  • thanks for posting this video up eric! it has been very very helpful! I think i hydrolocked my 2000 Honda Prelude and Im guessing Im gonna have to take the engine out to see if my engine block is cracked or if my piston rods are broken...when i try to start the car, the engine doesnt turn over. When i try to spin the engine manually, it doesnt spin. So yeah, thanks for helping. Feel free to respond to confirm my diagnostic for my car : )

  • Hello, I just got back from autozone can anyone help me. Is this a serious problem that needs to be fix right away or can I just leave as is for now? Troubleshooting: P0135

    Definition:

aaA/F sensor 1 heater system malfunction

    Probable cause:

aa1 - Open or short circuit condition

    aa2 - Poor Electrical Connection

    aa3 - Faulty A/F sensor 1

    Please help me :/

  • Hello Eric the car guy! I have a something to ask. I have a 2007 chevy uplander with the 3900V6 and The oil smells like gas. What can cause this and is in really bad?

  • @vacuumfreak95 That means it's time to change your oil! if you change it and it still smells like gas then i would look for any kind of cracks or oil rings.

  • i see you use your impact alot, shouldnt a torque wrench be used? Im sure you have enough expierence to know how much torque the bolts at?

  • Great video Eric as usual. I've always kinda wondered, as a torque wrench kinda guy, what sort of torque does your air wrench tighten to?

  • oooh on your face hahahah classic

  • eric ur awesome love this vids, i find myself watching them often also i find your commentary great but i catch myself laughing at it, i guess its your sense of humor that is what makes me laugh.. keep up the good work oh yeah post more honda vids

  • Great video ,but i was thinking wouldn't it been easier to have flex plate end facing the other way to save having to step over legs of engine crane or keep ducking and then remove crane to fit transmission?.

Plus 100% agree on genuine parts fit and function.

  • i got one question Eric my honda has a chek ingine light and when we cheked its was a knock sencor but still haven't change it what would happen its i keep driving like this cause this mechanic we talked to he said ahh its nothin its just there.

  • I have a honda civic 1997 dx coupe (auto) and got an engine swap. I got a ZC engine, but I noticed the oil pan was made out of metal and not plastic like the old one. Does the metal oil pan use a gasket?

  • This is great, I'd watch this stuff all day! You think it's boring because you did it, and you know what's coming up. But it's a gold mine for someone like me (Learning). Thank you for sharing it free of charge. I know you are doing a great service to all the driveway mechanics out there. I fly helis too btw, or I did when I could afford it! :)

  • @maksym2k I'm glad to hear that my videos help you as that is my goal. Thanks very much for your comment.

  • wat could make my car not burn the gas n just eat it...i failed a smog test inspection do u think it will cost me a lot to fix w.e i failed n pass it?

  • @dgaleno2012 First you need to know what it failed for, normally 4 or 5 gasses are analyzed to do the test, knowing what was out of spec can give important clues as to what the problem is.

  • @EricTheCarGuy i fixed everything already thx

  • I know that you are trying to save the customer some money, but that is quickly forgotten if the repairs you just made fail because you reuse old parts. I feel that my time is more important than trying to save a couple of buck. I do enjoy your video.

  • @upallnight888 I hear you and agree but it's not my car so there is only so much that I can do, I can suggest but I can't force people to buy more stuff especially if they don't have the money. FYI it's been about a year since I did this job and it's still going strong however despite the owners neglect.

  • Also forgot to mention I have a 92 prelude dohc H23 so it should be similar I believe to this civic.

  • @nobo631 Not even close really, this Civic engine is a baby compared to that one, the H23 is almost twice it's displacement. Also working on Preludes is not like working on Civic's, Civic's are much easier, Preludes can be more of a challenge.

  • You know after watching this second video I believe I could change an engine even though I don't have much experience yet. Thanks for the great videos. Very informative and fun to watch!

