Apart from his palms should be facing the ground, there's nothing wrong with this technique, which, for an American, is a major breakthrough, American's are notoriously dangerous at belaying, that is a known fact throughout the whole of Europe.
There are far easer not to mention safer ways of doing it than this! Don't get yourself or anyone else killed doing it this way. This guy doesn’t know what he is talking about and it would be a shame if he did get you killed.
I'm an experienced climber, who hasn't killed himself, what the hell? To climbergirl, some of the stuff he doesnt' show is because expertvillage cuts up videos for ad rev. How ever those belay techniques are really bad.
I'M A CHALLENGE COURSE DIRECTOR. I'm also dismayed at the belay techniques posted on youtube. It's depressing. There are multiple reasons why this is dangerous...both styles demonstrated are simply outdated. I agree with climbergirl84, the BUS (Brake Underhand Slide) method is the current standard. When 'teaching' people and claiming to be an 'expert' I think there is a responsibility to teach the standard and to demonstrate safe techniques. DON'T TRUST ONLINE BELAY TECHNIQUES. TAKE A CLASS
As a climbing instructor I was appalled to see this "Intro to belaying" posted. This "expert" fails to show such basic skills as how to put on a harness, safety checking yourself as a belayer as well as leaving out anything to do with your climbers basic safety (such as the figure 8-knot). The "technique" he shows is awkward, inefficient, and not the industry standard B.U.S. method taught by NOLS, Outward Bound, and the Climbing Wall Association of America. Please take a course to learn to belay

@crocodilecraig I couldn't agree more! Beginners must seek professional instruction! YouTube is not a substitute!
