  • FIA porfavor quita el circuito de Valencia y pon Imola como GP de Europa...

  • to blame Pironi for Villenuve's death is quite ridiculous...Villeneuve was in good spirits at Zolder. One can blame the crazy qualifying system at the time, the fragile Ferrari chassis and its unsafe seatbelt sytem, Villenueve's own 'on the edge' style, a lack of concentration...to blame Pironi is pretty heinous

  • As a GV fan I am pretty convinced Gilles wasn't trying when he was in the lead. The lap times back it up: when he was leading they were three seconds per lap slower than when Pironi was. Whether Pironi knew this is another matter. As for Gilles being in a bad mood at Zolder, according to his friend (journalist) Nigel Roebuck the last time he saw him just before that infamous qualifying session he once again seemed relaxed and happy. I'd rather blame the crazy rules than Pironi for GV's death.

  • Killed Gilles trust, his sense of rationality and ultimately his life! F**k you Pironi!

  • Pironi will always be the blame for Gilles death. Had he not done that Gilles would have been in a better state if mind and heck even alive today. What he did is truly unforgivable. Gilles was a honest and loyal man who honoured agreements. In 1979, the same GP he was half a second away from being champion, half a second from being one of the greatest champions, but he was magnanimous and let shcketer win (one of the worst champions) as agreed. For Pironi not to honour the agreement killed Gill

  • Pironi always seemed to come across as a bit cold. But he did drive for my fav team, TYRRELL!

Villeneuve was at times astounding and his death was horrific.

  • Great Commentators, Great Drivers, Great Racing, Great Era!

  • I think all this situation happened between Ferrari and Renault, who had planned those changes in the positions to make the race exciting and try to prevent the FIA from banning the turbocharged engines whick have been very helpful to their cars.

  • Ahhhh Giles... I wish you were here

  • this is it...

  • I think it's slightly unfair to blame Pironi for Gilles death. Yes, the preceding race may have contributed to Gilles state of mind, but ultimately Didier didn't cause the accident. As for the team orders,Gilles was a very gentlemanly person, and adhered to what he thought was loyal towards the team (the 1-2 with Jody in 1979 springs to mind, he could have taken that chance to win the championship but held back) - for him to be so annoyed speaks volumes.

  • F1 should really consider bringing back ground effects. Look at those minimal angle front and rear wings. It's no wonder these drivers didn't have any problems following each other through a corner and overtaking each other. On another note, the 1982 and 1983 drivers' titles could and should have gone to Villeneuve. Shame about the crash at Zolder. Villeneuve was a driver who definitely deserved at least one title.

  • Gilles was a gentleman and respecting Reutemann Schecter, but it is clear that Villeneuve was unique in Formula 1 so it will never be forgotten. The did not understand was always quick points for the championship is not speculation. Pironi brought death to the championship of 1982, a shame. Both rest in peace.

  • After overtake pironi in the last lap, i think gilles didn't expect that pironi would try somenthing in the last lap, a good and clean manouver but was a dirty attitude by pironi.

  • @Donfrak using this argument, Pironi woud probably say he didn't expect Villeneuve to make a move on him on the penultimate lap

  • @hugodrax71 but i think the team orders were to keep villeneuve in first position, if that was possible, to win that race and be able to figth for the champioship like they were planning; in that circunstances, where they were in the final lap, Villeuneve was in first position, didn't make sense that Pironi overtake him.

  • @Donfrak Ferrari did not have a championship strategy at Imola as San Marino was only the fourth race of the season, there were still 12 races left after this one...also Pironi and Villeneuve had equal status in the team, Pironi was not a contracted no.2 driver

  • Pironi was a very good driver, but he will never be able to defeat Gilles fairly. A fair and honest pilot like Gilles definitely would accept to be defeat by other drive in fairly conditions. taken by gilles'reaction after the race, that wasn't fairly.

  • two ferrari's fighting against each other - that's what we wanna see ^^^ -

    - unimanginable nowadays!

  • fantastic

  • @flipsidedogchop yeah, it should've had some McLarens to be even more fantastic, right, moron? :)

  • Good old F1 times with real competition.

  • I got a sweet deal for the FIA.

Bring back Imola in exchange for all the "Tilkedroms" on the calendar.

