Blue throateds retreat over fight. The bird and dog are obviously playing, otherwise the bird would have done more than gently nip at the dog's paw. Birds naturally play fight too...
Besides, the owners know their individual pets' behavior 1000x better than you do.
mmm my friend thought she new her pets too, after 20 plus years of owning every parrot you can think of, (as she ownes a pet shop and hand rears from being 3 weeks old and having dogs around for as long as shes been alive) until one day she went in the shop to get whatever she was getting to come back to find bird feathers and no bird!!!!!! she used to let the bird out and it used to walk on the floor with the dogs and (ahem PLAY) funny how people know there pets well aint it duh
There's a HUGE difference between supervised and unsupervised play. This video was supervised, unfortunately you friend was not supervising and couldn't prevent a fight and unnecessary death.
Dogs and birds is generally unsafe, but these two are playing right. it looks like they know eachother's boundaries, and "stop" signals, you can see the dog doesen't go after the macaw when the parrot has had enough.
The dog is not biting even in play, which is dangerois because of saliva, and the macaw is stopping it's bites.
First time I saw a relativey safe interaction. Go you and your animals!
Well, this looks like play to me. The dog is in classic "play posture"....rear up, front down. The Mac definitely isn't trying to hurt. But, what if the doorbell suddenly rings, or someone drops a pot/pan in the kitchen? Don't know...you're braver than I am. Would love an update video showing these two are still buddies.
Hate to dissapoint you, but a macaw, which is usually gently by nature could take the nose off of a Dobberman if it felt threatened enough. They can break broomsticks in one snap. I know a breeder that had this happen to her Dobberman. Sadly the macaw took part of the eye out as well. Never under-estimate something equevilent to Big Bird with a can opener for a beak!
A Hyacinth or Greenwing might but NOT a BG. So don't get carried away. What kind of broomstick was it, a cracker jack box one? Wtf? But yes, that bird can mess that little dog up..and vice versa.
That's so funny....we have a Shih-tzu that looks just like yours and our Sun Conure "Rufus" does the same exact thing to her!! I think our bird is jealous of her. LOL.
thank you for posting this comment hickrocker. I agree with you. I have a macaw and she is very sensitive to my tone of voice, or actions. I think it's just a matter of time before there's a puncture wound on that dog. A macaw's bite can inflict a LOT of damage. The macaw is just waiting for the right opportunity. The paws move too fast, and he's not wanting to be flung around...at least that's my 2 cents. Just wait though, ... it's all "fun and games" until someone gets hurt. (right?)
No kidding.. I have a blue and gold macaw, and i told my sister not to scream when i was petting my bird. But she just had to scream anyway, luckily it wasn't that bad of a bite, but I did bleed. I agree that there will probably be something bad happening to that dog soon if this continues
it is just nice to see 2 animals of different species playing together...if they were actually fighting there would be more movement and more agression
"If they were actually fighting there would be more movement and more aggression" My question to you is... What are you basing this opinion on? (just curious, as I own a macaw and got the macaw from a previous owner how had small dogs... they do not go together well at all. Yappy dogs stress them out. She doesn't go after the dog, becuz she's a baby, she just screams.)
I'm thinking it's a joust, more so on the dog's behalf, but that macaw is serious - not playing. If he got close enough it'd take a chunk out of that dog. With my current and last parrot I had a 80 old english sheepdog - both were scared to death of my parrots. They are a force to be reckoned with and the dog knows it.
No, it's a play. Macaws especially love to play tag. Notice after he tagged the dog's paw, he walks away. He would have had no problem lunging at the dog and clamping on for a serious bite if he was serious.
All that behavior is so typically Shih-Tzu! He/she is having such a great time. They're the best dogs on earth -- they can play, be gentle, and love you more than most people.
Agreed. The macaw is playing a "macaw game". I call this game "beaky beak". I've been around a few large macaws, and "beaky beak" is a favorite game for them. The point is to grab the opponent's beak (or claw). If you do that, you "score". Notice that at the end the bird touches the dog's foot and then walks away. That's because he (the bird) "won".
Ok, if it was a real fight, the dog could kill that bird easy, and the bird is playing, if it was gunna attack it wouldnt just slowly try to touch it, it would fly at it. This Is Not Fighting, Its PLAYING.
actually the bird would be in more danger than the dog. If you know about parrots, you know that dog saliva is toxic to birds. well adjusted and trained parrots will not bite to injure. this bird is playing..that's how they play. The bird is not playing with the dog! The bird is trying to attack the dog! Look at the birds body language...it says it all. This video is NOT cute or funny to a parrot rescue person. Shame on whoever put this video out there. It should be considered animal abuse!
This is as dangerous as allowing your child to play with a loaded gun. I just autopsied an African Grey whose neck was broken by a playful snap during a game like this. The owner hd toknowif their bird suffered, I told them death was immediate. I have also seen dog's eyes enucleated (torn out of the eye socket by their burd "buddy"), It only takes a heartbeat for a life ending disaster.
W-O-W a Bluethroat. I'm jealous. Beautiful bird you have.
Personally, I would never let them play together, not because I didn't trust the dog or the bird, but an accident could be fatal. But, not my choice and you seem more than competent to decide whats good for YOUR bird =)
amazing how everyones on one side of the fence or the other. i have a macaw so i'll vote that the owner knows what he's doing. i know that i play pretty rough with my bird sometimes and if i hurt her by accident, she'll kick my ass!
i think they are just playing, they have obsiously learned about each other, and each is quick enough to get back if they are truly being threatened by the other.
She's about 2 years old. She's very needy - kind of like a cockatoo - wants to be with me every minute of the day. She's a sweetheart. She loves most men, doesn't care for most women. She tolerates being handled by my wife, but I can do anything with her. She runs up to me and rolls over on her back for me to tickle her tummy. If she nips, it's just hard enough to let you know she want's something. She's never broken the skin.
It's funny seeing them on the couch. The blue-throat will charge the shih-tzu like she's going to bite, and then will stop and gently barely touch the edge of the shih-tzu's coat. This is pretty common behavior with a blue throat and even blue and gold macaws. They threaten to bite, but don't want to and would rather flee than fight. It's also seen in playing behavior and you have to know the particular bird to tell the difference.
This isn't playing. The bird is trying to bite the dog. The dog thinks it's playing which isn't great either b/c it'll get bitten one of these when it isn't fast enough.
WOW, that is dangerous for your parrot! Is he still alive? P-L-E-A-S-E, don't let them conyinue with this form of "play". It could turn deadly....quickly....sadly.....
thats not playing, Work with birds as a job, and that behavior is, judging from where the macaw is positioning himself, keeping the dog away from you, watch how he circles

This is the same shih-tzu that saved a baby mockingbird. Another of my videos. She's a sweetheart. She knows what the bird is supposed to do and not to do, and she acts like the bird police.
Hey how horrible are macaw bites? Worse than from a cockatoo? Ive been wanting to get a macaw forever, but im just too afraid of loosing a finger or having to get stitches. Everything else, like experience with parrots - I have...
She's never bitten hard enough to break the skin. She knows how hard to bite to hurt a little. I've never heard of a macaw taking a finger off - if the try to hurt you they would pinch you with the sharp end of the beak - which would make a puncture wound.
if the bird bites the dog, the dog will have an injury, but if the dog gets a hold of the bird in his mouth then its certain death for the bird...

They're precious! I hope that you supervise them carefully though, it'd be a shame to lose such a rare macaw to an accident. :)