  • @nobo631 I myself am a 'visual learner' and learn quite a bit by watching someone do something. Thanks for the comment.

  • Hey I really love your videos, very informational! I have a Civic and I learned a great deal of information regarding the single cam engine which you swapped!

    Thanks!

  • @gabo2212 I'm glad you liked the video, thanks very much for your comment.

  • @gabo2212 I'm glad you liked the video, thanks for the comment.

  • QZ

  • Você é foda!!

    You are "The guy"!!

    thanks a lot from Brazil!

not to replace good shaped gaskets, i'm with you!

  • @cerobsan Hello Brazil! Thanks for your comment.

  • hey eric i got a? im taking a motor out of a 95 civic lx 1.5 and ur video is very helpful but the line u put the freeon for the ac do i have to take that off and also the line for the power steering pump that covers the engine mount how do you get that line off from pump?

  • @jerseyboy8904 I might actually show that in part 1 but I don't recommend disconnecting the AC, you can remove the high pressure power steering line however.

  • i <3 u too

  • Nice video

  • @zai1ld Thank you!

  • Awesome video! You go out on a limb to please others.

And torquing to spec and replacing gaskets for exterior parts is over rated! We all know where its needed, and that's usually for the internals ;D

Also, you always say 'stay dirty', but why do you wear gloves? I'm assuming its so your hands don't slip from your tools?

  • @ZlatanTDR I started wearing gloves about 10 years ago or so and I've been using them ever since. Working at a 'luxury' car dealer and having the washroom on the other side of the shop, it was much more efficient to wear gloves and take them off than to run across the shop every time I wanted to pull a car in or out. Flat rate can be a powerful motivator.

  • Great job on teh video. I would guess for most honda/acura the basic layout for swapping the motor is teh same because i might be considering a swap from a b18b1 to a Japanese b18c R motor. would appreciate input

  • @khanster786 I've honestly never done that swap but like you say they are often similar and in my opinion Honda's are pretty easy to work on. You might consider posting this question on my forum at my website to see if anyone there has done this in the past. Good luck.

    BEST TEACHER EVERRR

    still dirty

  • @marsL001

and thats why its a atleast a 500 dollar job

  • @marsL001 Good, stay that way. :)

  • @marsL001 Thanks man, I appreciate that.

  • awsome job man

  • Eric, you are the man. These videos are inspiring me to take apart my own 97 Civic to change my broken head gasket.

  • @f5khan Go for it, it'll be fun.

  • @f5khan i did the head gasket to my cavalier and an engine swap on my camaro. no more satisfaction that doing the job yourself. i will admit that i dont know much about DOHC engines but when it comes to push-rod engines i have no problem working on them. i think i would rather work on pushrod engines anyways they are simplier

  • @ad356 Perhaps but without pushrods you loose a lot of moving parts which by design makes it a simpler set up and cheeper to make while accomplishing the same thing. Thanks for your comment.

  • Math teachers show how to do division in different ways on paper. All good until some teacher comes along telling you that you HAVE to do it a certain way.

People like doing things their way and are suited for doing it a certain way. There is no right or wrong way of doing things if the end result is the correct one.

You are the mechanic equivalent to a math genius. You have nothing to prove, the end result is still the correct one.

You just didn't need to use the "proper" tools. (paper)

  • @RealCadde Wow, high praise indeed, thanks very much for that comment.

  • no need to justify or explain yourself. you put out the best and helpful videos here on youtube (as far as car-related topics). very professional shots and clear instructions. your knowledge really shines and overpower every wannabes that pretend they know a great deal of information and leave bad comments. please continue to do great work because a lot of us are learning from you. you've just increased my knowledge about my honda. thank you.

  • @agg7 Thank you very much for that awesome comment I really appreciate it.

  • thanks mate. ;)

  • hi was looking two know why would a ball joint fall out.it has happened 2 me 2 times now a year a go it wreaked my car put me in a wall.and it happened again 2 day just by turning the full lock on then bang ball joint poped out.is it something wrong are is it just normal.

