I don't think he is trying to say that he literally CREATED dubstep. What he is saying is that the music korn made had unintentional similarities with what became the dubstep genre. It is an explanation of why it is plausible to mix their music with dubstep, not a conspiracy theory that he was the true inventor of the genre. I think you know this, but you thought taking it literally would get you more views and a more eye-catching title. In that way you succeeded, so well done I guess...
They didn't invent dubstep but no one can say they didn't have similarities with the dubstep genre. Of course, this guy doesn't have a good argument for how they weren't similar, instead just saying fan boys should have an "anvil dropped on their head." Seriously?
Korn is trying to hold on to what ever they can like dubstep because they have nothing left to do as a band.. I'm a fan of there older work but not so much the new crap...
What JD means is that Korn had elements and still do in their music that are similar to elements incorporated into dubstep. They have similar timings, drum patterns and they have always produced bass heavy music with some songs including instrumental 'drops' of bass heavy riffs.
This justifies the collaboration of KoRn with dubstep producers to produce their recent experimental album, Path Of Totality.
He didn't mean they invented dubstep. He just meant that their music shares similar elements.

you are blowing this out of proportion. you have no point. dubstep sucks. korn's new album is much better without all the stupid dubstep crap in there.
There was 2-step in 1992, but in 1998 dub step was made and is considered to have more beats per minute then 2-step. Jon only stated that they invented dub step cause there getting old, and the older they get the shitter there albums get. Old skool korn is better then this new shit they bring out.
On that note I guess Elvis didn't begin rock and roll which led to metal either. It might be a leap to say Elvis invented metal but it's the same leap between korn and dubstep. It's not hard to see a connection. For string instruments I'd say yeah it could be a precursor to dubstep. They didn't singlehandedly make it though.
Makes me laugh all these people trying to lay claim to the very British invention that is 'Dubstep'. Timbaland even tries saying he invented it, despite it being faster, having totally different basslines and you not being able to dance to it (therefore being something else entirely). Sorry, but it was invented by grass roots UK garage DJ's and that is how history will remember it. It's like saying Techno wasn't invented in Detroit... it's just bollocks.
I like Korn and to be fair loving the new album. But man did they not invent Dubstep, (I was shocked to find out it had been around since '98 so thanks for the info). Not only did they not invent Dubstep, they didn't even invent Metalstep/Drumstep/Dubmetal whatever you want to call the blend of Metal & Dubstep, I'd been hunting that stuff down on youtube before Korn even knew they were gona blend Dubstep :-P
god damn i just want to punch you in your whiny little fucking mouth you balding asshole, stop talking at the camera about your shitty views and speak into it. no one likes bitchy sounding people...........like yourself.
this guys is pretty retarted.... i can understand the ref of korn saying they "invented" dubstep with they way they tone down there guitars and what have you
I've listened and embraced KoRn for ten years now and have never judged them even though their sound has changed, i favor Jonathan Davis as a musician not as the Band KoRn because KoRn was not afraid to step outside the box and take their talent further. You all are not true fans nor know shit about music, so i'm so so sorry for your uneducated minds.
what you all idiots fail to comprehend is that Jonathan Davis is saying that the BASIS of DUBSTEP was started by them. You all call yourselves music fans but don't Know SHIT. the electronic sounds, the rpms, the low base lines. Granted DUBSTEP is more than that AND has a DANCE type of sound to it BUT the basics of it are the RPMS, BASE LINES, ELECTRONIC SOUNDS (In KoRn's case electonic modification of Guitar RIffs).

