Bulgakov rulz!!!!! he's just beast among writers, the BEST! and I hope hollywood will take a one very serious movie about this book, because russian version sucks, it's not as impressive as book. I had goose bumps when I was reading it, movie should be impressive and realistic as book

Well maybe Hollywood won't take better films as you say, but e.g. wolden has to be more cunning as he is in the book. This man who plays here, looks too academic and kinda duh! that's not wolden. I mean i have absolutely different thoughts about the characters, these in the movies are "weak"

These are actually quite obvious facts that can hardly be denied. However, you haven’t answered any of my questions. Please, answer them, otherwise I really doubt you’ve ever watched the second Russian version.

- Don’t worry. You are not insulting me. You have the right to like or dislike. However, knowing the Hollywood’s history of making movies based on Russian books, I am almost 100% sure they won’t produce anything closer to the book than this version.

This was in the book. It makes Woland more mysterious. At least if you read the book for the first time.

btw "Our Brand" is the name of the actual brand "НАША МАРКА". Significant thing is that wealthy foreign man has a golden cigarette case full of cheap low quality local cigarettes.

Great adaptation. Abdulov is a Genius. R.I.P.

also .. if you wanna see really great movies showing brilliant actors and true-to-life pictures of the epoch, the time.. go and watch "12 stul'ev - 12 chairs" , "brilliantovy telenok' and short films after the stories of Zoshenko. It seems in Soviet times directors and actors knew their job well!!! What happened??? where is real russian art now?

@more1and1more Good taste in music, for one (something regrettably NOT to be found in this adaptation-- the soundtrack sometimes sounds like the theme from an archaic video game). In the book Bulgakov made numerous musical references-- to operas like Faust and Aida, to classical music like Strauss, and to the jazz of his time.

There might be another book adaptation (animated, this time) with a soundtrack composed by jazz legend Tomasz Stanko, so at least there's something to look forward to.

@sampochin: By the time they had this conversation Immanuel Kant had been dead for already more than 110 years, so if we assume that professor Voland was 60 years old (in the book he actually looked even younger) it was still impossible for him to have had breakfast with Kant. That’s what astonished Berlioz.

@sampochin: As for the cigarettes, I think it was almost impossible at that time to have different brands in the Soviet Union, let alone foreign brands, so there was one unique “our brand”. Bezdomnyj deliberately chose this one in order to show his contempt for anything foreign, especially for anything German - he thought that Voland was German (there was a big hatred toward the Germans at that time in the USSR). I think they were quite fascinated by Voland’s golden cigarette case here.

- Aren’t you forgetting that these were the 30’s, not 70’s or 80’s. Those were the times when the Soviet people were quite proud of their country and anything it was producing. Note that there is no shade of irony in Bezdomny’s voice when he says “our brand” to Voland.

Even though this version's screenplay follows the book to the letter, something is missing. The book is one of the best ever written in my opinion. The film, though, hasn't managed to capture the book's very peculiar vibe. Serbian version of "The Master and Margarita" is artistically much better, in my opinion. The film was made in 1972 and directed by Aleksandar Petrovic.

This is virtually word for word as the book, but it's completely unlike the book as the humour does not come across. Woland's far too serious. Considering the book is so funny and sparkling this is a completely leaden and unimaginative version. It's a shame if some people discover 'The Master And Margarita' this way.

@Tsotne16: He is half-Georgian and half-Russian. His father is Georgian, but his mother is Russian. Plus, he was born in Moscow. He can very poorly speak Georgian with a very heavy Russian accent.

What do you mean? Voland does pronounce Russian "v" as "f" several times in this scene and sometimes uses wrong grammar.

- So, what does qualify as a foreign accent then? Once I met a foreigner - I think he was Austrian - he spoke Russian quite fluently, but he had some pronunciation problems, and they were just like Voland's ones here. Also, as far as I know, in the book he doesn't speak with an accent throughout the whole scene in the park.

@griffdog13 Yes, I am Russian and I have never wanted to belong to any other nation on earth. Its not that I am overly proud of being Russian; I just have the presence of mind to realize that each nation has its own good and bad sides. Give a second look to the positive things of your nation (there are many of them) and never regret about being American. Its good that you study a foreign language. Learning languages helps being more objective and less narrow-minded.
