I wish I had seen this before I set up my first kit. It came with some of these plastic rings but I had no idea what they were good for (and no, the kit didn't come with a manual ;-)). Never in my life would I have come up with the idea that they'd make such a huge difference in sound when just put loosely on a drumhead. Found that out only later when I saw my drum teacher using them. What a revelation! Spread the word!! This needs to be part of every drumming book.
Great to shine some light on this. I've played so many studio sessions now that I don't know what I would do without the cutouts. Haha. Always keep a few on the bottom of my snare cases.
