SA worked harder than any of their peers. Pirner was classic Minneapolis cool & to hell with Pearl Jam & Nirvana being innovators. They all wanted to look, rock, & feel like Dave Pirner & his mates. When everything smelled like teen spirit Dave was still putting up flyers by himself. My guitarist would comp him smokes at the Holiday station whenever he'd come in because he was poor. I have only the deepest resect for this great band. Seeing SA at the U of M in 1988 changed my life.

@Theodoric1 I can't agree that Soul Asylum worked harder than Husker Du (do I really have to go into how they recorded 8 studio albums + MiniLP (plus various B sides to singles) in 4 years and toured almost non-stop from 81-87?), Husker Du just burned out and broke up 5 years before what they were doing was ready for the masses to consume. I'll say Soul Asylum are still one of the best bands I ever saw live though!

Back then there was good music, although there was too much focus on Seattle, and there was alot of groups hopping on the rock bandwagon that didn't deserve airplay as much as Minneapolis area groups did. Thanks to the internet, the 'industry' isn't in 'control' any more!

they jumped the shark with "runaway train" and lost all indie cred. they were never as great as their minneapolis peers to begin with. some good stuff, but in retrospect, they achieved much more fame than they were probably ever should have.

Sometimes when a band becomes mainstream, they compromise their values in order to keep the success, but in my personal opinion, SA was not one of those bands. "Let your dim light...." is an awesome album! I like it even more than "Grave dancers union".

What if David dated Winona Ryder? I don't see why it should be something relevant. I mean, is about music.

i agree with you thats what i was trying to say why i hate "indie scenes" and "hipsters" is cause theirs all these rules and when their broken some bands get away with it and some dont...i love soul asylum i have for like 18 years okay i have had to debate and defend them on numerous occassions...thats what i was trying to say is that i hate indie cred and success=you suck cause its not true ...everybody compromises their beliefs sometime nobody is or ever will be that "cool" :)
