Wow....now this is that kinda of gospel music i grew up on. Cissy was working this song out and she was on point too. Had me ready to do something special here at work as i am listening to this. These people i work around wanted to see Whitney's mom in action in the old days so i took them here and they are in shock at hearing her. I asked them....where do you think Whitney got it from? That singing gene runs deep in her family....real deep. Goes back many moons before Whitney was even born.
I can see that Cissy has both alto and soprano capabilities....she really was a wonderful gifted singer. No wonder Aretha and Luther loved to use her in their background....oh yea, and Elvis too.
You know Cissy Houston is the real singer and teacher of Whitney Houston. i love that old school gospel sound. The growls and belting that this women is able to do is truly legendary. Any day is a Cissy Houston DAY when she is singing with the drinkard singers
WONDERFUL!! This group could really "sang!" I've got no problem with people referring to Whitney Houston since she is Cissy's daughter and gospel is her roots. Sad that such a lovely talented woman got into drugs and got married to the abusive Bobby Brown. Maybe if she turned back to her gospel roots (strong gospel like this) she could get the strength to rebuild her life. Back to the Drinkards: now this, strong, raw, singing is, for me, the REAL gospel! Holy Ghost is here!
@KojiRecords If you can't figure out why people are mentioning Whitney then maybe you are the real idiot! She has EVERYTHING to do with this piece. It includes her mother, aunts and uncle. It represents her roots. What has nothing to do with this piece is the drug addiction she has OVERCOME. The only comment these singers would find disrespectful is the one posted by you.
@lemons82 Your illogical and really hysterical comment proves my point: Whitney not only has nothing to do with The Drinkard Singers, maybe if she listened to the message of the group she would have not touched the crack pipe; any Whitney references would be justified had she been a member of The Drinkard Singers---which she was not. Give respect to The Drinkard Singers by posting comments here about THEM----and what a wonderful performance they give in this rare footage; thanks for posting
@KojiRecords There was nothing illogical or hysterical about what I said. It was the truth. But since you could not find a logical response, you made a sad attempt to dismiss it. You are the nutty one, coming on a video and getting angry with people for daring to talk about part of this family's legacy. While you are so busy trying to comfort yourself with Whitney's shortcomings, the rest of us continue to enjoy her accomplishments and happen to be interested in where she came from.
@lemons82 Fact: Miss Whitney Houston was indeed the greatest singer of all time---period. She simply threw away her God-given talent, one that will never ever be replaced.. On "The Magic of Believing" album is credited to Dionne & The Drinkard Singers (Scepter Records); I remember an interview with Cissy, who said she went into the studio with Dionne to do that album but who were the others? Special thanks to Florence Greenberg for allowing Dionne & The Drinkards to make that album; RIP Florence
Gospellin you got some great posts. That lead singer is a BEAST! I love it. It is so cool to see these singer just stand flat footed and just blow the roof off of the place!
@gospellin You have got to be kidding??! I am going to listen to this one again. No wonder Dionne and Whitney can sing...it's in their blood...but these people have the voices that other singers wish that they had.
I post these videos to pay tribute to the artists of the era. The entire Drinkard & Warrick family din't receive the recognition they so well deserve. It's only natural that the name Whitney pops up since she is a part of the family. Whatever happens to a family member they're still family. It's a disservice to her mom who loves her dearly for anyone to shoot arrows at her daughter. Unless you've made no mistakes in your life just, be careful of the stones you throw.
I wish I was born in the early '60s so I could see this as a child as well of the great music of the '60s-'80s and be age appropriate to marry Whitney today!
Wow. I see Whitney didn't look much like Cissy even when Cissy was young! But the pipes were passed right down the gene pool. Cissy's vocals apparently were never as polished as her daughter's, but just listen closely at the end of the song, and you just might catch a bit of pretty, Whitney-esque melody in the Cissy's "unto Meeeeeeee."
P.S. Anybody know why the group was called the Drinkard Singers?
Cissy was the best singer of her time. Ree and Patti are the only ones that keep up with her. Cissy is bad vocally like no other like her daughter. That woman can sang!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Whitney get her stage presence from Cissy along with Dione. Notice she does not need to move an inch to hit the high notes. So much control!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cissy is the truth vocally. I say she outsings Ree anyday! Cissy was truly the best singer of her generation and I think to sound degree Patti was influence by Ree and Cissy.
2:27-2:28 that where the Clarks get the growling and squailing. So Karen Clark Sheard and Twinkie right there. Cissy and Ree are the singers who influence what see in gospel today. They were doing that stuff since the 50's
