  • and if I want to create another DIV inside the rightBox, which position I would to be relative to rightBox how to do this? I understood that all the DIV elements are now relative to mainContent, so all Divs I will create in rightBox now it's necessary to mention positioning to absolute ?

  • I thiink you confused most people. its not that complicated to take up 10 minutes

  • Thank you you really helped me out!!!!

  • hey thanks ! nice tuts , keep up the good work , cheers

  • Contribution via constructive criticism: The content of this vid is probably valuable for a lot of budding developers like me. But it needs to be re-made with high def. The optics and the sound are terrible for me. Couldn't even bear to finish it.

  • What do I need to do to my overall container div so whatever size screen its opened in it is 100% and doesnt have scroll bars?

  • @lukezag Have you tried width: 100%;

  • @cleichty yes ive tried that, it works when i preview it on my macbook but when i try it out on my desktop i have to scroll to view it all

  • @lukezag Interesing. Do you have a link to the page?

  • Convoluted and completely unclear.

  • @Euadam Then you need to watch again. It's perfectly clear as most people commenting have stated.

  • Great job! Your video makes it crystal clear what position:relative in the parent does. This is one of the trickiest facets of CSS. Your patience in providing detailed examples is really appreciated. You went out of your way to ensure that the explanations were complete. The level of repetition was just perfect. You are a great teacher. Thanks again.

  • @clem44st Thanks for your very encouraging words! In fact, I've been contemplating doing many more training videos and your comments are assure me to continue down that path. Thank you!

  • @cleichty

I would certainly look forward to more tutorials from you :-)

  • thanks a lot mate, i finally got my head around positioning!

  • @SuperAngryHippo Glad it helped!

  • thanks for this wonderful video ! I was unsure about how relative and absolute works and the visual rep you presented helped me a great deal !

  • @RazzorBladeKiss1 Glad to know that it helped! I used to be with you in not fully grasping relative and absolute positioning, but when I learned what I showed you in this video, it finally made more sense. Have fun with it!

  • @cleichty lol i got an A+ in my Info course and this came. tanx again cheers.

  • Thank You So Much!

I just read The Missing Manuel for CSS, and it doesn't go into much detail about sidebars. But I watched this video and It cleared so many things up!

  • @DrNeonAnthrax Yeah, when I finally learned what I show in this video the positioning options started to make more sense. Glad it cleared things up for you!

  • Thanks for the nice class :-)

Curiously, I never use position relative and yet when I simply insert a div within a div - the child div seems to behave relative to the parent div - without specifying "relative" on the parent div.

In DreamWeaver, I use this behavior to move multiple child divs around by moving the parent div. All the children move in sync, relative to wherever the parent div is moved.

Haven't found a use for the "relative" spec yet?

    Love!

  • Very well explained.. thank you so much!

  • marry me...

  • I want to kiss you on both cheeks for pointing out that to relatively position a div within another div it is the PARENT that needs to be relative and the child absolute - which seems counter-intuitive to me at least.

You've just saved me a nervous breakdown! :-)

  • @lifeonanotherplanet

Thanks for the feedback! I know...when I finally realized how absolute positioning and relative positioning work together - it changed my world. It was a huge 'aha' moment for me. Thrilled to hear it saved you from a nervous breakdown!

  • So you must define the parent as a relative in order to position any of the divs within it. I think this finally makes sense. Thank you.

  • @secretMachine

Yes, you are correct! When I finally got that concept, it made a huge difference. Wish you the best in your CSS adventures!

  • Thank you, this is not an easy concept to explain but you have been --really-- really helpful by being so visual and direct in your explaination. thank you - you have explained it so I can understand it by showing the actions the AP takes when the elements change. This is not an easy concept to explain. Again thank you!

  • @arttubelady

Thanks for your comments! I am so glad to hear it was helpful. I am surprised how often I come back to this concept - relative vs absolute positioning - when I am troubleshooting css issues. Thanks for taking the time to give me feedback!

  • i see what's wrong now. this video was very helpful. thanks!

  • I have been taking div positioning lessons from every tutorial I can located on YouTube. I have only found two tutorials taught by women.

Thank you for taking the time to create this easy to understand div positioning tutorial. I have watched it a dozen times -- only today do I feel I can manipulate divs the way I want.

  • Thank you..

    This was very usefull info....

    thx

  • This vid cleared up my confusion on divs; also now understand how to center the site in a browser. Well worth the time.

  • Boring, slow, and again... boring! There are many more interresting tuts about positioning....

  • you are very confusing

  • This is a great tutorial. It starts a little slow, but stay with it. It completely explains the interlocking relationship between absolute and relative positioning.

  • amazing tutorial thanks that really helped.
