  • AWESOME,GREAT JOB

  • get out of town man. that was great!

  • Hi Jason,

    As usual, great job!

A small favor; an old friend and I have been trying to determine which of Bill Monroe`s recordings included Don on banjo. Do you have any idea?

    Thanks,

    Pete

  • Hi Pete. Unfortunately Don never recorded with Bill Monroe in the studio . But I do have several live recordings from his time with Bill in 1948.

  • @renopicker

Thanks Jason; at least the mystery is solved. Are copies of the recordings you have available anywhere?

    Cheers,

    Pete

  • @Wishuey

Oops. Didn`t think it had posted, ended up doing it twice. Terrible thing, old age....

  • @renopicker

Thanks Jason; at least you`ve solved the mystery.

Are copies of the recordings you have available anywhere?

    Cheers,

    Pete

  • wo!!!

    great play !!!!

  • Yes, one of may Reno favorites! Thanks for posting this. I learned it from the tab in a 1981 issue of the Banjo Newsletter, but you've got some excellent differences here. If you ever put out a follow up to your phenomenal work you previously released on Reno style, I would like to see this Maggie stuff on it. --Scott

  • Great Reno style pickin'!

  • Don lives! Makes me wonder about reincarnation....and the tiny little slip at 150 adds a bit of humanity. Except for Dixie Breakdown, which literally changed my life, this is my favorite Don Reno tune.

    Brilliantly done Jason!

  • Such an absolutely FINE performance! You are so extremely talented. Please keep up the good work for the betterment of all of us! I'd but your CD in a minute. Thank you again and again...!!

  • Great Job!

Is this an Rb-4 you are playing or is it an RB-3 with a 4 patterned neck like the one Don Played?

  • Thanks. It's a 1997 RB75 Gibson JD Crowe model. Gibson made these banjos as replicas of JD Crowe's old banjo. Luckily, JD Crowe's banjo and Don Reno's banjo are nearly identical. So I call mine a Don Reno model. Mine is made up to look like Reno's banjo during the 60's. It has a gold plated Gretsch tail piece and a gold plated top tension arm rest. It's my little homage to him. Plus it's looks cool too!

  • I kept trying to figure out whether those two pieces were gold or not! It sounds great and does look good. It looked real close to my RB-4, until I zoomed in close enough to get a good look at the headstock. Are you on the Hangout? If so, what's your username?...I'd like to add you to my friends list.

  • do you still have that rb75?

  • would yousawp that rb75 for a kel kroydon with dannick ring?

  • Thanks for the offer but this is the best sounding banjo I have ever played or heard (except for Reno's "Ol Nellie" of course!) I know that I would kick myself if I ever parted with it. But thanks for the offer.

  • thanks anyway, i believe you could make a kay sound good! if its not a secret, does it have the orginal crowe ring in it? and is it set up loose like they say to do on that banjo? and, does it have a spike or a nut on the fifth string? one more, does your rim have a serial # on the top where the ring sits on it and is that same # on your ring? sorry about all these questions.

  • Thanks! There's no secret to my banjo set up. It is pretty much a stock RB75 with the Crowe ring. The head is tuned to about a B flat. That's pretty dang tight! I also thin my bridges down. This is pretty much the same set up Reno used to use on his banjo. I write the Reno style column for Banjo Newsletter and my last column covers Reno style set up. Check it out and check out my YouTube page for links to more Reno related stuff. Thanks again and feel free to contact me any time.

  • Almost forgot about your rim question. The serial number is on the side of the rim not the top. Not sure about the ring but it is a Crowe ring. And it has a bone nut for the 5th string.

    thanks!

  • Mesmerizing! Now that I have found you I can't get enough. You make it sound like two completely different instruments! Fantastic.

  • top of the class !!

    great pickin'

well done thank you for posting

  • Jason, you never cease to amaze me. Well done!

  • This is the best I gotta get that DVD wheni it is available.

  • One I always wanted to learn the way Don did it. He would be proud. 5 stars ain't enought!

  • It's so wonderful!

  • Quality banjer pickin'! : )

  • Wow! That was so good. Thanks for keeping Don's picking style alive!

  • That was AWESOME!!!

Thanks for sharing your great talent with us!!!

    Larry.