  • @l131567ab9x7y Not normal really but it sounds like cheep parts to me, you may want to consider using better parts next time. It's also a good idea to inspect your suspension for loose parts once a year.

  • This is awesome! We got a '98 Civic for our 15 year-old that going to be his first car. It's a project and needs a new engine. This is a great way to pre-view what he's getting himself into. But, it also shows it's not an overwhelming job. Thanks for this.

  • @Chandlej1 The engine is actually very manageable compared to some that I've done, remember to keep track of all the parts and fasteners and it's not a bad idea to take some pics along the way to help for reassembly in the future. Good luck.

  • hey dude got a 1.5 v tec looking two change over 2 a 16 v tec what all do i need.kinda on a buget.

  • @l131567ab9x7y Forget it if your on a budget as you probably won't be able to keep it. You will also need to swap the ECU and perhaps part of the wiring harness to make that work. Good luck.

  • hey dude got a 1.5 v tec loking 2 changee 2 a 16 v what all do i need kinda on a buet

  • wow good video dude like the detail and explaination that goes into this vid wish my school taught this way thanx for the info

  • @chevymechman91 I'm glad you liked the video, thanks very much for your comment.

  • @chevymechman91

I think the school only teaches the things in book. same in any other school for all kinds of areas , they don't really teach you the details in the real world.

    \

  • Eric , how much torque is required for impact wrench to do this kind of work?

  • @lover7411 To be honest I haven't paid too much attention to the torque ratings of my tools I just know how they feel. I wish I had a better answer for you.

  • nice

  • About the impact thing...

Hondas don't need any torque wrenches etc...

Actually Hondas are bullet proofs, and like Chuck Noris, they don't need oil to operate...

Nice job man, and great video, you are 100% right about the old used gasket, it's a budget repair, and you are not going to be paid for changing it,although the gasket is cheap. I use to re-use old gaskets, and nothing happened, I only change them, on a "clear" engine. STAY DIRTY, greetings from repairmen team in Greece.

  • @tasis2 Hello Greece! Thanks for your input and for your comment.

  • why is studying mechanics gets so hard for me? theres to much informationnn. ughhh frustrateddd

  • @PrRican973 Indeed there is but don't try to learn it all at once but rather a little at a time, be patient it does take time.

  • BRAVO SENIOR (Clap)(Clap)(Clap)

I should just drop out of my AutoTech school n stick to ur vids man.

  • @Kid20613 That's a shame as you should be getting good instruction especially since you are paying your hard earned money for it. I appreciate your comment and that you watch my vids though.

  • I fuckig love ur vida man. Thanc for all the info u put out there for free. There's a few ppl that do it the way u do and got free. I sub to u cuz u deserved it man. Hope u put out more helpful vida tanx

  • @x3jaime5x Thanks very much for the sub and the comment, glad you like the show.

  • can anyone tell me what fyi means?

  • @cagonesss For Your Information.

  • god.. stop saying that this is boring.. i'd rather watch stuff like this than all the garbage on tv =)

  • @Knaeckebrotsaege Me too, thanks for the comment.

  • Aboutv how much would you charge for a job like this, fair market price?

    Personally I've been told from $300 labour, plus $400 engine+ $150parts= $850

  • @tobysoter I don't discuss pricing of any kind sorry.

  • Where are your safety glasses?!!?! :o

  • hey eric, let me start by saying, AWESOME videos you got here, i learned A LOT from you, i have a question, whats the worst that can happen from a cracked exhaust manifold? and how do i know if its cracked or broken without having to take out the cover and the manifold? thnxs bro

  • @shishoromer You could have a buddy put a rag on the tail pipe while it's running and listen by the manifold for noise. ANY exhaust leaks before the O2 sensor will cause the mixture to be off so gas mileage will suffer would be the most notable problem not to mention the failure of an emissions test if you have them where you live.

