I was around at the time but don't remember this at all. It charted on the Billboard Top 40 starting April 11, 1964 and remained for 5 weeks peaking at #25. It's a terrific tune and Sound quality is phenomenal. Thanks for posting!
Pete was awesome and very ground breaking with the steel guitar very much like Les Paul was to the electric guitar.....He was a great artist, thank you for posting the song....This recording is really good, perhaps better than the original....This is great for those of us that are still around and remember the music and the man.........
@catman5169 Me too, Catman! But for me it was only for a semester at my college radio station, 1965. I wonder if anyone today would understand the expression "peg the needle" ;-) Great memories. This Pete Drake video is just beautiful!
@TwinMillMC This came out the same time The Beatles were taking the USA by storm. On top 40 radio you may hear I Want To Hold Your Hand followed by this - a very interesting mix of things at the time - I think 1964
@gnativerson It will take some time to look into. We have actually provided Pete's family with recordings long strayed from his possession, so perhaps.
I was never a fan of this 'talking' steel guitar style - but it was of its time and Pete Drake was a great steelie and producer. Thanks for posting. :-)
Did anyone know Pete Drake is from right here in Augusta, Ga.?
My Dad John Hutto knew his Brother ,William Drake, very well. As a kid I remember Dad making trade deals with William. I guess Pete had already moved to Nashville by that time.
He was a real genius inventor and great Steel player.
i just wanted to say for your superior audio track, and as you'll see by the video I sent you, I've uploaded Forever again, as well as a mash or two, which i used a short segment of your video with the old fashioned meters. thanks again
A legendary session musician of the highest order, this talking guitar was not anywhere near his capabilities , although beguiling and a fascinating sound he was a pro and had to feed his family.
Pete Drake the legend was a session player of the top order who always put the session FIRST , to make a hit record , to compliment the vocalist , he never played to promote himself unless it was his own album. Truly one of the greats .
i just blogged it in full size. the hd 22 audio on your track is beautiful. thanks, i kind of like yours better with the meters on top. did you do it on the service at the bottom of the video?
Always found Pete Drake to be a true innovator on the stee. So creative as was far ahead of the vocoder from the mid seventies. Also played straight steel extremely well.
The original video is from the 1966 Country Music movie SECOND FIDDLE TO A STEEL GUITAR, co-starring Sonny James, Left Frizzell, Minnie Pearl, Del Reeves, George Hamilton IV, Little Jimmie Dickens and many more plus Leo Gorcey and Huntz Hall reunited as The Bowery Boys. I found a DVD on the Time Life label. The movie is copyrighted 1965. According to the library of congress, copyright was renewed in 1993.
That's just ridiculous. Such an amazing video should be up here. Is it available commerically any where? Probably hard to find anyway. Everyone needs to see that video! I went to show it to someone a few weeks back and it was gone and I almost cried.
Thanks for posting this! Such a musician.
Also, those VU meters are off by a few dB ;)

I bought this tune on a Mercury/Smash Lp in 1964. It never sounded like this! Let's put all of Mr. Drake's music on CD!

"For Petes Sake" is a great cd by the master....take a listen to a piece called "Pleading"....its his best solo work i believe!

Pete Drake's ' singin' steel ' is the heart of this fine old tune: but Floyd Cramer's ' slip note ' piano sure helps!!
