First of all the weight of the weapon. The Guan Do is probably one of the heaviest weapons out there and to be able to control such a weapon requires a certain amount of strength. Which the person in this video doesn't have. Secondly, the stances have to be perfect to allow the flow of the weapon throughout the form. Also, the Guan do utilizes elements of the four basic weapons of Shaolin (broadsword, staff, spear, double edge sword) You must master those first before moving on to the Guan do.
hmm..he knows the basic weapons, if you saw his videos. kwandao is heavy indeed but its far from a "master" weapon, flexible weapons are aways harder to handle, he is not good yet but he posted another vid in witch he has significatly improoved, soon the weight it will be no problem. i support the early training of this exacly because its heavy and requires time to be perfected and to you to get used to. when i learned this i was hopeless now i can see hope somewhere in the horizon lol :) peace
I have seen his videos..all of them..that's why I said what I said. His stances are far from perfect and close to horrible, he lacks flexibility in the joints. All his forms are like that. Simply a man going through the motions of kung fu without any real idea of what he is doing. Granted flexible weapons like the rope dart or the meteor hammer are master's weapons, but the Kwon Do also requires the same mastery over one's body. And don't worry, this guy won't be training long enough to improve.
@onemindonespirit hahaha. Don't give me that. It's far more important to practise. But if you think you're doing the right thing by defending him than by all means....tell me he doesn't need to practise; tell me you're impressed with his forms. You think he'll get better by training with a heavier weapon? Before he has even covered the basics; like look at his stances.
@keithmc1975 I don't know what he will do or will not do. Just find it interesting that you KNOW that he "won't be training long enough to improve". Way to really help a young guy. Great job. Excellent wu de.
@onemindonespirit I was not put on this earth to help people achieve their martial arts goals. And if any of my comments really discouraged him and he quits; then I guess he wasn't all that motivated in the first place; was he? Time will tell what he does; I am only guessing based on past experience with others like him. I would be surprised if he practises at all. When the coolness of Kung fu wears off he'll find something else to occupy his time.
@onemindonespirit Wonderful. A)I don't even know what Wu De is, and it seems you're in no hurry too explain so I'm guessing you don't either, or maybe you're just enjoying being so righteous. B)Obviously you've never been trained by a traditional master, because they are many things but they are rarely polite when it comes to improper stances and techniques. Would you complain to them when they showed excellent 'Wu De'?
Yes, you obviously don't know what wu de is. It shows. Clearly. My comment in you having "excellent" wu de was sarcasm, as you are showing that you have none. As for B, I'm not this person's teacher and am not going to comment on his technique, especially in an attempt to tear someone down and belittle them, as you seem at liberty to do. You are acting like just another youtube master, just another youtube expert (read: troll), hopefully at some point you will mature in your training and life.
@onemindonespirit I noticed in your little speech that you failed to provide a definition for "Wu De". Is it like a secret or something and you can't tell anyone? That's fine. Also, I have opinions on the subject; yes. But I didn't force the guy to record himself and then put that same recording on youtube for the world to see, and keep in mind that he could've disabled the comments. Did it ever occur to you that he wanted people to share their opinions of his forms?
If you would like to understand what wu de is, then rub two brain cells together and search it. Google is your friend. Or you could just ask your teacher, unless he is the one who teaches you to be this way. In any case, good luck to you, "master".
@onemindonespirit Sounds like somebody is losing their objectivity. I looked it up and now understand why you didn't want to mention anything. It's because you don't know; not really. You get the word, but not the practise. Let me ask you this: What did I say that offended you so much? The author of the video hasn't even commented on anything; does he have a thicker shell than you? Do you think your doing him a favor by just saying "Don't worry big man you'll get it if you keep training
@keithmc1975 this was used to cut horse legs off. it takes no skill originally. just a brute force weapon. and has had an art form go along with it and evolved over time. the legend is Guan Yu had a 100 pound one. wich is probably false. but actually believable. if he used one he would of rarely swung it in battle. he would dodge somones moves and then time one good blow. because the sheer weight of a weapon like that would break through a shield or any block somone tried to use and easily kill
i have always wanteds 1

Hey John! I remember that Guan Dao was super heavy. That was the one Lam Sifu made for you right?

jee if he's struggling with that weapon, imagine him trying to use them back in the day when they were heaps heavier

Don't worry big man you'll get it if you keep training that heavy weight.

The Guan Do is a master's weapon; I'm not sure why you are using it but you are not ready for it.

why is it a master's weapon?

@keithmc1975 yes, it is very important to build yourself up by tearing others down.