  • @EricTheCarGuy thanks for that tip, turns out i did have a crack, but not on the manifold but on the downpipe, i have another question that came out after i saw your bleed coolant system video, first one, where is that bleed valve on a 99 corolla (the models exterior-wise is diffrent(check google for 99 corolla venezuela)) i dont remember de engine model i think its a 4A-GE but not sure its a 1.6 engine 16 valve, the other question is, if my temperature reached the red level when it overheated

  • @shishoromer Do not worry about a 'bleed valve' as they are only there to help fill the system and are not used during the bleeding process.

  • @EricTheCarGuy while it overheated, does the chamber gasket BE REPLACED or is it just maybe some air in the coolant system thats messing everything up? sorry bout the tons of questions but i just dont trust my mechanic at the toyota dealership since they've screwed me twice now and i preffer to do it by myself. thnxs in advance and keep up the good work, greetings from venezuela

  • @shishoromer Bleeding the cooling system is a good start, you can watch the video I did on Diagnosing a Cooling System Overheat for more specifics on finding a head gasket problem.

  • You are the best Bro.

  • You need a hydraulic table with a lazy susan...

  • @ratrace2p51 Yea that would be fun I suppose.

  • How much torque are you putting on those 13mm manifold bolts?

  • @ratrace2p51 Just enough.

  • So when you are reinstalling the exhaust manifold I noticed that you arent torqueing the bolts with a torque wrench. Is it not necessary to torque the bolts down? I always wondered about that.

  • @Drizzt700 I believe I covered that at the end of the video. Thanks for the comment.

  • nice video man....learn a lot from ya....

  • @alexkyaw Glad you liked it, thanks for the comment.

  • Good work Eric!! Man, u should totally do a hybrid swap!! For example a b16 in a 97 civic ex... Or even an h22 civic... Anyway great job and keep em coming!!

  • @Slam1218 I've never done one of those. Not sure how you would work the battery part as I think the hybrids have a different chassis set up.

  • Eric: you have nothing to justify. Me and a few thousand other guys are learning from you...

  • @TR4zest I wasn't trying to justify so much as save me some typing. Thanks for the comment.

  • eric...you are officially badass in my book, ive learned so much, thank you very much! stay dirty

  • @goosemonique Thank you for that I really appreciate it.

  • man that little dinky engine is a puny one vs that v8 swap you posted.. Where's the other side of the engine ? Haha.. nice video pt3 gotta heat up some pop corn and grab a good seat for the next one.

  • @mixwell1983 Well enjoy that pop corn and thanks for your comment.

  • good stuff, your the man :)

  • Thanks for uploading this! I enjoyed watchin it.

  • @HondaDNA95 Glad you liked it, thanks for the comment.

  • I like your practical approach, there's always gonna be nitpickers, but you do the work that the job warrants, I do this sort of work as an amateur and generally try to do the best job I can but if I know the person I'm doing it for has no pride in the car, probably isn't gonna keep it very long and isn't really a car person I sure as hell wont bust my balls to do a 'perfect' job for little reward

  • @Explainagainhow That was exactly where I was coming from, thanks for the comment.

  • I think ya did a great job Eric, The people out their blowing crap at you probley never changed a motor in their lives. Keep up the good work. I know you have saved me some time and money with your videos, Thanks.

  • @willibill1 Thanks for that and your comment.

  • HI ERIC GREAT VIDEO, THE ONLY THING THAT WORRIES ME IS LINING UP THE FLEX PLATE BOLT HOLES IS IT SORT OF EASY TO DO?

  • @ABCDEFIHIJK I think so, pretty straightforward really.

  • i like compact engines like the Civic i4's, honda has always been trying to find ways to make it lighter, more fuel efficient, cleaner, and quieter. you don't need a big engine inorder to go far, bigger is not always better, I like these small engines. Fuel deficient, compact, and will take you anywhere. little motorbox.

