My '97 TC hit a Brand new Fiat 500 at 70 mph head on (the driver of the Fiat 500 was from the UK and drunk and was driving on the wrong side of the road):
There were only a few scratches on the bumper of the town car. The Fiat 500 collapsed so fast that it created a singularity and caused a wormhole to open, which took me back and time to before the accident, and this time I swerved from the Fiat. So the accident never occurred or did it?
@freshjive855 Yes generic, though it will last 4x longer than your typical Honda Civic without having to sit in the garage once or twice for extended periods of time.
Ford's made the biggest mistake when they decided to kill the Panther Platform. Police & Taxi companies chose the Crown Victoria/Lincoln Town Car/Mercury Grand Marquis for their rugged body-on-frame construction and rear-wheel-drive along with huge interiors and trunks. The newer cars that are proposed to take their place have none of these. RIP True American Automobiles!
@certosify Actually the Lincoln Town Car, Crown Victoria, and Grand Marquis have consistently ranked poor in side impact tests for their entire existence. They are relatively safe in front impacts but if the impact is anywhere else you are sure to either die or wish you died because your injuries are so extensive.
my dad used to work taxi with our 99' grand marquis limited edition, it crashed about 2-3 times, and we just fixed the body, and it still goes strong and smoth, plus it still smells new, these cars are the probably the best cars they made
Lincoln Town Car is a car with CLASS!!!!!! You want a car with class, but don't have eighty thousand bucks, get a Town Car. Pretty much the workhorse Crown Victoria dressed in a tux, and with air suspension.
i Think Ford should Bring an All New Towncar into Production....the Luxury in these cars is already phenomenal....a slightly redesigned outside, inside and powertrain with a few more accesories with a Unibody structure and i think the towncar name could be restored to its former glory.....IMO it already beats the hell out of any Mercedes,BMW,or Volkswagen, some might think thats Complete BS but these cars are indeed Bulletproof, and dont drain your wallet on maintenence either.
@form109 - I agree, if Ford was just that little extra bit smarter, they'd look at the success Chrysler has had with the first 300c and the refreshed model from Fiat. Even then, the 300 is smaller and less reliable than the Panther-platform cars by Ford. I think its something they will regret when come August of this year, they end production of the Town Car, Grand Marquis, and Crown Victoria.
a more realistic test would be if they made the town car hit something like a honda civic and see who comes out safer and unharmed, the problem is that in real life the other object is more likely to be pushed out of the way and not stay in place thus less or more damage to each vehicle
@TheSovietUnionCCCP how many major tune ups did you do cause i got a 98 with 150k and i was thinking about getting a tune up cause the car drives likes shes new but just accelerates a lil slower when i smash off other than that no problems
@TheSovietUnionCCCP wowsers mine only has 352,XXX. Sad they're taking them away D: but I bet some other car manufacturer will seize this opportunity and make a Town Car, it'll just be a different car company like Cadillac or someone, but regardless, I plan to keep mine for another 1,000,000 miles or so.
extremely reliable car these run perfect at 300,000 plus miles. I can't believe some of these newer american sedans that die out at barely over 100k. Come on people keep making these. The MPG rating is decent but they can make it better. It's sad that they are killing the last real good american sedan. after o7 they started making them in Canada but still it's the last rear wheel drive body on frame sedan. The MKS is nothing compared to this
these car crumple way to bad for the size of car they are i have seen some smaller cars survive with less damage then these crown vics do so don't get smart when driving a bigger car you don't always win in an accident remember all bumpers on cars are cheap crappy plastic that you could snap off with your foot
@adrianplaut they crumple where they should and stay in tact where they should. this way the force of the crash is pushed away from the drive and into the road or other places. this is a very safe car!
@adrianplaut look at what's behind the bumper of the panther platform vehicles, a big steel crossmember that actually works well in low speed impacts. i was riding with a friend in his Acura RSX and he rear-ended a Cadillac CTS at 5MPH and the "reinforcement bar" that is behind his bumper bent back and kinked, rendering it useless and cracking the bumper in two places. i slid into a cement-filled steel pole at a gas station last winter in my Grand Marquis and the result was paint on my bumper
A Crown Vic crashed in front of my house today, ruined my Cousin's Cadillac, my neighbors' Mercedes, and my damaged my other neighbors' Jaguar. Then, the Crown Vic set on fire. The Mercedes was all the way in my lawn and the Caddy was half way on it.
its all about the g-force when you hit, the front end is designed to crumple, pretty much likea big pillow,, its got a big front end, meaning softer hit, as long as the cabin is not effected its superb,
@certosify Worse MPG than the Town car? HA you've gotta be kiddin me. The Diesel Espace gets 43 MPG, i'd like to see a town car get that. Impossible to drive? Well that just shows how competent you are behind the steering wheel, becausei can drive one just fine. It has all independent car suspention so it drives just fine. All plastic? What would you call the interior of a town car then? It certainly isn't alcantara or leather.
@certosify But, if a car is very big, it has more weight moving forward which puts more force on the passenger compartment in a frontal collision.
For example, the BMW 3 series is smaller and lighter than the 5 series, and it's passenger cell holds its shape a little better than the larger 5 series in a crash.
Plus it's all about the strength and rigidity of the passenger cell, which big old
American cars (and old cars in general) had none of.
I have an '03 Town Car with 147K on it, runs like a top, not a mark on it. Everything works. Big, heavy, V-8, body-on-frame, RWD, old (proven) school. Rides like my living room, none better for, especially, a long trip. Coffin quiet. Cheap to buy. Downside? Nothing. Oh, and 25.5 mpg on the highway
@rexxcarz Lincoln better have something similar when they discontinue these in the next years. It just doesn't seem like a lincoln if its not a v8, huge, and rwd.
@NitroGadvRules So true. This car is now the last real American luxury car left since ford killed off the Mercury Grand Marquis and Crown Vic. We have to save this pice of our history.
4 years ago Ford disolved the L-M Div and began consolidating Ford and L-M dealerships so that Mercury and Lincoln could be dropped without the huge expense GM incurred when Oldsmobile was dropped and they had to buy out over 3,000 dealers. Mercury production stops this December when the last of the 2011 modles are built. Lincoln will be gone by 2015. This is part of Alan Mulally's "One Ford" plan. As a 26 year Mercury owner I am saddened by this.
You missed the point of Mercury production ending... completely.
You can't post links in youtube comments but Ford just had a press release a few weeks ago about how Lincoln is getting 6 new models and a new Lincoln-exclusive powertrain within the next 3 years. I don't think Ford would be investing billions if they plan to end production in 2 years. Mercurys were simply rebadged Fords, while Lincoln has the potential to be at the top of the luxury brands like it used to be.
@skaterdudey77 if lincoln well ford steps up and start making newer engines not just for trucks but for cars sedans in this car. then lincolns can definaly fit in to the higher ranked luxury brands(cadillac, lexus, etc.)
BGKO1992 - "it seems like nothing happend if u were in the back seat because of the length of the car "
===========================
You are right, BGKO! First you notice that the car is not moving anymore, so you get out and walk to the front of the car and notice that it has hit that darn cement block. By that time the driver has open his door and stepped out also. God I love owning a Lincoln!
@steelstrings1312 Yeah, those mustangs are pretty safe. I saw a story in my neewspaper about some dumb kids who test drove a 2010 and crashed it at about 110. All of them survived with only minor injuries. I know a similar story involving a honda civic. Can't say the same about them.
You have got to be kidding me! If ANYONE disputes the reliability of the town car I have to laugh at you. Why do police cruisers use Crown Vics, Why do taxi cabs use them, and why do limousine companies use town cars?? Not because of their performance, thats for sure. But because they run them several hundred thousand miles and they keep going. They are cheap maintenance with decent MPG for their size and have HUGE interiors. If they weren't the most reliable car out there, they wouldnt be used
