@naveedmohsin Get your chemistry in check, make sure your lighting and water flow are good. coraline will naturally grow if the tank is in good health.
One very important aspect when growing coraline Algae is the skimmer which removes the aquarium waste. I see many aquarist end up with brown algae when trying to grow the good stuff. This is due to heavy bio load and excessive dosing of chemicals. Check Phosphate regularly.
@j0hnlhew What are your KH and pH levels. both are linked together I need numbers and gallon size of your tank to give you a correction if needed. Higher KH values are ok as long as pH stays stable and in 8.0 - 8.4 range.
i have like a marineland lighting system (kinda cheap and crappy{$50}). Do i need like a heavy duty lighting system? if so what light would you recommend for a 20gal reef tank? and i want coralline!
@MonsterFishBreeder actually weak lighting that's got a good amount of blue spectrum is great for coraline algae. I've seen sumps at my local fish store that where covered with coraline and only had the ambient lighting of the stores ceiling fixtures.
no,its not, the brown algae seems to be on the brim as well as the stem . I noticed it on only a few of the polyps but it looks to be spreading . But thanks for the info you did give me. Now i have to figure out how to clean them up and find out if its harmful to it.
I have a War coral that was BRIGHT BRIGHT Neon green. I have brown alga which i got under control but its on the coral and it looks ugly. Is it harmful to it? and if so, is there any thing out there that i an use to get it off?
@Bluesidian If the algae seems to be originating from the heads of the polyps, it may be the coral ejecting its Zooxanthella which indicates coral stress. the ejected Zooxanthella will look similar to brown algae.
Awesome Job! Don't pay attention to the negative comments, if these people can't realize your doing this FOR FREE and that you didn't have to share this with any one then forget them. If they think they can do it better then let them give it a try. Nice job.
I have a 55 gallon reef tank about 5 yrs old and the coralline algae has always grown very well take a look when you get a chance you have a very cool system. All mine is hang on tank. I might get a sump someday.check out jake2622.
Very informative vid. Im using calcium hydroxide and dripping it slowly at night once a week, and adding my reef buffer in the day after. Coraline develops slowly. Im also trying the method you are using with the scrapping. Just wondering when will i be seeing more results if i scrape once every few weeks? will it increase Faster? Thanks
I have a 37 gal reef tank that is around 8 or 9 months old and im starting to experience my coralline algae bleaching in some areas. I was wondering if anyone has had this same problem and what is causing it. I have a 8x24w T5HO fixture thats on 12 hours, remora 1200 skimmer, rena filstar canister filter and a couple hydor powerheads. Could the light be causing this even though i didnt have this problem a few months ago? SHould I shorten the light scheduale and see what happens? thanks
@hugo2x Well its very beautiful.. WHat brand do you know? I think i added my live rock too fast to mine cause it looks like the rock is bleaching out on me
@TrevorScout I was using coralife and some other brand (can't remember which). When I switched my lighting over to metal halide a year ago all my purple rock bleached out, in about 2 months the coraline completely regrew.
@hugo2x , i said a bedroom not a basement . like upstiars on the first floor ... but if its on concrete then im sure weights not an issue ... i was just wondering thats all
@lordvad3r I don't really know about a second floor bedroom, I don't imagine it would be an issue but then again water weighs about 8 lbs a gallon and live rock and sand is much heavier per volume. a system like mine could easily weigh 700lbs.
@lordvad3r Well i have mine above my basement. and it works fine and i have 2 fishtanks. and my aunt and uncle have one on there second floor and its been fine for the like 3 years they have had it
@lordvad3r ok if this helps ,,, salt water weights 10 pounds a gallon ,, so in other words if yopu have a fifty gallon tank it weight a little over 500 pounds ,, now if you take the inches of your stand that touch the floor and divide the tanks weight , you will have pounds persquare inch , to distribute the weight ,, you should be ok most houses built in north america can easily take this
i got a 75 gallon aquarium on the second floor that weighs a crazy amount, and i swear i thought i heard the floor breaking the first day but its been there forever now and its fine man dont worry about it
I've had 75gallons with a 20g sump, rocks and sand on a 3rd floor. They start to get really heavy over 50 gallons, if you make sure that your stand is sitting across the studs in your flooring so that 3 or 4 studs support your aquarium across its depth, instead of just 1 or 2 across the aquariums length, you shouldn't have problems. Remember, Bath tubs will generally hold in excess of 100 Gal, and are very regularly kept in upper levels of homes without issues.
@saltwateraquaruim I have never tried purple tech, but if its a 2 part system it should work just fine. If its not a two part system, than its purely calcium ion with no alkalinity (which is key). if that's the case than you need to dose alkalinity with it.
one tip on reef chems, there is no single liquid dosing solution with both calcium and alkalinity in it, because it is chemically impossible
I plan on getting the Coralife Super Skimmer Needle Wheel Protein Skimmer and then for my subersed sump ill use the 1046, CD-160530 from Ehiem Hobby Pumps. They've got a really good rep. any other suggestions for me?
Correction from my previous comment: argaMIGHT is a powder* form.
My tank isnt nearly as developed as yours but its on its way. Ive suffered some probkems just yesterday where m heater had stopped working completely. It brought it down from 80 degrees to 66. I had to go to the store immediately after noticing and ive got it back to normal temp now.
the rock I do have has lots of algae on it. It's covered. I use: 'argaMIGHT Ocean Calcium' -its an all natural power form. What size tank do you use for your refugium/sump? It looks like a 10 - 15 gal. I couldn't tell. I haven't set miine up yet but think ill probably use a 10 gal.
@SeanoHermano Sorry so long for response, Youtube's new system is funky and doesn't always notify me of new comments. I would suggest using a 20 gallon tank for a sump, not just for more room but because the glass is much thicker. When your moving stuff around down there it could get broken easily.
Very awsome, I should be getting my 120gal tank this week, and I'll diffently try your steps and ideas and let you know the results. Awsome job really.
I buy my saltwater premixed at my local fish store, If memory serves me right I think they use Seachem Salt Mix. I measured a total of 35 gallons of actual water in the tank (50 gal capacity -rocks -sand etc) and I do a 5G water change a week
Bud nice set up, I love your aquascaping!!! As a response to the comment "your sand bed will give you trouble in the future" NO IT WONT!!! It is a deep sand bed (DSB) It is an area for nitrate consuming bacteria and that is helping you kkeep your nitrite and nitrate at 0. Also, live sand is BS, the bacteria will spread quickly and if you get a cup of a bud's sand you will get his bacteria.
no its not. a deep sand bed will only help with natural filtration and help the beneficial bacterias grow. it helps with natural filtration and denitrification
dude ur loving those shrooms lol Really nicre tank man. I think the dosing system u r using is awesome and I'm glad I came across someone who has one. I'm in the process of setting one up. Good clip.
any new videos soon. also i got a 29 gallon and have maybe about 12 fish and my coraline algae grows crazy fast i think its just ur calcium and water flow good. thats my idea just throwing it out there.
That's a really nice tank, but what evidence do you have that the scraping of coralline has any impact at all? With or without the scraping the coralline spores will spread around the tank on their own.
works nicely for dosing a small tank. I do flush it out with a little RO after its done dosing (to keep the valves clean).
I still have to manually fill it to the proper mL every day but now its easy to accurately measure and it drips it in slowly. saves a good deal of time.