  • @EpiDemic117 I subscribe to the same philosophy for the most part but I do love old American muscle as well.

  • Do you have a Transmission Mount for a 2002 Honda Civic in your shop. that is like: shop.advanceautoparts. com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_Mount-Engine-Transmission-Anchor_20300812-P_38_R|GRPENGPAMS_1465702243____ it cost $74.99 at the store and part number is: Part No. 9204 at advance if you want to see what it look like.

  • @MileyCyrus192 I'm pretty sure I don't but check the Shop Tour video to see the stuff I have.

  • @EricTheCarGuy ok I will try and find it in there.

  • This might be personal or not...The question is what state do you live in and is it legal to buy A/C refrigerant where you live at. I need some for my truck which is illegal in Wisconsin but legal in Illinois.

  • @MileyCyrus192 My shop is in Cincinnati OH. I can buy it cause I have a license but you don't need one to buy R134a in most states. AC work requires special equipment and skills that most DIYers don't have if I'm honest, I've seen actual techs have difficulty with AC work. If you aren't familiar with what you are getting into I recommend taking it to a professional.

  • I see 1996 and up has all the same engine made. My 2002 engine is the same look and parts as the 1998 Civic.

  • @MileyCyrus192 Yea they didn't change much over the years, it's actually a very good engine in my opinion.

  • Eric, don't be hard on yourself, your doing Great!!!

  • @evilperson86u Thank you.

  • loved the vid

  • Thanks for the vid, looks good.

  • Superior tool cart management.

: ) Great video's too. Thanks for taking the time to make them!

  • @txfirehawk Thanks for taking the time to leave such a great comment.

  • those who pressed their dislike button, eat it, erik your dope!!!!!!!

  • @brian777aller Awe thanks man.

  • where did you get your valve adjustment tool? i know its a specialty tool that can't really be bought just anywhere.. :)

  • @peatear01 It's a blue point that you can get from Snap-on.

  • Nice video Eric, but we in the aircraft industry put our engines on an engine stand. It's because 1) the engines we work on are very expensive. 2) the engine doesn't spin when trying to tighten/torque bolts to spec's and 3) I've seen many of cherry pickers/hydraulic jacks loose their hydraulic and drop an engine (no good). I'm sure some of the guys (and gal's) might have a very used hydraulic stand that might need some hydraulic fluid or maintenance. Just a thought. Word for thought or not. Thax

  • @CargoInk I appreciate your input, thanks.

  • I tend to do things the same way. I even own an electric 3/8 impact for doing more fragile stuff like fasteners that butt up against plastic. Perhaps the people that complain should realize that in this industry, time = money. Time saved is money earned. If they don't like that we do what we have to do, perhaps they can petition the auto manufacturers and shops and let them know that flat rate should not be the basis on which technicians are paid.

  • @fastveedub I like the way you think. Thanks for the input and for your comment.

  • As a shop owner and tech, unless its a cylinder head, bearing caps, wheel bolts, etc..... I follow the German Torque spec rule, "Goodandtight" . Eric, your doing a great job. The only reason I make myself and my techs torque wheel bolts is to prevent brake rotor rotor wharpage.

  • @Dililis I actually did a video on torquing wheels for that very reason. I guess great minds think alike. Thanks for the comment.

  • Hey Eric...Most of us that work on cars know we don't get a torque wrench out for every little bolt or fastener. No need to defend yourself - most of the negative comments are probably from guys that haven't had to do turn a wrench for a living. I enjoy your vids and hope they keep coming!

  • @moparNcats Thank you for that I really appreciate it.

  • A friend of mine has his own transmission shop and works hard to make a living and whenever I talk about fixing cars and how I enjoy doing it, it's embarrasing.. he sees fixing cars in such a different light. I love watching the torque wrench giving me the correct number and he already knows by experience and feel when the torque is about right. I talk about a job well done, and he talks about working hard to keep his customers pleased. there's theory & practice, no need to apologize.

