I've been observing very closely all of the vid clipsl concerts....Definitely Arnels Pineda has a better style, a tenor voice and liven the band up more and fans!

Steve Perry created the sound and everyone else is covering it. I can cover Steve Perry's voice too, it doesn't make me a great original singer though, and I haven't gotten rich from it. So it is better to have your own style.
If they sang in their own style, none of the singers would sound like Steve Perry, it's just vocal impersonation. They all did a good job at that.

I don't really get it...why compare? Why judge Arnel? Why judge Steve? Why judge any of them? They all just gave it a shot. Some didn't workout, well then ok. But judging won't do anything good. It's not like it's going to change anything. And stop judging Arnel. I'm not saying this because I'm a Filipino but because Arnel just grabbed the opportunity. Let the guy follow his dream.
steve perry and steve augerie has the same voice, i think deen castronovo is the same as well but i cannot tell due to poor audio, jeff scott's voice is bigger, and arnel's a little huskier and powerful.

As I see it, the problem with replacing the lead singer of a successful band is that a bands sound is often deeply linked to the original lead singer so much so that they never quite can replace him/her and keep the same level of success. There are very few cases where this has worked, VanHalen and ACDC, however in other cases it hasn't like with Genesis. I for one would rather see Journey with Steve, Genesis with Phil, Styx with Dennis DeYoung although Gowan is great, know what I mean?
All tenors have almost same voice. Who can distinguish Pavarotti from Lanza or from other opera singers? Hence, whoever is the lead singer of Journey at present is the best. Today, it's Arnel's time. Congrats for making it to the Journey, Arnel!
Jeff scott was the WORST. I think I could do a better job lol. I think Steve Aguera was the 2nd best, although he wasn't even close, then the philipino guy. His accent ruins it for me though.
And of course, Hugo from the band Evolution is better than all of them... except Steve Perry of course.

@kimsaber I hope you are not claiming that Arnel was/is the best. It is not clear if you meant wasn't or just was. Either way, Arnel clearly is not the best fill in for Steve Perry. Augeri and Deen did a far better job of covering Perry's material than Arnel does. If Augeri's voice would have held up or If Deen would have had the front man personality, not shy and wanted the lead vocal gig, Arnel would still be an unknown.
Deen Castronovo for MVP! Playing the Steve Smith drum parts & singing Steve Perry's vocals is definitely no walk in the park for anybody. DC did extremely well doing both!!
It's just amazing that they can find these guys that sound almost identical to Steve. I mean, almost exactly the same!! It's crazy. I just wish they could mend fences with Steve and get the original band back together. Everyone else is doing it, why not them??!!

Arnel got more tone and range of vocals than the others...but still they are all a good singer with powerful vocals....but in my opinion we should accepted that Arnel sings better than Steve Perry in his prime does in live performance, after listening and comparing in soo many of the live performance..
While all the other singers did a fine job replacing Perry ,I think Arnel is the one who did the songs justice the best. Of course there will never be another Perry .Unfortunately ,Journey decided to go on without him .
There really is no comparing Steve Perry to any of these other blokes. He is leagues above the rest and they're just trying to copy him. The all have great voices but Perry's is the purest and he MADE Journey. They were nothing before with Neil Schoon singing.

when i was 4-5 years old I was stuck with my cousins listening to these power ballads by Journey, Foreigner, etc. Let me tell you guys that made for sad memories and sad afternoons! I always thought these songs belonged to sleazy cabarets in the 1980's. Its a good thing I discovered Led Zepellin!! Anyway, I think Arnel P. and Steve P. are cut from the same mold. they're different from the rest but I can't say they're better. Each one of them are outstanding vocalists.
Arnel is great but I just don't think he has the same rhythm sensibilities that Steve Perry has. It's very uncommon for a great melodic singer to have great rhythm too. Steve Perry was a drummer before he became a front man. Don't get me wrong, Arnel is perfect for the part.
perry wins. helpful, the snippets of each. the realization becomes clearer. perry wins. there is footage of journey w/ robert fleishman in 1977. it is a little cringe worthy, where i would have to rank soto at times. i realize he was just filling in, but it does not feel right. perry wins. it is a bummer to fill such known shoes.