@stephenswickedcool My mother's 2007 Lincoln Town Car Signature is a piece of shit. The only reason she is driving it because it was free. Mechanically it works fine but everything else is falling apart such as the fake chrome plastic bumper trim/molding is coming off, the badges came off, the alarm and power door locks are not working, various plastic interior pieces have come off, etc. This is just from normal wear and tear. I own a BMW that is around the same age without ANY issues. My 2cents
@stephenswickedcool I'd much rather ride in a Mercedes E class taxi (which I did) than a piece of shit American Lincoln Town Car. And I'm an American... I don't see why you think it's so much better than a finely crafted E-Class...
@VhUgGz Because e-classes are expensive showoff boxes that are finely crafted to cost way more then they are really worth.
seriously if you have a lot of money and love to look like Britney spears then buy an e-class, but if your just looking for a cheap, good looking, reliable, sturdy, luxurious car, then get a towncar
@stephenswickedcool Funny fact, the mayor of New York tried to replace their taxi fleet with the Prius, but they didn't save any money. All the gas money they saved by running the Prius was lost maintaining them. Hondas and Toyotas may be reliable cars, but the Panther platform cars would survive the end of the world, they're a true workhorse.
@RnB123100 Puh-leeeeez. It's not like if someone taps your rear at 5 MPH at a stoplight, the car detonates like a bomb. The patrol cars that caught fire were parked on the side of a highway and were rear-ended at highway speeds (like 65 MPH or more) - this is NOT a typical rear-end collision for most folks. Police didn't CHOOSE to ditch the CVPI due to fires; Ford stopped making them because they replaced it with the more fuel-efficient Taurus-based Interceptor, hoping to boost sales.
@RnB123100 If you just don't like it, that's fine. But saying they're prone to explode is untrue - we have the media hype to thank for this common misconception. Unless one makes a habit of parking their car on the side of a busy highway AND sitting inside said parked vehicle while cars whiz by at 65 MPH, waiting to be rear-ended by a drunk or some nitwit teen texting while driving ... I'd say the odds of any civilian's Crown Vic "exploding" are pretty close to zero.
@stephenswickedcool, Town Cars/Crown Vics/Grand Marquis may be the most reliable car made in the past 20 years or so, and definitely is since Buick cannned the 3800 that's for sure
With a bigger car, you have more weight and force in a crash, whether with another vehicle or a still object. That extra force is dissipated in the extra long hood and roofline. If it weren't, the extra force would have entered that cabin causing massive damage. Why do you think cars of the 70's which were so tank were unsafe? No crumble zones (+ no safety technologies).
In a car on car accident a lot of the big cars force is distributed to the smaller car and its own body. So the Town Car > Mustang although the Mustang isn't too bad. Not as bad as Pintos, Astro vans, or Montana/Silhouettes.
Can your Hyundai last 400,000 miles under terrible driving conditions and poor maintenance? I don't think so. As for Panthers....it's proven. Just ask any NY cabbie.
And they aren't that bad on gas for a 4.6L V8 and a 4600 pound body. 18 City, 26 Highway.
Your Hyundai has a smaller trunk, and a smaller cabin. Not to mention it's a Hyundai.
Also, I prefer "prehistoric" technology, because A it lasts and B its much cheaper to repair. So have fun with your Hyundai. I'll stick with my TC.
Well actually, I was just reading some owner reviews online earlier today and some guy who obviously travels for a living has 210k miles on his 2006 Kia Optima, the kind of car I have. He is hoping it lasts as long as the Hyundai Elantra he used to have with 365k miles. So yes, Hyundais can be great, long lasting cars as well. I've read of Volvos being used for taxi service in other countries and lasting 700-800k miles. Panther cars aren't a longevity wonder.
See that's the problem. His Elantra lasted 365k, but is that in NYC driving? What I'm saying, Town Cars are driven constantly in a pothole driven city that gets its fair share of snow and still last 400k miles before they are sold to the public. The older 4cyl Elantras don't even have air condition.
Volvo's last quite long, I had a station wagon that I sold with 370k on it. But Panthers are easier to stretch, cheaper to maintain, and are more reliable. Volvo is owned by Ford so it's all good.
Actually his Elantra was a newer one. I'm not sure what having AC or not has to do with anything. And everybody knows, especially die-hard Volvo fans such as myself, that Volvo quality went WAY down when ford took over. Definitely not all good, not even partially good. My Mom has had 2 very good older Volvos and won't even touch the newer ones. Any car that's driven constantly for taxi use lasts longer than the avg daily commuter's car. Just the way it is.
Not having A/C does have to do with something, this is a basic feature in most cars. What I'm saying it's easier for a vehicle without a lot of features to last 365k. Less parts that are likely to break.
Most cars of old are much more reliable than todays vehicles. Probably not the 1980, early 1990 Ford's though, blame that on Ford Europe and Nasir.
Volvo's of today are using Volvo parts, in fact it was Ford who started using Volvo parts when they bought Volvo, not Volvo using Ford parts.
That's true. Less features means less problems...typically. I also agree that todays cars aren't as reliable, I think due to the increasing amount of electronics in cars, which just don't last as long as simple mechanical systems. There is no coincidence though that once Ford took over Volvo, Volvo's quality went way down and hasn't been the same since. They definitely aren't what they used to be.
Haha, you know what I love about this too? Check out other crash test videos and you'll notice the rear of the car jumps, so the rear wheels are off the road at impact. The Lincoln's rear tires never leave the ground at impact.
Well, big cars from the past were body-on-frame, not unibody. The old Body-on-frame vehicles did not have any crumble zones. The Lincoln Town Car does. The body is supposed to crumble like a tin-can. It's a body on frame. But it's the body crumpling. The frame is perfectly intact.
When you see a unibody car crash, thats the frame and body crumpling.
And anyway, their hasn't been any other car with 5 star safety in all ratings other than the Town Car. And the Town Car has done this for 7 years.
i cracked up a crown vic at 55mph, with no seatbelt on. i walked away with only an airbag burn. since then i bought an '03 towncar because i'm that confident with the body styles structure. i do have to admit tho the plastic intakes do crack quite often on the crown vics at work!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You're full of crap. At 55mph with no seatbelt, the airbag would rip your head off. Trust me, I've seen it. You guys seem to have a really distorted view of reality with these cars.
You sir are the one with a distorted view or reality here, I worked in a garage that serviced police cars, and I've seem an officer, in a car on the side of the road get rear ended by a Impala at approx 70 miles an hour, officer was writing a ticket, had no seatbelt, and walked away (with decent bruising) but walked away non-the-less. I've seen 55+ people not die in these cars without seatbelts, very serious injurys of course, but they lived.
Get back in your Nazimobile, STFU and get a life, God what a fucking douchebag seriously. What are you doing looking at Town Car videos if you dont like it anyways, you douche???
Cause they drive like hell and are supposed to be luxury. I don't get it. Underpowered gas hogs based on insanely old technology. Wow, yeah that's impressive alright. Get with the times people.
By the way, as a Town Car owner I can tell you that the entire first foot of the car is just empty space. Most of what you see crumpled in the video is said empty space. The engine doesn't start till just a bit before the front wheels and ends a bit under the dashboard.
They are also darn near bullet proof. Many a crown vic and town car has seen 300-500K miles before retiring. If they weren't good cars, cops, cabbies, and limo drivers wouldn't use them.
That can be said for most service vehicles. The average driver is lucky to get 200k out of their Town car engine, transmission, and suspension. The manifold is plastic and breaks under torque. The air suspension is a joke. It doesn't last long and ride is only ok. My Kia rides as well as the last '01 Town car I rode in. Plus it won't cost me $1000 for new shocks. These are gussied up Crown Vics for $20k more based on an friggin' old design. Engine dates to '91. Chassis dates much further back.
But the thing is, your Kia is still, well a Kia. A budget Korean car.
Either way you look at it, the Town Car and Crown Vic are a a steal compared to similar luxury cars. I will admit though, if I was buying new I would just get a top of the line Crown Vic rather than a Town Car as they have just about all of the Town Car features with a different body. I bought mine used though, so the price between the Town Car and Crown Vic was minimal.

