People believed it and paid for it they were tricked into thinking that things would get better.

We all admire Cambodia before the war but we also forget that our country blossomed under Sihanouk's leadership. To Westerner he was an autocrat that stood in the way of establishing democracy and had to be removed. The peasants who had lived under this monarchy for hundreds of years were then tricked by the Khmer Rouge to support their insurgency in order to supposedly restore the monarchy. In short we were all pawns of an outside agenda.

I agree. The Vietnam War have caused a massive exodus of Viets into Cambodia. This was prior to the Khmer Rouge invasion. When this happened, LON NOL took advantage of this to create nationalism so he can become in power. Later he would stage a coup d'etat on Sihinouk while he was out negotiating with China and the Soviet not to have war in Cambodia. Sihinouk wanted to save Cambodia from war, LON NOL was the one who should be blamed.

Lon Nol wanted power. Sihinouk thought he did the right thing when he worked with the Khmer Rouge. In fact, Lon Nol escaped to the US and changed his name. He took a suit case full of money with him given by the CIA.
