When do i shift up? Down? What gear do I go down to when i come to a stop on a red light, 1 or 2? I am a new driver, never drove a manual. Any help is appreciated, I'm very surprised at the lack of info there is on the web on these. I have an acura 06' and it has an option to switch to tiptronic, but i dont know how to use it. thanks!
I hate how this guy says "shifting" through the gears, as if he's not actually shifting. Steptronic/Tiptronic/Manumatic/Whatever you want to call it, is manual, without the annoying, painful clutch. You are choosing when to shift, so you are manually operating the gear that the car goes into. It's just more comfortable.
@Ksharp1fan its better because 1: you dont have to look down to what gear your in, 2:in the typical "H" pattern, new people can mess up and grinding gears is a higher posibility, 3: more convienent, 4: no trans or engine blowning if shifted in the wrong gear
If you have to look down to see what gear you're in you shouldn't be racing in a manual. Drive a manual long enough and you'll always be able to shift by feel and will never select the wrong gear.
Also, manual shifting without a clutch is pointless on a circuit. The clutch is good because you can initiate wheel spin or pivot the car with driveline shock by purposely mismatching revs mid-corner. You cannot do this to the same effect in a sequential manual.
@mrdeathbat92 in my opinion what i use it for is if im to tired at night or driving long hours and what an automatic car i use it and if im at a red light and want to gain speed i use the manual feature idk thats what i use it for
Wait, if you shift from 1st gear to 4th gear, will it go there incrementally or at once like a manual? I heard that it would go from 1st to 2nd to 3rd then 4th in tiptronic
@alex50th yup. we have a pacifica that has "auto-stick" which basically is the same thing. it has PRND and then one more click down, you can move it left and right and shift through the gears. its acctually pretty fun.
anybody that says tiptrontic is better than stick isnt really a car person(if u work on your own car and driven more than 1 car you can talk) standard transmisson leaves you with all the control at your hands and feet and thats what it started with and thats what it should be.
manual is old tried and true technology but new tiptronics are better, Faster and perfect shifts. Then again if you really want to feel cool and feel like a super driver then by all means get a 6 speed ZR1. the advantages of tiptronic on a daily driver car is better experienced in a city. Ten again i know some people who get bored when they dont need to step on a third pedal
I drove stick once, never driven automatic. maybe that's cos I don't have a driver's license yet?
listen man, all this 'involvement' bullshit is stupid. F1 drivers have flappy paddles. why? because they yield RESULTS.
and if you can set it & forget it in automatic when you're driving around town, better still, one less thing to do with your hand. that would give you room for all the shit you do with yours.
@sirtristan01 I don't disagree with you in the fact that F1 transmissions are pretty badass, but don't they cost more than say two grand? (yes) Aren't they developed by the best engineers in the automotive world? (yes) AND If you drove a car one time, how can you have any type of valid opinion? When you grow up and you have a practical car getting 40 MPG, good luck enjoying driving it with an automatic.
@xXMUDSLINGERXx AND I QUOTE "DON'T THEY COST MORE THAN 2 GRAND" (like a normal trans costs for a normal car). The words 'more than' implies any number larger than $2000.00. Thank you for being such a poor reader.
@neverhadachance6 don't they cost more than 2 grand in a modern american english translation implies very near 2 grand but a few hundred over or something along those lines. Usually, you try to keep the limiting minimum closer to the actual value than over 88 thousand off. Thank you for improperly using the English language.
@sirtristan01 opinions are like assholes, everyones got one, and while i agree its nice around town you comparing f1 racing high output v8 engines with dual clutch literal no delay gear boxes to what you see on your typical honda fit/ what you see in this video doesnt work. i love auto but theres nothing like a crisp 5 or 6 speed my friend.
@hamronD73 on sports cars flappy paddles rule and nobody can deny that. Ferrari and Porsche both offer them with double-clutch, the action is just far quicker than any driver's foot and hand.
and while some like the involvement, Car & Driver posted a 2.9sec 0-60 time with a 911 Turbo S PDK (530 horsepower). Nobody can go below 3.3-3.6sec on a GT2 RS (600+ horses, 6speed manual) - though it's lighter.
thus, despite involvement, DSGs are faster. this tiptronic is slower than manual of course
I've been trying to decide between the 6 speed and the tiptronic... i still cant tell how quickly the tiptronic changes gear based on your video.. is it a quick change?
do you have to let go the gas while shifting in tiptronic mode? please answer!

@FallIntoWinterr On most cars there is a number on the instrument cluster to tell you which gear.

@Ksharp1fan Well then you get manual for you. I have a manual and know how to use it when i need to. But I rather have the faster, easier tiptronic

early tiptronics were worse than manual but look at the PDK now.
yields better results, manual is fail.