Crown Vic is not a luxury car. It is a carryover from the ideas of yesteryears big, V8 family sedans of the 70's and 80's. It's bigger outside and smaller inside than it's competition for that reason. Old design. If you think it's old, spartan design is justified by the low price, check out the true luxury Hyundai Genesis. Much nicer car in every respect and it's cheaper than Town Car. More features, more powerful V8, and better driving experience. Town Car/Crown Vic are dinosaurs.
Oh, and btw, if your Kia was so reliable, you'd think they would use them as Taxi's, Limos and Cop Cars. Face it. Your Kia will never be as reliable as anything in the Panther Platform.
Nah that's right, their shit and when they break down, it's unibody, so you have to replace the whole fucking cast for a small dent.
Also, I prefer a V8 RWD, Body on Frame, 4000+ pound vehicle that's reliable, safe, contains La-Z boy sofa, then anything you like.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Nothing wrong with like big V8 cars. I'm saying there are better big V8 cars out there for the money. You can't even compare a base Hyundai Genesis at $32k with a loaded $32k Crown Vic. The Genesis offers a lot more in every respect. A loaded $42k Genesis offers more than a $50k Town Car. More power, better MPG, more luxury features, modern style. I could go on and on. The Town Car looks very basic and spartan in comparison, let alone compared to the Crown Vic, which is an ass-ugly box.
Well, the Genesis is a Hyundai. And I'm not sure if their going to start using Genesis' as a Limo, since they're not as reliable as the Panther's, as well as being a lot harder to repair.
Body on Frame > Unibody
And even more, the Panther Platform has a higher towing capacity then the Genesis. Larger, Comfier seats, a lot safer as it was the only car to get 5 stars IN ALL CATEGORIES, decent mpg's (25mpg highway), and a trunk that is almost 4 cubic feet larger than the Gensesis.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Good argument. I don't know about the limo thing, but it wouldn't surprise me to see a few. They won't be mainstream limo's anytime soon. There's a reason why Crown Vics are sold to fleets and Town Cars to limo companies. They produce them in huge volume and can offer them at lower prices than their competitors. It's why the Caprice went the way of the dinosaur. Police and taxi use was their main money maker for the Caprice, but GM couldn't compete with Ford on pricing. That's all.
Hyundai Equus. Look it up. Now watch Town car tuck it's tail between it's legs. Panther platform was worst performing car in side impact test. OLD DESIGN. Hyundai's V8 > power and MPG. Simple Modern unibodies have better rigidity than old body on frame cars. No creaking/ squeaking like panther cars. My '00 Marquis was horrible for that. Only reason these cars are still produced is because the tech is still used for volume fleet sales. If it weren't for that, they'd be long gone.
While side impact is worse, I've seen frontal and rear impact to be far far better then most same size or similar cars it fairs better, its a good design, think if the design aint broke and the driveline is one of the best of any American Sedan only competing with some GMs such as Buick. Newer Panthers don't squeak like the older ones.
Yeah thats it!! I want to roll up in Hyundai!! I dont care what Hyundai does with its cars. They can try and class it up all they want. You can cover a piece of turd in 24k gold but its still a piece of turd!!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The fact you even said that shows how little you know about the car, Hyundai in general, or modern perceptions. Hyundai is meeting and even beating class leaders like Honda and Toyota for quality and reliability. The current top-line Genesis (what the Equus is based on) is light-years ahead of Town Car in EVERY respect including general build quality, interior material quality, reliability, and driving dynamics. There is not a single aspect that the Town Car is superior.

