We have foxes (whom we love & share our food with occasionally) and there is one currently making this sound every night, like a short howling as she or he strolls the perimeter of the territory. I assume it means, 'eff off, this place is mine' or it's a call for a mate, or both. Any answers? and which sex makes this particular sound? Re dogs chasing foxes, unless some *sshole on a horse has a pack of dogs trying to run down a fox, a fox can always outrun or outsmart a dog. Thank God for that.
Guys, he meant that the dog just wanted to chase the fox, that's not abnormal for a dog. He just phrased it weird. My dog chased foxes all the time. Doesn't mean she caught them, but still. Just putting my two cents in.
omg thank you so much we have a forest and foxs always come to our front yard and make those noises my mom thought it was a bird hahaha THANK UUUUU SOOOOOO MUCH
i don't think that was a mating call cuz there was snow and considering foxes mates in the spring or summer...btw weren't u afraid the fox would attack your cat?
@metanox99 - The kits are born in the spring, which means the foxes mate two months prior (usually March), and we still have plenty of snow then!
I wasn't worried about the cat. She is a smart one. She can take care of herself! Now it if was my other cat..... I would have been more worried. Since that time, he has disappeared. :-(
Thanks. Finally, someone who has some sense! I certainly didn't say that my dog was going to kill the fox. I wonder if I posted a video of the fox trying to get my cats if people would comment about the nasty fox that would be so awful as to eat cats!
Right, I definitely think you are a nasty person to invite the dog to kill the fox& I am not interested in communicating with you ,so this is my last comment .Any other comment you make to me will be ignored.
ahhhh! i came home this AM about 3 after a trip 2 the red sox game tonight.... and i heard this creepy noise in the woods. we went out 2 the car 2 bring the stuff in from the trip, and it sounded like it was getting closer and closer. i do have a big yard in the back, which is mainly woods, garden area, etc. I had never heard this before, so i wanted to check it out.. what we heard sounded alot like this.....! my cat was outside too.. isnt this a warning/marking territory call?
i came back from tesco about an hour ago and heard this terrible noise.me and my freind thought a girl was getin murdered im only 17 an my girl m8 is 16 we absolutly shit ourselves we ran down looking for the women while we were shouting hello trying to find her.. i phoned the police they came and said it mite be a fox and then left but iv been goin threw my hed for the past half n hour still hearin them terible screams so i checked out for fox noises and found these my mind is finally at peace
@ llilbeechie: YEAH! thats what happened with me! i heard this sound months ago, i called the cops, they arrived, and when they heard it, they DASHED to the scene!! even THEY thought it was human violence!!! it started happening the other night again when my buddy suggested the idea of a fox, so i looked up the sound of a fox, and indeed... what i heard was JUST a fox.. embarassing for me... i have to give the cops credit though we live in a philly suburb, not in any rural area
Yeh I got proper scared when I heard this for the first time! I thought a woman was being murdered or attacked so my heart was racing, it was doing it at 3am in the morning when my bedroom window was open so I was really worried lol. I heard it again a few nights later and realisted it might be a bird or something so I checked on Youtube and found out it was a fox. I thought to myself "I bet someone is going to call the police one day thinking it was a woman being attacked"
Something like this happened to me too; I heard this noise about a year ago, and the next day I was arrested for murder; I was held in a cell for three days before they let me out because of lack of evidence (also there was no body found and no missing persons reported in the area). Someone suggested to me that it might have been a fox (I live next to a fox sanctuary).
I was fired from my job, my wife left me, and all my friends and family think I'm a murderer.
@JamieSteveLee then they're not very good friends and your wife is disloyal. all this matrimony shit when we get married is a waste of time when it means nothing.
No offense, but if it was me who 'lost all this' because of a fox, i'd damn well make it clear to them that it WAS a fox. If they choose not to accept that as the truth, then i return to my point that they were NOT good companions or friends in the first place to doubt you so quickly.
thank you soo much for posting this. i hear it every spring and summer, and had no clue what it was. i called animal control but they didnt know either. it kinda sucked. lol but thank you, now i know.
this just happened to me scared the shit out of me i went outside to see if someone was dead in the street and then i saw the fox and i checked this video out to confirm it was only the fox..
this happended to me a couple of hours b4 i wrote this... i went out with my mom and i had my paintball gun... i know cant do shit, but it makes me feel better now that i know what was cuaseing that horrifying noise
I have no idea what you think it means, but it means the dog wants to be UNTIED so he can CHASE the fox. Whatever nasty thing you are thinking of to assume I am a nasty person was not what I intended. Unless.... you think that my dog chasing a fox makes me a nasty person.... then you would be right.
I hear that around our house, as we have a fox in our neighborhood. Our cats and dog don't even pay attention anymore when they hear it. That call really 'carries' at night, too. lol
They are beautiful creatures, and deserve our respect.
I heard this noise outside my house a few times before late at night. It always scared the hell out of me. I guess the more you know! thanks for posting this. Hah.
i heard this noise like 2 weeks ago outside my house at about 3am...it went on for like 2 hours. i had no idea what it was at first and scared the fucking shit out of me!!!!

Are you sure this is a mating call? I thought that too but I'm not sure. Also, foxes are related to dogs, not cats.
tigerlilx 1 year ago
@tigerlilx Yes, it's a mating call. As I posted earlier, I have heard them every year, all my life, at the same time of year. It's a mating call.
And I am aware that foxes are a type of dog, not cat. Thanks.

people are so stupid, you are not a nasty person lol my dog would probably want to be untied so she could chase that fox too.

There are foxes around all year and the only time we hear this sound is in early spring, so I'm pretty sure it's a mating call. :-)
