  • this is freaking amazing. I love this song!!!

  • *CHEERS* Excellent!

  • me and my stepdad are both Pagan but the rest of our family is Christian and that is how it is like during the holidays. I hope one day the rest of his family will realize its not that big of a deal

  • I want that guitar. Sounds great.

  • DAR!

  • This is one of my FAVORITE songs EVER! :D

  • Happy Birthday Dar!

    (April 19th)

  • This makes me want to cry too, this awful.

  • this is awesome

  • awesome song

  • I kind of cried a little.

  • Dar Williams is one of the best folk singers of our time!

  • @bighairlindsey Have to disagree. Ani DiFranco.

  • Dar Williams has a real purty mouf.

  • i'm a witch.

    BB

  • I've never heard this one before. What a great song!!! Blessed be!

  • Thank you. Couldn't have come at a better time!

  • Nice!

  • man i LOVE this song!!!

  • It blows my mind that someone could post something hateful about this. (Elsewhere here on YouTube ) She's talking about peace, and understanding between opposites. Love and openmindedness. I can very much relate to this song. Mother Keep You, Father Hold You

  • @Kahltira

you talking about the guy with the cross guitar and the white robe? yeah i can't believe anyone would want to say something hateful about this song. its really good.

  • Love these lyrics.

  • MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

  • @Christadarling And Happy Yule :) (A few days late though XD)

  • I only discovered this song this summer, but I love it so much. I like the message it sends that you can find common ground with your friends and family during the holidays. :)

  • What a lovely song!

  • I wonder where all my Ancestors went off too? All those Pagans just fell off the side of the earth i guess! I remember the american indians brought the pligrims food one winter and they set down at a table together too. I wish i could remember how the christians thanked those indians.

  • I probably commented a year ago. But I want to share this with my Christian and atheist contacts on Yahoo! Answers in their Religion & Spirituality forum.

To all good people of ALL paths I wish you peace, love, laughter and magic on this special of all seasons.

  • hecate55,

    Well said!

Thank you and have a wonderful holiday season.

    Blessed be.

  • Christian or pagan, it dosnt matter so long as we all remeber the glory of pie and how it has served us thru the years and is the only thing truly worthy of our love

  • @Jackofdiamonds770 Glory to the Gods of Pie!

  • BEAUTIFUL-loved this truly wonderful song. Amber and her partner sharing holiday dinner with her uncle's family. Tolerance, unity and love-can't get any better during this holiday season. Muchas gracias for sharing.

    Pax/Peace

  • Are some of these people retarded? (Yes, I use that politically incorrect term because it fits!!!) This song isn't even about religion! It's about homosexuality - Dar and her gf shocking the family with their relationship, not their religion. Either way, it shows what a bunch of intolerant idiots we have in this world.

  • She also has a son, and sings about boyfriends. I guess people can't get the idea of tolerance, and have to find reasons to pick.

  • How do you figure? She puts Amber and Jane in the storytelling, but that is hardly the focus of the song.

  • @Plager82003 HUH.... no, idiot. it's about xtians and pagans

  • Just WONDERFUL. BB!

  • I adore this song ^.^ my aunt Mariah *who is a minister* told me about it, and i cried the first time i heard and now every time I hear it i get all smiley and my inner spirit feels so peaceful and it makes my heart and soul swell. Its amazing how a song that seems so simple can mean so much to ones spirit. Blessed be!

  • Can't we all just get along!>. like the songs says!!!!!

  • I agree with trivtav011

  • Beautiful comedic parody =) Very good for either Pagans or Christians to listen to. People who can't understand or bad mouth the song just have too closed minds.

  • I absolutely love Dar Williams. I wish she'd come back to Ann Arbor, MI, at the ARK. I think we had amoment, before she was married of course. But still I'd love to share a moment with her beautiful lyrics!

  • it's about loving others regardless of their faith. the quote you reference is a historical reference to the salem witch trials. I thought it was deep, but if you do not remember the history perhaps not so much? Peace.

  • ok you person, we don't want a fight. But the Nazis were Christans, sorry ta say it love, but thats how they started. Hitler was a christan. a twisted christan if i must say so. im 13 and i know that. :) yay fpr learning history. this is one of my fav songs. so please... And i complety despise Britney Spears. :D hasta. :)

  • Hi, this makes no sense to me.... If Hitler was a Pagan why did he kill off the Jews? If he had any kinda grudge, shouldn't it be against the Christians? And even if there was a reason and he was Pagan, I don't really think he would count as a true pagan because he totally twisted and killed all of our 'laws'...... Like someone who doesn't read and/or follow the bible isn't really a Christian, more like a Christian wanna-be.... Anyway, I think the song is great :D. )O(

  • Well, there seems like a lot good people who like it here, so that's cool

  • The horrors of the libertarian world was written about by Dickens and Hugo.