If you think mass truly is the only factor for safety, watch the vid on youtube of a offset front crash test between the big Mercedes S-class and a tiny Smart car. The smart punches right through that big car. Structural design is also a key factor in safety, not just pass. You should also check out the vids of 1960's crash tests. Those cars were big like Town Cars, but they folded like aluminum. Mass AND structural design contribute to the safety of a car.
Yes, did you see the guy who was cut in half in Newfoundland Canada because he got hit by a pickup in a Smart Fortwo? There's some images on the net, and it's just some crappy half-ton pickup, I would never drive it.
God no I havn't heard of that and don't want to see it. Eww. I question the safety of the Smart because in IIHS testing, the dummy's head bottomed out the airbag and the doors popped open. That's really bad by today's standards. Beside that, because of it's tiny mass, it gets throw around too much, which puts strees on internal organs. I don't get how he would be cut in half though unless the truck jumped his hood and tore the roof off. God bless him!
My brother owns a 1998 Lincoln Town Car 3rd owner, hes had it for 5 years and it has 424k, and on 2002 and later modles that problem with the intakes were fixed, and the air suspension hasn't been a problem since 1997, I am a ASE Certified, I know what I'm talking about, and if someone quoted you $1000 for shocks, that proves you don't know anything at all! Look anywhere on the net, a pair of airshocks run $50-$180, plus install, not $1000.
I love my Town Car. I'll admit, the driver interface is a bit dated, but that is something I liked about it. It feels like your driving a more refined 1950's car. The column shifter, V8, rear wheel drive, and ladder frame give me a kick, as well as anyone else who drives it. You've got comfort, and power, all in one package. You can haul 5 adults, all their gear, and a small boat. There aren't many other cars on the market that have the room, power, and strength to do that.
So I have 95 Towncar and I was rear ended by a stupid police man going like 40 mph non-stop! My car had no dent, just little scratches. His Crown Vic police car was FUCKED UP! I told him that I fucked his car up even though he hit me! lol. I don't know about newer models, but 95-97 models is definately one of the safest car to be in.
Dumb ass. Ford is the only american car company that does not need a bail out because they build some of the most safest, most dependable cars on the market today! So you and your Audi can go hit a tree and explode into oblivion. And do some more research before you post something you fucktard!
Nice job, Ford. Yay to big roomy rear wheel drive american cars. Uniquely American. Better than anything coming from Europe or Asia. If they could make a Town Car Hybrid, i'll buy one today.
when i went to the dealer last week to test drive a new grand marquis they had to order one in, the dont keep them on the lots. im kinda worried though because the plant in canada that makes them is rumored to close in 2011. thats just a rumor though.

