As a former college RB, I really appreciated Garrett Wolfe's effort in this game. I got a chance to see him play against top competition. No one expected NIU to beat OSU, but this game solidified Garrett Wolfe's position as being one of the best backs in 2006 as well as one of the best mid-major backs in NCAA history.

So yes, I did notice the score, but I was mesmerized by Wolfe's abilities as a small RB. He runs with great leverage with his shoulders square to the hole. Because of this, he always falls forward when tackled. He runs downfield with great patience and sets up his blocks well. He makes every cut precisely with no wasted motion, e.g., with no unnecessary jukes that telegraph his next move. He is a two cut back, i.e., he can make two cuts in a hole and maintain speed.

I too was impressed with a lot of his runs that day and happy to see him end up on the Bears roster. Just reacting to what I feel is excessive hype over his performance in that game. I watched that entire game that day. He was the entire NIU offense which says a lot since everyone knew where the ball was going... but he also barely cracked the red zone that day when it counted most.

He lit up, what is supposed to be the best college team in the country, for 285 yards. Yeah, I'm impressed. No doubt it was a team effort, but if you get that guy a running start and just a little bit of room, look out. He'll make you look like a fool.

I am an NIU grad and Bears fan, but unlike you, I watched the game that day. Not that impressive. NIU got its azz kicked all day. Wolfe was very very good outside of the red zone, other than a single touchdown late in the 4th quarter. The red zone is that 20 yard patch of grass at each end, in case you're wondering. Also, he ran for 171 yds not 285 (to Tom).

i'm a chicago native and a big bears fan...but u cant compare this and nfl and say he should start. the nfl defense's are ALL smarter and faster than college defenses. he's got great talent but he can only run to the sidelines with open lanes, otherwise on closeline will take him down. still great in the open field though.

Have you seen the guy run? I've seen them both play. Again, I'm not trying to put Wolfe down, because I think he's a damn good running back. But just watch Slaton run- he has great burst, and he just outruns everyone on the field. Not to mention he has power, too. But he puts up great performances against some of the best teams in the country, too. He may be on a better team than Wolfe, yes- but that doesn't mean he couldn't do what Wolfe is doing.
