@41jsparks - If the games are made around the same time as the computer... In this case around 2003, then sure.. A game from 2011 is unlikely to work well or at all.

@aNESgamer - I think you can actually run MS Office 2008 (it is going to be slow) and the most modern version of Open Office would probably work (also very slow) But if you want to take notes, just use the built in text-edit program.

Hey FYI, SOME G3's can take up to 1GB of RAM. On my iMac G3 Blue Dalmation, 512MB is the OFFICIAL limit, however I have tested it to run at 1GB safely and smoothly.

@MrNugNugNuggy I am aware of that. I was simply suggesting that sometimes the "official" RAM limitations are not entirely true. For example, my iMac officially can only accept up to 512MB, but it is quite stable at 1GB.
Know this is an older video.. but was wondering. What speed CPU are you using for this video? I have a 500mhz G3 with 384mb ram installed.. Even after downloading a video from youtube (using mactubes) I am unable to watch it. Skips just like it does on youtube.

@taeskyhigh - sounds like the .DMG image is corrupt, perhaps the download didn't finish or you are using an obsolete operating system? (earlier than 10.3?)

Wow, I love seeing the older macs still perform top notch. I have an iMac g4 700mhz and it still runs very well, I use it as my desktop. Good video, I really miss my G3. One thing that didn't make sense - you said you don't know anyone who uses spotlight... I don't know anyone who doesn't, and it's by far the quickest way to launch apps and find files, but I can imagine it is slow on a G3.

I really wish my iBook G3 lasted a bit longer. It was a solid machine, and perfect for all the writing that I have to do. But I've since upgraded to a Macbook and an HP Mini running OSX. So I think I'm in the clear. Still... that keyboard was a joy to write on. :) Great video.

@A135S4656 - Last I tried Ubuntu, it wouldn't work on the G3 models. It worked okay on the G4 models but has variety of irritating bugs and lack of software support.
@adric22 I have Ubuntu running just fine on my clamshell. There's a specific version thats ancient as hell that you need if you want to run it on a G3 iBook.
@yourweedsux - Yes, the 800 and 900 Mhz G3's can barely run youtube in 240p (which most users don't understand how to turn on) It also helps to be running the new Adobe Flash 10.1

You can let videos load all the way and attempt to stream them, but there is a better method. Disabling Spotlight and Dashboard help with resource allocation for smoother performance in general, but there are also URL tweaks you can do to watch videos at a stable frame rate, on the old iBook G3 series. You can check the tutorial on my channel, on how to do so.
Unfortunately, I do not. My experience is limited to the iBook, MacBook and the old G5 Mac towers. I have had little exposure to the Powerbook. Though, there are plenty of useful tutorials from others, here on Youtube.
Yes it is. You can click on the Apple logo in the toolbar and select "Software Update" or you can download the manual installer from Apple's web page.
right click or press ctrl+mouse button, on any open space on your dock. You will see a context menu that reads, "Turn Hiding On," among other options. Simply select that option and your dock will minimize once you move your mouse away from the bottom of the screen. To have your dock reappear, simply scroll your mouse pointer to the bottom of the screen and your dock will pop up. I find it helps with the screen real estate if you aren't running Leopard (which has Spaces).

Actually, I have a tutorial on my page. I am not trying to whore my videos out for views, but it will legitimately help you. As for Facebook, there is no real cure all there. You can install a Flash blocker in Safari and use Facebook for its general purpose (social networking) but you will encounter problems and browser crashes if you try to run Facebook apps and quizzes. Adobe has yet to optimize Flash for older Macs (let alone modern ones). Good luck.

@BluCosmos Absolutely. Same thing with my G3. 128mb of on board + 128mb chip = 256mb. With 256, nothing worked. Tiger is using that 256 because it needs that much at min to run. But, when I installed a 512mb chip to max it out with 640mb, youtube is a lot faster, and things load very fast. I have seen a difference with Camino. Flash is better ran, and apps on like Facebook load and can be played.