Metal is Dead to me now, for Dubstep has saved my soul. Fuck you Jon D-bag, may you please die and have KoRn Find a better font man who doesnt say dumb stuff with no merit. Seriously this title pissed me off enough to eat my cat whole....
@rockitoutblog A lot of producers we worked with said to us that we were dubstep before there was dubstep. Because of the fact that we tune down very low, because of the fact that we've always been about the bass. The roots of the band have basically been dubstep and we didn't even know it.
So, I think it's been this way for a long time. It's not really guitar and drums oriented, there are electronic elements but people will eventually catch on it, they will feel it. Jonathan Davis.
I AGREE.... NO ONE HAD WHAT Feildy HAD WITH HIS BASS, THEN DAVES DRUMMS.. go back and listen to "FOLLOW THE LEADER", but the first dubstep WAS METAL AND DRUM and BASS Beats
Listen to the song it's on and you'll know what he is talking about.... Asi q si hablas español con esa te la dejo...........Korn It's On listeng to it
He dosent mean it like that you idiot, obviously hes referring to the bass sounds because if you been to Korn shows you can clearly hear the bass, korns all about the bass, ADGCF tuning! low bass just like dubstep! and they hav that same drum beat but more unique, get your facts straight!!
On behalf of Korn fans everywhere: I'm sorry. Don't know wtf Jon Davis was thinking, but it doesn't reflect what the actual fans think about Korn or dubstep.
man you misunderstood him extremely hard.. he was probably trying to say when you listen close to their old shit.. you will hear the fast bass slaps on the drumsound (there wasn't really riffing in the bass just hitting bass on drum beats with higher and lower tones--> really creative in my opinion) he's just saying the bass of old school korn and the bass of dubstep kinda have the same concept. he's a deep person, don't take his words zo superficial.
I know nothing about this which makes me perfect to comment: maybe that Korn feller was joking. I don't know, but seriously, he could have been joking.
@fusionfaller09 Korn may have a say in this that they 'made' dubstep but they didn' pioneer it because it didn't fit the requirements of that scene. Their old material has some elements of dubstep but it wasn't really elaborative. Benga and co pioneered dubstep because it fitted those requirements in that scene.
1) I'm astounded that Pikachu isn't a top comment. Can this happen? Please?
2) It is a little known fact that Johanthan Lipnicki is also the mastermind behind Rock Funk and the Black Keys.
3) No, Bowie does not need a musical. Not one bit.
QotD: No. I'm also pretty sure Korn didn't even pioneer nu metal (which was pretty much invented by Ross Robinson in a studio somewhere, anyway). Also...how embarassing that someone would want to admit to starting dubstep O_o;
@DvineINFEKT um yeah they did invent nu metal. your stupid. you search anywhere it will say so. as i said before. i removed my comment cause i was wrong and when i corrected i was still bitched at, i misunderstood. geez
@spazattack9884 Ross Robinson was the one who came up with the idea of marketable nu metal, and MTV ran it after they realized they could capitalize on angsty teenagers in suburbia. Korn, Bizkit, Slipknot, (early) Machine Head, Deftones, etc - almost every huge nu-metal act has had at LEAST one album produced by Ross Robinson...who...HEY! LOOK! Worked on the debut Korn album!
Get your facts straight before you call me stupid, dude.
Korn invented nu metal no more than they invented dubstep.
I think they really just want to try something new. It's a coincidence that they're adapting to such a popular style of music. Nu-metal is popular in itself.
So I guess they're trying to appeal to another audience.
I guess they have sold out to some degree. I can't believe the whole "Korn invented dubstep" thing. He implies he's reinvented the genre to a degree. And he has.
Al gore invited the Internet and koRn invited dubstep. Why can't everyone just understand that just look at the facts. Also the attack on the twin towers and the attack on pearl harbor was done by the USA
this is too funny dubsteps been moving up for time over here !!!! and as the other comments state it is influenced from the garage D'n'B and grime scene. Its was also originally called sub-low and then became dubstep. Sorry but dont try and gasssss that you invented it you didnt !!!!! so show some respect to the pioneers
There are no Korn songs that are influenced by garage house music or reggae which have been the roots of dubstep. Ask any original dubstep dj. Awesome line about Lipnicki.
Also look at UK garage and 2step back in the 90s, zed bias, oris jay and Rob Smith Dub, im sorry but all these idiots claiming to have invented dubstep make themselves sound like amatures it has been on the rise for years, and since it hit mainstream in 2006 it has managed to infiltrate through every mainstream genre from Justin Beiber to Korn, timberland also claims to have invented it - its a movemnent but if the musical sheep carry on jumping on dubstep bandwagon its going to kill everything
Errm hello.... all this dubstep claim.... maybe people should look at the roots of dubstep - Dub and Reggae, King Tubby was a dub and musical pioneer inventing the spring reverb present in much of the music we hear today way back in the early 60s 70s, 80s!, living in Bristol UK at the moment and I was aware that the Bristol sound was mainly responsible for the dubstep movement ??
I don't think KoRn invented dubstep, I give that to the actual artists who INVENTED the (sub-)genre. But I think that early nu-metal acts such as KoRn has influenced it a bunch with it's heavy style and low bpm count. KoRn as an act, far from the mainstream nu-metal genre, has always experimented with electronic components, but(!) I think that credit should go to the actual dubstep producers, even though KoRn is awesome for trying something new and daring. And as always, getting good ads like yo
Got The Life had electronic music elements but that does not mean that they invented dubstep because as he says they were developing new metal following the formula they created in life is peachy and korn. They only gave it a comercial approach so they could be succesful to they eyes of the MTV Network and it's viewers.
No, Davies has got it wrong - and he probably knows it too.....it makes for a debate etc though....
...I've always seen DubStep as a follow on from ye ol' Drum&Bass scene myself.....
....I think its funny how many folk get hung up about genres....when it comes to metal I would say Led Zep started it followed by Black Sabbath and Deep Purple and I think I heard that Rob Helford from Judus Priest was the one who said and put the word 'heavy' into metal - so there....nah nah na nah na!
I loved watching your videos whenever I had a chance. But now since I saw that you are a wearing a Third Man Records shirt, I am definitely going to tune in very often! Stay awesome!
Taken completely out of context btw. He was saying that it makes sense that their new album is like it is, meaning they had dubstep elements in their music before their new album
Jonathan's a fuck-tard lol love what they were going for with that album, but that statement is completely ridiculous, dubstep is good, Korn is good, but if you agree with that statement you deserve to be shot in the face
i think jonathan is overcrediting korn for inventing dubstep. they had some qualities of dubstep, but by no means invented it. the guys who started dubstep probly were influenced by korn and nu metal along with many other genres. some qualities they liked of korn and many other genres was imprinted in their minds so when they started making dubstep we know today they incorporated the qualities they enjoyed. i think the analogy goes more like "if korn invented dubstep, then wagner invented metal"
@shlongy14 look at the roots of dubstep - DUB! F all to do with metal, started in london with fusion of 2-step garage and DUB other elements added later!
PIKACHU <3 thats the only thing i got from this, btw thats johnathans opinon, his opinon is 99.9 % wrong in this case - freedom of speech and people make mistakes stop freaking out anyone slightly more famous or loved than you says something in an interview it doesnt change korn it doesnt change dubstep both are awesome
No they did not invent dubstep! They pioneered nu-metal! Yes there sound was really something else back in the day, and it really cought us by suprise but it sunded nothing like dubstep.
i love korn but they didn't picacho did haven sex with a amp