Talk about boring, there's nothing more boring than old granpa stile Crown Victoria! After making such crapy cars for years, no wonder American car industry is nearly dead. Such bad taste! Such large unneficient engines, in cars that can't even make curves!
Like you're one to talk. Your car industry is crappy right now too! Besides, what our RIDES lack, our DRIVERS make up for! Unlike somebody I'm talkin' to...
Shut up. That dude I mentioned had alzheimer's, aight. He shouldn't have even been driving. That's a dick move man! "American arrogance"... Says the guy from Brazil.
I was been involved in an accident with my Mother when I was 14 in a 1995 Lincoln Town Car. Dude in a Toyota MR2 Spyder ran a red light. We Rammed the Toyota in the Right rear & he spun like 4 times according to the skids. Our car was still running. Our front end was really damaged & the doors were jammed a bit. The Toyota was almost bent out of shape, Both rear tires & springs flew out, & his bumper came off. Town car is a winner in crashes, I'm living because of it. No comparison!!!!
Tu non mi piace, signore. lol. Nah, I didn't mean to correct you. It was supposed to be said a certain way, but you can't freaking transmit tones through the damn computer.

extremely reliable car these run perfect at 300,000 plus miles. I can't believe some of these newer american sedans that die out at barely over 100k. Come on people keep making these. The MPG rating is decent but they can make it better. It's sad that they are killing the last real good american sedan. after o7 they started making them in Canada but still it's the last rear wheel drive body on frame sedan. these car crumple way to bad for the size of car they are i have seen some smaller cars survive with less damage then these crown vics do so don't get smart when driving a bigger car you don't always win in an accident remember all bumpers on cars are cheap crappy plastic that you could snap off with your foot
adrianplaut 1 year ago
@adrianplaut they crumple where they should and stay in tact where they should. this way the force of the crash is pushed away from the drive and into the road or other places. this is a very safe car!
jkguitarfreak95 1 year ago
@adrianplaut look at what's behind the bumper of the panther platform vehicles, a big steel crossmember that actually works well in low speed impacts. i was riding with a friend in his Acura RSX and he rear-ended a Cadillac CTS at 5MPH and the "reinforcement bar" that is behind his bumper bent back and kinked, rendering it useless and cracking the bumper in two places. i slid into a cement-filled steel pole at a gas station last winter in my Grand Marquis and the result was paint on my bumper