  • This was not a battle, while the audience amused Villeneuve, Pironi betrayed him. The betrayal of Didier Pironi Gilles Villeneuve Imola during 1982 caused the death of Canadian GP in training and probably also following his own accident, very similar to the excellent and superb Gilles in Germany. Could never drive a F1 and died on a boat. Ferrari failed to win a F1 championship (the 82 was Villeneuve's team was to him but betrays Pironi) until another Villeneuve won one.

  • @LuisValenti2001

    you make no sense

  • Following the death of Senna in a race held at the San Marino F1 race will not be so tragic history.

  • 0:30 Gilles passes on the OUTSIDE! of the old tamburello. seriously holy shit

  • you called Pironi a dirty guy...I replied to that

  • best fight ever.....

  • @Scope951 no he wasn't, he was a determined racer and proud (not to mention misunderstood) man...he actually led for most of the last 16 laps and was challenging or the lead before Arnoux's retirement...interestingly he also clocked the fastest lap of the race (before Arnoux's turbo blew up)...he was not Ferrari's No.2 driver as so many think...in his recent autobiography Mauro Forghieri, Ferrari's engineer at the time, described Pironi as "a correct character"

  • Comment removed

  • After watching racing like this in the 70's and 80's modern F1 is so boring

  • Prost retired on lap 6 with engine trouble, Arnoux retired on lap 44 with a blown turbo while leading...Villeneuve didn't put paid to either....there was no team order instructing a win for Villeneuve and Pironi actually led for most of the final 16 laps...Pironi had equal status at Ferrari, this is fact

  • pironi drove dirtyat the last turn..

  • Watch a real Brawl!

Gilles Villeneuve and Rene Arnoux at Dijon in 1979.

  • Get your history straight!

Nowhere near racing! Gilles had already raced & put paid to both Alain Prost & then Rene Arnoux in both Renaults. Then once lead was secure, communication w Ferrari instructed Gilles to slow down/take less wear & tear off car. Then, in the 2nd Ferrari, this cheeseball, Peroni doing nothing the whole race, challenged Villeneuve at the very closing stages of the race, when Villeneuve’s tires were literally decomposing! PLEASE!

    Two weeks later, Villeneuve DIED!

  • Great race, but James Hunt called it right, what a shame there wasn't a full grid.

  • Ah, the old times. It's so awsome how they did struggled for the 1st place. Today teammates settle their competition with team orders =/ What about the skills?

  • one ferrari with a front wing....and one without a front wing. wtf?

  • Pironi vs Villeneuve is the same with Senna vs Prost

You All.... hate this for Formula One SPORT?

  • Pironi always had a bad reputation character-wise. God rest his soul.

  • this was a great time, and possibly the best era of F1. even the announcing was the best it ever was!

  • Thank's so much for the upload!

  • I was only a16 yrs old lad & a rabid CANADIAN TIFOISI for Gilles. The Irony of it all was that the disgust was written all over Gilles face in victory lane. In1982 Scuderia Ferrari had constructed the Ferrari 126 C2 Turbo that was on par in power with the Williams & Renaults entries of the turbo era on that day in @ IMOLA.Yet with some ill mannered handling qualities that Gilles would tragically find out in qualifying @ Zolder Belgium & 4 yrs later Pironi would be dead in a power boat race.

  • So sad this was Gilles' last race.

  • Gilles Villeneuve was the most entertaining F1 driver that will ever live.

  • Pironi had every right to win this race...there was no team order for Gilles to win and he wasn't contractually a no.2 driver, as so many people seem to think

  • @hugodrax71 of course there were orders. what pironi did was dangerous and jeopardized both ferraris. no team would leave their drivers battle like this when they could get the 1-2. and you don't need a contract to be the no.2 driver. it is a code of honor as respect to the better driver in the team, the one that is after the championship. villeneuve did it to jody sheckter, too. so get this straight, guys. it's great as a spectacle, but it is no battle. it is pure treason.

  • @Stellarmasterelite Why would Villeneuve do that, he could have won in '79, but stayed behind a slower team mate following orders.

  • @SuperColossal33 he did it to scheckter because he respected that he was the no.1 driver...and he waited for his turn to be no.1, too. even though he was faster than jody.

  • @hugodrax71 also be aware that Gilles and Didier were supposed to be friends even outside the track. You really think you need a contract to back your mate up when he is fighting for the title?

    Told you, man. BETRAYAL.