  • @pahriz Great point, thanks for the comment.

  • great video eric

  • great job eric nice video amigo

  • @1elAguila Gracias.

  • Great video. I look forward to these.

  • Great video (again)! No need to be defensive. We are learning from you. Note only are you showing us how professional technicians get engines installed, but your honesty in talking about working to beat the flat rate also teaches us how the industry really works too. I think your videos and other work demonstrate your generosity, skill, and integrity. You really have nothing to apologize for!

  • @DanielGMich I appreciate that very much, it seems you have a very good understanding of where I'm coming from, thanks for that too.

  • 3 dislikes Eric vid! If you want to work on car for a living, this is how it done.! Again great job Eric.

  • ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO

  • hey i watched the check engine light vid that one was good n kinda funny, but dosent show up on your list of videos when i view it on my smartphone. :( i hope you get partnership on youtube as you have one of the better channels.

  • @petergriffintubin Sometimes not all videos are available on mobile but it's also posted on iTunes if you can't find it on YT, it's under Check Engine Light Basics. I actually did get my partnership last year, thanks for your comment.

  • your videos are the bomb dude. screw all the haters. keep doing what you keep doing.

  • That 3/8 impact gun is handy!! Thanks again for the helpful video Eric.

  • Reusing an old gasket?!?! My ears aren't working properly, are they? Aren't FWD Tranny's a pain in the ass? OH! I see why you reused it. Teach that guy a lesson when his daughter breaks down. HA HA! Nice!

  • Yeah, there's nothing wrong with used parts. New parts become used the second they're bolted on, and they generally work just fine. Was this engine from carpart.com too Eric? Sucks that the oil filter is in the back on those engines. I think I'm spoiled with my Yaris engine, it takes around 5 minutes to change the oil without using a jack.

  • @stefanjellow This one was actually from Japan engines. Yea the oil filter can be a pain especially on a hot day and it just came off the highway. Thanks for the comment.

  • Thanks again for another great video.Impact tools are every great mechanics best friend.Keep up the great work, we love ya.

  • @crombieposterboy No I don't sorry. Try CarPart dot com.

  • sexy video!

  • I use my impact all the time to tighten bolts when working on my personal cars and customer cars. Have for years. What people don't realize is that most guys, ESPECIALLY guys that don't have alot of experience, will WAY over tighten bolts and not even know it while using hand tools. They just freak out when they see you using the same tool the guy at the tire shop uses to tighten the lug nuts on their car. You just have to hand start the threads and know where to set the impact. Easy stuff.

  • I like the way you comment as you work. You're not fat though.

  • @glockerotica Fatter than I used to be but I don't smoke anymore and I think that was worse. Thanks for the comment.

  • @glockerotica yeah eric your not as fat as you keep mentioning

  • i made a intake gasket out of cardbored becuase i was too cheap to pay for a new one 6 years later still going strong all you need is it to seal as long as the old gasket is intact its fine

  • @jazzy4me4eva I've used cereal boxes myself, thanks for the comment.

  • @EricTheCarGuy

    are you guys joking? lol

  • @jazzy4me4eva

Reminds me of the 1st episode of Green Acres. If you watch all three parts of the episode on YouTube Olivar makes a head gasket one of his wife's pancakes (she has an unusual way of making a short stack). Look for video NQ8SgjOa0WA on youtube.

  • Great video, Eric. I enjoyed watching this job.

  • Is that a Rolling Rock keg in the background? Wounder what that is for... Heheh!

  • @TomClancySpamProtect It was there when he moved in. He's saving it for a core resale or something.

  • @TomClancySpamProtect Everybody comments on that, it was there when I got the building I've been meaning to take it in for a core but haven't yet, not that I have ANYTHING against drinking beer just not when I'm doing car work.