It certainly isn't alcantara or leather.

hondacrxd16a6 1 year ago 5
@certosify But, if a car is very big, it has more weight moving forward which puts more force on the passenger compartment in a frontal collision.
For example, the BMW 3 series is smaller and lighter than the 5 series, and it's passenger cell holds its shape a little better than the larger 5 series in a crash.
Plus it's all about the strength and rigidity of the passenger cell, which big old
American cars (and old cars in general) had none of.

@demoskunk then how come this is the only car ever to get a 5 star crash rating in all the catergories.

@NitroGadvRules
IstvanN1961 1 year ago
@IstvanN1961

The crumble zone is either the car or you.
You need to realize the bigger the car, the more force/energy involved in the crash.
Cars of old never had crumble zones.
The reason why the Town Car crumbled was because more force was involved.
These are very sturdy cars and in real world driving the other person will get hurt, not you.
The are the only car to get 5 stars in all ratings.
Town Car > Corolla

You have got to be kidding me! If ANYONE disputes the reliability of the town car I have to laugh at you. Why do police cruisers use Crown Vics, Why do taxi cabs use them, and why do limousine companies use town cars?? Not because of their performance, thats for sure. But because they run them several hundred thousand miles and they keep going. They are cheap maintenance with decent MPG for their size and have HUGE interiors. If they weren't the most reliable car out there, they wouldnt be used

RnB123100 9 months ago

People are just facepalm these days.
No crumble zones (+ no safety technologies).

steelstrings1312 2 years ago

But I still hope you understand my point.