  • @Stellarmasterelite there was no team order, even Ferrari said this...it was only the FOURTH race of the season. Pironi had 1 point going to Imola, Villeneuve had zero. Pironi had equal status and was targeting the championship in 82, along with Villeneuve etc. You mention a code of honour and the drivers shouldn't have battled in a 1-2 situation...so it was OK for Villeneuve to overtake Pironi after he lost the lead by making a mistake (two wheels off the track) the lap after Arnoux retired?

  • @hugodrax71 the code of honour is that no.2 always helps no.1. so if you ask me, pironi should have even allowed Villeneuve the 1st place, even after the mistake. of course it was ok. C'mon man, the guy battled for ages before '82 with ridiculously slow cars, he fully deserved the chance to be no.1 with a good car. and i told you: even if there weren't orders (which I highly doubt, because the old man loved Villeneuve probably more than any other driver ever), they were supposed to be friends.

  • @Stellarmasterelite you're ignoring certain facts here...Pironi was not a No.2 driver, he had equal status as Villeneuve. This was one of the main reasons he chose Ferrari in 1980 ahead of Renault who also wanted him and were prepared to offer more money. You're right, Villeneuve had a bad car in 80 and 81...but don't forget Pironi was also at Ferrari in 81 and had a terrible year with the 126CK.

  • @hugodrax71 you're tripping. you're trying to tell me didier pironi was on equal terms with the man that won the 1981 spanish circuit in jarama? and that, knowing they were on equal status, a great driver and sportsman like Villeneuve said "I'll never talk to him again as long as I'm alive"? that's a no-no, sir.

  • @Stellarmasterelite he was on equal terms at Ferrari, this is a fact. He did not sign a No.2 contract. And Pironi was also an outstanding driver.

  • @hugodrax71 yeah sure. we're talking greatness in the likes of j.j.lehto, aguri suzuki and other....legendary drivers. ah, ignorance is bliss, ain't it man?

  • @Stellarmasterelite you should know

  • @hugodrax71 @hugodrax71 t-r-i-p-p-i-n' i-d-i-o-t d-e-t-e-c-t-e-d. over & out

  • @Stellarmasterelite I really hope it is over and out

  • wasnt this the race where villeneuve was told to back off but pironi wasnt so villeneuve wasnt leading slowed up, sped up after reovertaking pironi then slowed down again

  • ولا اروع من هيك منافسة

    مو مثل ايامنا هي

    الفيراري وما ادراك ما الفيراري

  • Tuff.

  • Did Villeneuve win?

  • @gamrguy101 He lost...

  • @gamrguy101 He lost... to Pironi.

  • You just don't see that kind of racing these days. The bit when Arnoux was involved was incredible!. Pironi was out of order here but was a hero when Paletti's car caught fire later in the season in Canada (sadly his efforts were in vain). I was too young at the time but from what I've read/seen 82' was a crazy and tragic season.

    Great upload, thanks

  • who own this grand prix plz?

  • This is racing at it's best.

  • Real racing, in real cars! Not the rocket powered computers of today.

If only Gilles hadn't had his fatal accident, and Pironi hadn't suffered such terrible leg injuries. Formula 1 would have been amazing in the mid- and late-eighties.

  • THE REAL F1

  • two great drivers...didier and gilles RIP

  • That was THE REAL FORMULA 1 !!!

  • Shortest lived feud only because Gilles died.

  • This is amazing! Gilles was a gladiator, they both were.

  • Boring track? i dont think so.....

  • THAT S RACING

  • @rdtli yes this is racing, but not just racing, it' s also pironi betraying his friend villeneuve, ignoring a code of honour (something villeneuve never did, remember scheckter) and team orders (SLOW), and causing villeneuve to be sooooo mad at him that at the next race in zolder, he was so full of anger during the qualifications already that he got himself killed. not gilles nor jochen mass are to blame for that crash, pironi is, and he knew it.

  • @cle0bury sorry mate ...gilles died in zolder because of a wrong move by jochen mass...and team orders sucks... the word´´team´´ should be used by sharing information..setups...and nothing more...what we see here is racing in pure style and form. The word ´´friends´´ should be used outside the track...when you play soccer with your ´´friends´´ you don t need to lose because they re your friends...you want to win..and that s the spirit of the sport...in anyway its paractised..