    NO THANK YOU!

This country was NOT founded on liebertarian sophistry.

Liebertarianism "provides" for nothing except a prison without guards ruled by sociopaths.

    Puleeze

Forgive me Dar, this has NOTHING to do with your beautiful song.

  • yes actually it was and most of the founding fathers not only were not religious but disliked religion many of them are qouted saying negative things toward religion

  • Don't forget the "founding fathers" escaped England fleeing religious persecution by "Bloody Mary". They knew what religious intolerance was about!

  • The founding fathers were NOT Christians. They left England because they wanted complete freedom this means they also wanted the freedom of religion so just because freedom of religion was on the list of rights that humans should have does not mean that the founding fathers were religious they wanted freedom for EVERY man Religion should play no part in politics (seperation of church and state) becuase there are multiple religions and to have one in control will take away freedoms from others

  • I agree with you completely. Religion and the State should have nothing with each other. I firmly believe in freedom to worship whoever/whatever you wish to believe in - as long as you hurt NO ONE in the name of it. Someone's religion is his/her own business. Blessed be!

  • exactly...which is why we shouldnt have official praying and talking about god and gods in schools and government affairs or have the ten commandments in government buildings all that should be strictly science leaving religion to be taught by parents and religious leaders

  • shut the hell up freedom of speech is just for the guys with the bigger microphone if someone went on stage and said "fuck god, i would like to piss on jesus's face" they wouldnt be on the stage for a second more

  • I'm studying World War II history at university and I can tell you that Hitler was not involved in the occult. Multiple time in Mein Kampf Hitler states that they have to defend the Christian state (Germany) against the jews, among other references to Christianity (I can get you the page numbers but it might take a little while because it is finals season). One the first things that we always deal with in a World War II course is the fact that Hitler ... Continued

  • Contined from above

was not involved in the occult and that he was not Jewish. Those are two myths about him that are always dealt with at the beginning of the courses on it. The notion that Hitler was involved in the occult is just a myth.

  • First of all I would like to know what academic sources you have that say this because in my research (yes, I did my own on the topic after discussing it in class) I could find none. Secondly eugenics does not entail a lack of religion, organizations existed in Canada and the US that practised eugenics until it became unpopular because of the Nazis. Those people were religious. Thirdly, while Hitler's book does contain propaganda that is not all that it contains (eg. Hitler's plans, etc.)

  • 1. Do a cursory search and/or use your common sense. I can't say anymore. does 2. Eugenics was based on pseudo-science, science as they saw it at the time; It was not based on religion, and never was associated with Christianity. Forced sterilizations of 60,000 was absurd and archaic. Does that compare to 12 million murdered in Nazi death camps? And yes, Eugenics was and is practiced in the US today-Margaret Sanger founded Planned Parenthood based on it-and the company still practices it.

  • Sorry it took so long to get back to you I was writing term papers and finals. The academic research of many scholars, some names include Bullock, Toland, and Fest. There are other names that I can provide for you if you like. They have effectively argued that Hitler, like many individuals at the time, was highly superstitious. An example of this is when he broke a silver hammer at the opening of a building, the crowd present thought it was a bad sign. Continued

  • Continued from above.

Hitler's secretary has been documented in multiple sources saying that unlike Himmler, categorically that hitler had nothing but contempt for such practices, referring to practises associated with the occult, although faith in the stars was certainly common among some of his followers. On a different note, the forced sterilization occurred in the 1900s in Canada and the US. The number you quoted is closer to the number sterilized in the province

    Coninued

  • Continued from above

quoted is closer to the number sterilized in the western Canadian provinces alone (sorry about the typo in the last line of the previous comment box).

  • I don't think that you are getting the point. Saying that Hitler was or had Christian beliefs does not mean that the individual hates Christianity. Also my argument is not analogous to saying that you can't convict someone of murder if you don't see it. My argument is similar to saying you can't convict someone of murder without the evidence to back it up. The evidence supports Hitler being supersitious, not an occultist.

    Brightest Blessings

  • lol WOW people ARE really fucked up. All i'm saying is i read books. i like.learning. i love this song. and wtf happens! a fight breaks out cause stupid dipshits cant AND wont keep their views to their selves? lol kinda ironic?

  • a fight? bitch this is a debate this what i do for entertainment while im home alone so stop bothering me lol

  • Me too. I love it. :) )O(

  • This song gives me chills-i love it!