Panther cars aren't a longevity wonder.
palebeachbum 2 years ago
See that's the problem. His Elantra lasted 365k, but is that in NYC driving? What I'm saying, Town Cars are driven constantly in a pothole driven city that gets its fair share of snow and still last 400k miles before they are sold to the public. The older 4cyl Elantras don't even have air condition.
Volvo's last quite long, I had a station wagon that I sold with 370k on it. But Panthers are easier to stretch, cheaper to maintain, and are more reliable. Volvo is owned by Ford so it's all good.
CsalbertCs 2 years ago 4
This has been flagged as spam show
Actually his Elantra was a newer one. Just the way it is.
palebeachbum 2 years ago
Not having A/C does have to do with something, this is a basic feature in most cars. What I'm saying it's easier for a vehicle without a lot of features to last 365k. Less parts that are likely to break.
Most cars of old are much more reliable than todays vehicles. Probably not the 1980, early 1990 Ford's though, blame that on Ford Europe and Nasir.
Volvo's of today are using Volvo parts, in fact it was Ford who started using Volvo parts when they bought Volvo, not Volvo using Ford parts.
CsalbertCs 2 years ago 3
That's true. Less features means less problems...typically. I also agree that todays cars aren't as reliable, I think due to the increasing amount of electronics in cars, which just don't last as long as simple mechanical systems. There is no coincidence though that once Ford took over Volvo, Volvo's quality went way down and hasn't been the same since. They definitely aren't what they used to be.

Haha, you know what I love about this too? Check out other crash test videos and you'll notice the rear of the car jumps, so the rear wheels are off the road at impact. The Lincoln's rear tires never leave the ground at impact.
CsalbertCs 2 years ago
Well, big cars from the past were body-on-frame, not unibody. The old Body-on-frame vehicles did not have any crumble zones. The Lincoln Town Car does. The body is supposed to crumble like a tin-can. It's a body on frame. But it's the body crumpling. The frame is perfectly intact.
When you see a unibody car crash, thats the frame and body crumpling.
And anyway, their hasn't been any other car with 5 star safety in all ratings other than the Town Car. And the Town Car has done this for 7 years.

By the way, as a Town Car owner I can tell you that the entire first foot of the car is just empty space. Most of what you see crumpled in the video is said empty space. The engine doesn't start till just a bit before the front wheels and ends a bit under the dashboard.
wheelmanvw 2 years ago
They are also darn near bullet proof. Many a crown vic and town car has seen 300-500K miles before retiring. If they weren't good cars, cops, cabbies, and limo drivers wouldn't use them.
wheelmanvw 2 years ago 4
That can be said for most service vehicles. The average driver is lucky to get 200k out of their Town car engine, transmission, and suspension. The manifold is plastic and breaks under torque. The air suspension is a joke. It doesn't last long and ride is only ok. My Kia rides as well as the last '01 Town car I rode in. Plus it won't cost me $1000 for new shocks. These are gussied up Crown Vics for $20k more based on an friggin' old design. Engine dates to '91. Chassis dates much further back.
palebeachbum 2 years ago
But the thing is, your Kia is still, well a Kia. A budget Korean car.
Either way you look at it, the Town Car and Crown Vic are a a steal compared to similar luxury cars. I will admit though, if I was buying new I would just get a top of the line Crown Vic rather than a Town Car as they have just about all of the Town Car features with a different body. I bought mine used though, so the price between the Town Car and Crown Vic was minimal.
wheelmanvw 2 years ago 3
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Crown Vic is not a luxury car. Town Car/Crown Vic are dinosaurs.
palebeachbum 2 years ago
Thanks Pale! That's how I like my tanks.
CsalbertCs 2 years ago 5
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Nothing wrong with like big V8 cars. The Town Car looks very basic and spartan in comparison, let alone compared to the Crown Vic, which is an ass-ugly box.
palebeachbum 2 years ago
Well, the Genesis is a Hyundai. And I'm not sure if their going to start using Genesis' as a Limo, since they're not as reliable as the Panther's, as well as being a lot harder to repair.
Body on Frame > Unibody
And even more, the Panther Platform has a higher towing capacity then the Genesis. Larger, Comfier seats, a lot safer as it was the only car to get 5 stars IN ALL CATEGORIES, decent mpg's (25mpg highway), and a trunk that is almost 4 cubic feet larger than the Gensesis.
CsalbertCs 2 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Good argument. That's all.
palebeachbum 2 years ago
I think it's more than just pricing my friend.
CsalbertCs 2 years ago
Hyundai Equus. Look it up. Now watch Town car tuck it's tail between it's legs. Panther platform was worst performing car in side impact test. OLD DESIGN. Hyundai's V8 > power and MPG. Simple Modern unibodies have better rigidity than old body on frame cars. No creaking/ squeaking like panther cars. My '00 Marquis was horrible for that. Only reason these cars are still produced is because the tech is still used for volume fleet sales. If it weren't for that, they'd be long gone.
palebeachbum 2 years ago
While side impact is worse, I've seen frontal and rear impact to be far far better then most same size or similar cars it fairs better, its a good design, think if the design aint broke and the driveline is one of the best of any American Sedan only competing with some GMs such as Buick. Newer Panthers don't squeak like the older ones.