Hi great video!! I need to know how to solve my problem tho. I also have a iBook G3 which ive recently dug out and wanted to get to work again. At the moment it half runs ubuntu 8 and is impossible to use because theres a nuetilus error. I have a Mac Tiger DVD and i have an external usb dvd drive. When I hold option on startup the external drive does not come up. Is there another way to install Tiger? Or will I have to install the new ubuntu? Thanks
The latest ubuntu's don't seem to work on G3 systems at all. (haven't tried G4 yet, maybe it will work) Anyway, I am guessing your G3 has a broken optical drive? Or is it just a CD-ROM and not a DVD? If it is just because it is a CDROM, you can get on your favorite bit-torrent site and download a 4-disc CD set to install from (which should be legal since you own the DVD anyway)
just (legally) downloaded the 4 cd version of Tiger. I installed CD 1 perfectly. It got to CD 2 and the drive grunts and spins and then ejects the disc back out. I'm pretty sure the CD isnt damaged as I burned it and verified it with disk utility. I may look to install a slot loading drive. Thanks anyway

I consider 384 like a bare minimum for running Tiger.. Add a 512 and you'll have 640 MB and it should run a lot better. However, if you disable dashboard and have a clean install of OS-X, typically you can make 384 MB work for you for basic needs.
Actually that G4 iMac is what I used to make this video. I normally use an Intel iMac but it is in the shop (its under warranty, I'll let them fix it!) , so I am currently using one of the several G4 imacs I have around.. yes, I sell those too, but only on craigslist (too much of a pain to pack and ship!)

To have your dock reappear, simply scroll your mouse pointer to the bottom of the screen and your dock will pop up. I find it helps with the screen real estate if you aren't running Leopard (which has Spaces).

@PsWiieR The old clamshell blue and white (and other colours) were still considered G3 iBooks but so are these - they both use G3 PowerPC processors.

Actually, I have a tutorial on my page. I am not trying to whore my videos out for views, but it will legitimately help you. As for Facebook, there is no real cure all there. You can install a Flash blocker in Safari and use Facebook for its general purpose (social networking) but you will encounter problems and browser crashes if you try to run Facebook apps and quizzes. Adobe has yet to optimize Flash for older Macs (let alone modern ones). Good luck.

Great info. I got an ibook g3 off ebay, and just ordered 512mb of memory for it. Youtube barely ran with 256mb, so now with extra memory and camino, maybe it will run a little faster. Thanks.

I have a tutorial on my page that offers instruction on how to get Youtube videos to play faster on an iBook G3. However, note that I have 640MB of RAM on my iBook G3. So my tutorial applies to that configuration. Good luck sir.

@BluCosmos Absolutely. Same thing with my G3. 128mb of on board + 128mb chip = 256mb. With 256, nothing worked. Tiger is using that 256 because it needs that much at min to run. But, when I installed a 512mb chip to max it out with 640mb, youtube is a lot faster, and things load very fast. I have seen a difference with Camino. Flash is better ran, and apps on like Facebook load and can be played.

Hi great video!! I need to know how to solve my problem tho. I also have a iBook G3 which ive recently dug out and wanted to get to work again. At the moment it half runs ubuntu 8 and is impossible to use because theres a nuetilus error. I have a Mac Tiger DVD and i have an external usb dvd drive. When I hold option on startup the external drive does not come up. Is there another way to install Tiger? Or will I have to install the new ubuntu? Thanks

The latest ubuntu's don't seem to work on G3 systems at all. (haven't tried G4 yet, maybe it will work) Anyway, I am guessing your G3 has a broken optical drive? Or is it just a CD-ROM and not a DVD? If it is just because it is a CDROM, you can get on your favorite bit-torrent site and download a 4-disc CD set to install from (which should be legal since you own the DVD anyway)

just (legally) downloaded the 4 cd version of Tiger. I installed CD 1 perfectly. It got to CD 2 and the drive grunts and spins and then ejects the disc back out. I'm pretty sure the CD isnt damaged as I burned it and verified it with disk utility. I may look to install a slot loading drive. Thanks anyway

I dug out my old G3 and tossed Tiger on it, but it seems Tiger is lagging pretty bad.
Is it because I have a 600MHz CPU?

Hrmm, you think? I have a 256 and it adds the 128 so I really have like 384mb. So I needa toss a 512 in there? I've been coming across a LOT of G3s and G4s. :)

I consider 384 like a bare minimum for running Tiger.. Add a 512 and you'll have 640 MB and it should run a lot better. However, if you disable dashboard and have a clean install of OS-X, typically you can make 384 MB work for you for basic needs.

Actually that G4 iMac is what I used to make this video. I normally use an Intel iMac but it is in the shop (its under warranty, I'll let them fix it!) , so I am currently using one of the several G4 imacs I have around.. yes, I sell those too, but only on craigslist (too much of a pain to pack and ship!)