  • you gave my sister and I the strength to come put to your Christian family last winter on solstice. It was truly a magical winter and the last year has brought so much learning for my family. We thank you!

  • Intolerance is evil. Open your minds.

  • If people could only open thier minds like this song yearns for we would have a happier place. Being pagan its refreshing to hear a song that brings unity and peace. Merry part, Blessed be, and always know "No war was started in the name of Wicca."

  • Christianity is NOT 100% historically accurate. The bible was slapped together fifty years minimun after the facts. Even our court systems do not trust 100% eyewitness accounts. People always put their own slant on things either to look better in the eyes of others or to push an agenda. You may have secular historians, but I have science, archeology, anthropology, etc. to backup with hard evidence. The SUN created the SON. So...Blessed Be.

  • People who believe that are the reason why there is no hope for humanity.

  • Son>sun

  • why would you post that, every other religion on the planet is ok with not putting other religons down. The reson some christians do is they dont have any faith in christianity and need to put down other religions to help them belive in there own, kinda like a bully picks on kids in a playground to forget he is the insecure one.

  • She looks so beautiful in this one.

  • I love this song... It give me the chills. This is a reminder to everyone to keep an open mind and don't judge people because of their beliefs.

  • This is what I'm starting to believe coming from a Christain stand point and the crap that I've always heard. Thanks,Matt.

  • If your a pagan then can you tell me what you know as far as Dec 25th and what does this mean to you. Thanks, Matt.

  • As Wiggle pointed out, yes, it is essentially the birth of the sun. The Solstice festival where evergreens are brought together and candles are lit is a way for us to remind the Earth of what she once had in summer: green, life, and light. It's basically our way of celebrating these things when we have them the least with the hope that the energy we put forth will help usher in the new season.

  • Thanks for the info, and thanks for not slamming me right off the bat for being a christain, and being respectfull.

  • Hey, no problem! I personally ascribe to the Hindu belief of "Many Paths to One Summit;" that is to say, whatever spiritual path you find that works for you, follow it faithfully, and you shall find your own heaven.

  • in the winter solstice the Sun of God dies each year being located in the lowest point of the sky for three days

he is located in those three days under the constellation of the Crux

    symbolically being crucified

but after those three days the Sun symbolically "resurrects" and the day grows in duration again until the Summer solstice after which he again starts losing his powers

this process symbolizes the cycles of death and life

the resurrection is usually celebrated in the spring equinox =D

  • O.K. thanks for the info, wow thats more detail then I new it to be. Have a good one.

  • I absolutely adore this. : ) I will most definitely play it on Yule this year.

    Blessed Be. )O(

    - Summer

  • I can't understand the lyrics.

  • Can't understand what she's saying over the music, or can't understand the meaning? I'd be glad to help with either one!

  • Could you post the lyrics?

  • It's too bad about the spam, because this is really a special and important song. I first heard it when a man in my church sang it for a service shortly before Christmas, and found it very moving then. I'm glad to hear the composer sing it in this video.

  • Why is every comment on this song spam? That's ridiculous!

  • In 1978 I had come home from the Army on leave and a former friend of mine wanted me to do a duet with him and my new guitar and I joked to the student union audience I FEEL LIKE A LION BEING THROWN TO THE CHRISTIANS!

  • I've loved this song from the first moment I heard it. I think there a lot of people (Christians, pagans, Jews, whatever) that forget the basis of many major world religions. Religion is really supposed to be about peace within oneself as well as with others. I always said that if a person can find a way of life that leads to inner peace, then that is the path he or she must follow.

  • Beautifull indeed , Pagans and Christianss should get allong better

    I would know I'm eclectic

  • Beautiful Song,

  • Beautiful I think I'll feature it on my page for a while...

    ATF of Axiom of Discord

  • Thank you I really enjoyed this. You sing beautifully

  • i have to say lady williams, if only the world really worked that way what a wonderfull place that would be. if every person in the world could just put aside there differences, which really isn't that hard, the world could truely know peace. i'm a pagan but my family is christian. some try to convert me back, some say that i'll burn in hell, there are a few like in your song. that don't judge me and i can have a civil conversation with, the odd part is they accept my gay cousine but not me.

  • wow nice

  • I really, really enjoyed this song. You have no idea what this song means to me. Thank you. Thank you so much. x

  • This song is absolutely glorious!!!

I'm a heathen, and I've my problems with the dogma of popular Christianity.

But not all cling to the dogma and b.s.

If the dogma could be thrown out, and the focus could shift to "how to do right by ppl (and god)", something beautiful could rise up to fill the Christians' way again.

But what are the chances of that...? heh

    We can hope, I guess.