Mass AND structural design contribute to the safety of a car.
palebeachbum 2 years ago

God no I havn't heard of that and don't want to see it. Eww. I question the safety of the Smart because in IIHS testing, the dummy's head bottomed out the airbag and the doors popped open. That's really bad by today's standards. Beside that, because of it's tiny mass, it gets throw around too much, which puts strees on internal organs. I don't get how he would be cut in half though unless the truck jumped his hood and tore the roof off. God bless him!

Probably 8 years or so ago you could in your country. Not anymore your leader is dead STFU!

Nice job, Ford. Yay to big roomy rear wheel drive american cars. Uniquely American. Better than anything coming from Europe or Asia. If they could make a Town Car Hybrid, i'll buy one today.

it looks like a nice car, but that's about where it ends.
ford tried to kill the Panther platform with the 500. it didn't work.
khaosdemon2 2 years ago
i'd be proud to have that be the successor to the crown vic.
at least it's not the focus or the ford 500.

PyroHurd92 3 years ago
so far as i can tell, the crown victoria is for fleet use only now. but you can still buy the grand marquis for civilian use.

it's fleet now. the town car and grand marquis are on their way to fleet only soon, i fear.
khaosdemon2 2 years ago
when i went to the dealer last week to test drive a new grand marquis they had to order one in, the dont keep them on the lots. im kinda worried though because the plant in canada that makes them is rumored to close in 2011. thats just a rumor though.

A couple of years back, I saw a guy back an '03 Towncar broadside into a '81 F150.
The truck was thrown into a brick wall 10 feet behind it, and crushed like a can! The Lincoln only had a scratch.

Talk about boring, there's nothing more boring than old granpa stile Crown Victoria! After making such crapy cars for years, no wonder American car industry is nearly dead. Such bad taste! Such large unneficient engines, in cars that can't even make curves!
leolima2303 3 years ago
Like you're one to talk. Your car industry is crappy right now too! Besides, what our RIDES lack, our DRIVERS make up for! Unlike somebody I'm talkin' to...
Hype679 3 years ago
"What our rides lack, our drivers make up for"... American arrogance, right there! Coming from people that cant even deal with a shift box...
leolima2303 3 years ago
Shut up. That dude I mentioned had alzheimer's, aight. He shouldn't have even been driving. That's a dick move man! "American arrogance"... Says the guy from Brazil.
Hype679 3 years ago
Who's talking about alzheimer? My conversation is about cars, dude. And as far as I'm concerned, I'm right and you're wrong. American cars suck!
leolima2303 3 years ago
Whatever dude. Now your just bein' childish. Okay? You can say they suck, it's your opinion. I however just disagree.
Hype679 3 years ago
then what cars have your country produced?
khaosdemon2 2 years ago
Cars that can't make curves? What are you talking about?
I can throw a full-size Chevy around a 90 degree curve at 75km/h. I know, because I've done it.
Sure, I took two lanes on the connecting street to make the curve, but anybody want to try to best that in a Ferrari?
I bet you could do it, but no better.

Small hatchbacks have to be stronger than big cars, so thats no wonder.
