Excellent instructive material. if you dont mind could you please specify how to draw hair in this context. blender 2.45 does not allow vertex group selection for multires level 6. therefore particle emission[hair] from the scalp area cannot be accomplished by selecting the appropriate vertices in edit mode.

Setting levels is a good option because you can easily move back and forth from fewer levels to more levels. Changes made at lower levels will be reflected when you increase the levels again.