  • wow this song makes me so emotional..but its funny too. its just great!

  • I'll have to check our Best of Pagan Song CD, but isn't this a new last verse?

  • Just saw Dar in Greenville SC at The Handlebar-a FANTASTIC room to see artists. I've loved her since I saw her in Asheville NC with Joan Baez years ago. All you baby boomers, check out her song "You're Aging Well". And Dar there are lots of non-christians in NC & SC-no worries!

  • Thanks Dar. I was able to meet her last night. What a treat!. I loved the concert ( in Jax) Her new CD is great.

  • i just went to a concert today!

dar is my idol, i love her so much.

she sang this and it made me cry. shes so beautiful and amazing.

thank you for being so great dar.

  • I love this song, it actually outlines my family, only my uncle wasn't so accepting... Goddess Bless

  • Love this song and Dar! Thanks for sharing it.

  • This is a very interesting song. Never heard of Dar Williams before tonight. Thanks for sharing!

  • I love it!

  • woah. this song is deep.

  • There is only one God/ Goddess/ Divine/ One/ Beyond Personal, active in all, known by many names. The definition is not the reality it attempts to define. The experience is true, the words are false. All who love, are one with the One who is love.

  • That's one of many good guesses.

  • Her voice is not fantastic, but this song makes me happy. I love the line about how only pumpkin pies are burning.

  • This is one of my favourite songs. :)

  • I love this song. My old sophomore english professor told me about it then he didn't actually play it for me till i was a senior.

  • Love this song, glad I found it^^

  • Blessed be. This is absolutely beautiful.

  • What a beautiful, happy, sad, wonderful holiday song.

  • Your teacher's kind of a dip.

  • that is your teacher's opinion. what's yours?

  • Wow I love this song. =)

  • I absolutely love this song. I made me think how lucky I am that most of my Christian family has been nothing but supportive of my chosen religion.(Wicca) I really connected with this song and may the Gods bless Dar Williams!

  • My friend is Wiccan, and isn't very...talkative? Would you mind telling me a bit about it?

  • acctually, anyone can learn from this. Pagans and Christians are fairly stareotypical rivals, and to here a beautiful song about the two coming together- well that makes everybody think.

  • I heard this song a couple years ago but no one could tell me who sang it. I am glad to have found this, thank you for posting it. It is something both Christians and Pagans can learn from.

  • Thank you so much for sharing this, you have no idea how much it touched me. Blessed be.

  • This is what happens when a brilliant artist such as Dar writes and performs so eloquently: it sparks heated debate. Will this shitstorm of commentary solve the worlds' problems? Um... NO! Neither is Dar Williams making any attempt to do anything like that, but, ya know? There are millions of folks like me she touches deeply within our hearts with what she communicates. We identify with her stories and characters... and yes, it certainly is "emotionally uplifting". Goddess bless Dar Williams.

  • we are one from the same tree blessed be to dar..

  • Hate to sound like a fluff bunny, but this song is the most emotionally uplifting thing I've heard in a long time, and an inspiration for us all.

  • If you kill a terminally ill cancer patient, is it still murder? That is what we are basically arguing. We can never technically take a person's life, seeing as we all die at some point anyway. We can only take time from their lives.

Considering this, murder is no less murder when the person would have died by nature, their own hand, the hand of their own people, or the hand of some one from another 'group'.

  • Excuse me, Hulk, but if I may, you are making multiple generalizations. One is that all Native Americans kill each other (hasn't every race killed others of its own?)

Second, the Mayans, Incas, and the Natives that were killed during the colonization of the United States are all different. Creeks, Seminoles, Sioux, etc. Individuals are different within those different groups. Think before you generalize.

  • I appreciate your criticism and indeed you are correct, i concede that i have generalized. But indeed was my response not one in defence of a generalization? To not listen to christians because they killed native americans, correct? What I meant to illustrate is that his statement is also an absurd generalization about christians. Consider that before you criticize my intent.

  • "That was inspiring. I really hope your message in this song breaks wide open, and that you have continued success in your career. -- A Wiccan."

I'm with the Wiccan on this one. -- A Christian.

  • I want to hug you right now. I wish more Christians were like you. I'm not a Wiccan, but I was raised in the goddess tradition.

  • lol that's annoying, my comment below was meant in response to 'IncredibleHulk12'.

Seriously man, don't spread hate and ignorance when you don't know what you're talking about.

  • I am Christian and I love the message of this song. The world needs to hear what Dar is saying.

  • I wish I could hug you and know that this goddess-worshipping pantheist stands steadfastly by what you say.

  • Wow, have listened to her music for 12 years....this is first time i've ssen live footage...can i get this on DVD?