I know nothing about this which makes me perfect to comment: maybe that Korn feller was joking. I don't know, but seriously, he could have been joking.

@electricphil90 Actualy. It was skream benga and rusko dumbass.
fusionfaller09 1 month ago
@fusionfaller09 Korn may have a say in this that they 'made' dubstep but they didn' pioneer it because it didn't fit the requirements of that scene. Their old material has some elements of dubstep but it wasn't really elaborative. Benga and co pioneered dubstep because it fitted those requirements in that scene.
Thegreengiantful 1 month ago
Going by his quote, he never said they invented it. He was just saying they had dubstep-esque qualities before people regarded it as a genre.

So much good in this video.
1) I'm astounded that Pikachu isn't a top comment. Can this happen? Please?
2) It is a little known fact that Johanthan Lipnicki is also the mastermind behind Rock Funk and the Black Keys.
3) No, Bowie does not need a musical. Not one bit.
QotD: No. I'm also pretty sure Korn didn't even pioneer nu metal (which was pretty much invented by Ross Robinson in a studio somewhere, anyway). Also...how embarassing that someone would want to admit to starting dubstep O_o;
DvineINFEKT 2 months ago
@DvineINFEKT Ross Robinson did that.... Producing Korn.
OscarHracsO 2 months ago
@OscarHracsO Hence the....comment? O_o;
ie: Nu Metal is a studio thing, not a movement. If you ever get the chance, watch "The Merchants of Cool" - life altering perceptions.
DvineINFEKT 2 months ago
@DvineINFEKT um yeah they did invent nu metal. your stupid. you search anywhere it will say so. as i said before. i removed my comment cause i was wrong and when i corrected i was still bitched at, i misunderstood. geez
spazattack9884 2 months ago
@spazattack9884 Ross Robinson was the one who came up with the idea of marketable nu metal, and MTV ran it after they realized they could capitalize on angsty teenagers in suburbia. Korn, Bizkit, Slipknot, (early) Machine Head, Deftones, etc - almost every huge nu-metal act has had at LEAST one album produced by Ross Robinson...who...HEY! LOOK! Worked on the debut Korn album!
Get your facts straight before you call me stupid, dude.
Korn invented nu metal no more than they invented dubstep.

JD might have a point. Maybe not that extreme, but that might be why dub mixes so well with his music
Joker2899 2 months ago

Also look at UK garage and 2step back in the 90s, zed bias, oris jay and Rob Smith Dub, im sorry but all these idiots claiming to have invented dubstep make themselves sound like amatures it has been on the rise for years, and since it hit mainstream in 2006 it has managed to infiltrate through every mainstream genre from Justin Beiber to Korn, timberland also claims to have invented it - its a movemnent but if the musical sheep carry on jumping on dubstep bandwagon its going to kill everything
pandorawarrior1 2 months ago

Cheers :)

Stupidest thing i've heard all day.
Dubstep was pioneered in London, England with elements from the shop "Big Apple Records"
Dubstep(and UK Grime) evolved out of UK Garage / 2-step.

i think jonathan is overcrediting korn for inventing dubstep. they had some qualities of dubstep, but by no means invented it. the guys who started dubstep probly were influenced by korn and nu metal along with many other genres. some qualities they liked of korn and many other genres was imprinted in their minds so when they started making dubstep we know today they incorporated the qualities they enjoyed. i think the analogy goes more like "if korn invented dubstep, then wagner invented metal"