You are right about Perry being the best. SP, in his prime, could sing circles around anyone. But I say, give Arnel a chance. I saw Journey in concert back in July and Arnel jammed. You are missing out on some good music by not listening to Journey's new stuff. I don't think SP could match Arnel today. Not taking anything from SP, but his voice has aged. Not his fault obviously, but I think SP hitting the high notes days are over. I choose to embrace JOURNEY. Cheers.
The fact that Journey has used Steve Perry as the template for his replacements is the ultimate tribute Perry. Augeri was awesome. Jeff Scott was awesome. Even Dean covered admirably. Arnel carries on the (Perry) tradition beautifully. Journey (still) rocks!!!
I think what the Steve Perry purists have forgotten is that Journey DISCOVERED Arnel Pineda. And that with a few exceptions, bands do routinely change members over the years.
trust me man. steve could hit way higher notes than arnel with ease. arnel really has to strain and his high notes are weak sometimes. steve just always owns those notes

Being a Journey fan growing up, I 2nd what rofl1011 says about Steve being the 'iconic figure' he is. However, he (steve) chose to leave Journey and do his own thing, which is his prerogative; Now, "Journey" is trying to find someone w/a similar voice, which makes sense. As for me, I think Arnel has been the best replacement for Perry and fits the band just as well as if Perry were back up front!
Perry rules. He's the original, but he's gone now. Replacing a legend is tough to do, but Arnel does the job wonderfully. If people are so foolish that they would allow their prejudices to rob them of the opportunity to enjoy Journey's music, then that is there loss.
AP's the best his voice is masculine,clear, powerful, soulful, whole perfect sounds heartedly and extendedly can hit the higher notes longer than da rest of them.

both arnel and steve have very powerful voices...of course steve is the original while arnel is the suitable replacement..like a car machine, if the installed original part needs to be replaced, whatever thing that'll be replaced can't be called the original part already...BUT "ARNEL" is the MOST APPROPRIATE REPLACEMENT that keeps the motor running for JOURNEY...NOTE: music passes through ears not eyes...we don't need physical beauty for ears to hear..what we need is the SOUND OF THE VOICE...

Keep in mind, all who are defending him, that Steve Perry was and in some ways still remains the iconic figure of the band. It 's just gonna take a while to get used to it. And the reason people are reacting so harshly to him is because he looks so unlike Perry. I would react the same way still if he was white, black, orange whatever. Don't make it into a race thing.
If you ask me, I think Dean sounds most like Perry, yet I still fully believe Perry was in fact the best. I'm not downplaying anyone of the other guys, it's a big thing to step up to the plate and fill Steve Perry's spot and all of them did/do a good job. It's just that there's still no voice like "The Voice," the voice of Steve Perry.

Perry outshines all the others, who are trying so hard to imitate him. Soto at least had a totally different voice. None of them are bad, but Perry is on a totally different level for quality, clarity emotion and ORIGINALITY, if you know what I mean!

okay, i listened only it's pineda , perry , augerri, in that order. my personal opinion only. sad that at this day and age people still judge your ability by your looks and be vocal about it. .journey was an all white american rock band,so i understand that a lot of journey fans cannot stand let alone accept a non white frontman. i am sure before neal and jon and the rest of the management hired pineda that was discussed. but with his talent they took a chance and it paid off very well for them.
Perry's studio versions were awesome coz hiss inflections can be more clearly heard without the noise from the crowd. Hence, he can be more soulful but in a live settingt where Arnel has been singing practically his entire career day in day out he simply blows Perry away. Even the digitally remastered Perry live songs i.e. Faithfully, pale in comparison coz one key ingredient is missing and that is POWER especially in an open air arena where it is a must to stay above the instrumentals.
WoW Arnel is the perfect match for Journey comparing to the other singers which are also great. But Arnel can hit the money notes like Steve that the others cant, But with a little cleaner sound to it. Steve is awesome but Arnel is the future and his voice is the one That'll keep Steve into retirement.
What was plainly evident Wednesday night is that with Pineda, Journey has been revitalized. the sheer pleasure of 15,000 people singing along to "Lights" & "Faithfully"

It's just amazing that they can find these guys that sound almost identical to Steve. I mean, almost exactly the same!! It's crazy. I just wish they could mend fences with Steve and get the original band back together. Everyone else is doing it, why not them??!!

Arnel got more tone and range of vocals than the others...but still they are all a good singer with powerful vocals....but in my opinion we should accepted that Arnel sings better than Steve Perry in his prime does in live performance, after listening and comparing in soo many of the live performance..

I won't rank Steve Perry because he is the touchstone, after all - but my order would be:
Arnel Pineda - I like that there's a grit in his voice; this separates him from SP and gives him a more rockandrollish aura
Steve Augeri - The closest to Perry IMHO
Deen C. - Maybe this is a bad recording, but I can totally see why Deen would prefer being on drums, something's missing...
Jeff Scott Soto - but he's not as bad here as in another video. Great singer, just not the best fit.

There really is no comparing Steve Perry to any of these other blokes. He is leagues above the rest and they're just trying to copy him. The all have great voices but Perry's is the purest and he MADE Journey. They were nothing before with Neil Schoon singing.

when i was 4-5 years old I was stuck with my cousins listening to these power ballads by Journey, Foreigner, etc. Let me tell you guys that made for sad memories and sad afternoons! I always thought these songs belonged to sleazy cabarets in the 1980's. Its a good thing I discovered Led Zepellin!! Anyway, I think Arnel P. and Steve P. are cut from the same mold. they're different from the rest but I can't say they're better. Each one of them are outstanding vocalists.

Arnel is great but I just don't think he has the same rhythm sensibilities that Steve Perry has. It's very uncommon for a great melodic singer to have great rhythm too. Steve Perry was a drummer before he became a front man. Don't get me wrong, Arnel is perfect for the part.

perry wins. helpful, the snippets of each. the realization becomes clearer. perry wins. there is footage of journey w/ robert fleishman in 1977. it is a little cringe worthy, where i would have to rank soto at times. i realize he was just filling in, but it does not feel right. perry wins. it is a bummer to fill such known shoes.

You are right about Perry being the best. SP, in his prime, could sing circles around anyone. But I say, give Arnel a chance. I saw Journey in concert back in July and Arnel jammed. You are missing out on some good music by not listening to Journey's new stuff. I don't think SP could match Arnel today. Not taking anything from SP, but his voice has aged. Not his fault obviously, but I think SP hitting the high notes days are over. I choose to embrace JOURNEY. Cheers.

The fact that Journey has used Steve Perry as the template for his replacements is the ultimate tribute Perry. Augeri was awesome. Jeff Scott was awesome. Even Dean covered admirably. Arnel carries on the (Perry) tradition beautifully. Journey (still) rocks!!!

Being a Journey fan growing up, I 2nd what rofl1011 says about Steve being the 'iconic figure' he is. However, he (steve) chose to leave Journey and do his own thing, which is his prerogative; Now, "Journey" is trying to find someone w/a similar voice, which makes sense. As for me, I think Arnel has been the best replacement for Perry and fits the band just as well as if Perry were back up front!

Perry rules. He's the original, but he's gone now. Replacing a legend is tough to do, but Arnel does the job wonderfully. If people are so foolish that they would allow their prejudices to rob them of the opportunity to enjoy Journey's music, then that is there loss.

both arnel and steve have very powerful voices...of course steve is the original while arnel is the suitable replacement..like a car machine, if the installed original part needs to be replaced, whatever thing that'll be replaced can't be called the original part already...BUT "ARNEL" is the MOST APPROPRIATE REPLACEMENT that keeps the motor running for JOURNEY...NOTE: music passes through ears not eyes...we don't need physical beauty for ears to hear..what we need is the SOUND OF THE VOICE...

Arnel looks like a kid surrounded by a bunch of older guys.
Keep in mind, all who are defending him, that Steve Perry was and in some ways still remains the iconic figure of the band. It 's just gonna take a while to get used to it. And the reason people are reacting so harshly to him is because he looks so unlike Perry. I would react the same way still if he was white, black, orange whatever. Don't make it into a race thing.

If you ask me, I think Dean sounds most like Perry, yet I still fully believe Perry was in fact the best. I'm not downplaying anyone of the other guys, it's a big thing to step up to the plate and fill Steve Perry's spot and all of them did/do a good job. It's just that there's still no voice like "The Voice," the voice of Steve Perry.

We think that everyone deserves a fair judgement. Each Journey Lead Vocalist holds an individual talent and has contributed the Journey's success overall. At present, Arnel has captivated audiences throughout the world especially in Washington,DC as we had witnessed this year. No one can replace each other due to their individually, unique vocals. Perry outshines all the others, who are trying so hard to imitate him. Soto at least had a totally different voice. None of them are bad, but Perry is on a totally different level for quality, clarity emotion and ORIGINALITY, if you know what I mean!

I've Been Listening To Journey Since Escape Hooked Me In '81, And Finally Got The Chance To See Them Here When They Played In Dublin , Ireland For The First Time, On 25th Of June 2008, And Must Say That Arnel Is The Closest Thing To Steve Perry They've Had! okay, i listened only it's pineda , perry , augerri, in that order. my personal opinion only. sad that at this day and age people still judge your ability by your looks and be vocal about it. .journey was an all white american rock band,so i understand that a lot of journey fans cannot stand let alone accept a non white frontman. i am sure before neal and jon and the rest of the management hired pineda that was discussed. but with his talent they took a chance and it paid off very well for them.

Perry's studio versions were awesome coz hiss inflections can be more clearly heard without the noise from the crowd. Hence, he can be more soulful but in a live settingt where Arnel has been singing practically his entire career day in day out he simply blows Perry away. Even the digitally remastered Perry live songs i.e. Faithfully, pale in comparison coz one key ingredient is missing and that is POWER especially in an open air arena where it is a must to stay above the instrumentals.

But Arnel can hit the money notes like Steve that the others cant, But with a little cleaner sound to it. Steve is awesome but Arnel is the future and his voice is the one That'll keep Steve into retirement.
