  • A rare Raga very well played on the sitar. Music is certainly flowing in the veins of Anoushka Shankar, particularly in the family of Pandit Ravi Shankar..

  • Every musician has his/her own style, there's no ONE style, but as many styles as musicians.. dig with it and chose the one you like... Said that, you can't say that the Shankars are not good players... damn they're good.

  • Please, don't fight. I've heard Banerjee, and is really impressive. I don't know Vilayat Khan, but I'll search for it. And I still love Ravi Shankar sitar, cause he's the first buttefly that came to my garden. I know indian music cause of him.

I'm brazilian. If I'd fight with anyone who tells about Tom Jobim without knowing Radamés, or anyone who likes Cartola without knowing Silas de Oliveira, I'd be a sad man. But we don't need to depreciate one to apreciate another. We can hear them all.

  • @miramarcio - well said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, or the ear of the listener

  • I very much respect Ravi Shankar, but his clarity and pulling abilities are very limited. I prefer Ustad Vilayat Khan.

    /watch?v=l8-nKlJzw_Q (listen to 3:25)

  • That such different feels come from two students of the same guru (Allaudin Khan) is pretty amazing...and a testament to a great teacher. I prefer Nikhil. But I fully respect RS.

  • I hate when I post something with typos. Ugh.

  • I love this! I am obsessed with sitar music!

  • I respect Ravi Shankar, for the vast knowledge he has.

But his playing, and then of his daughter's, is nervous, very much focused on staccatos, on strong plucking. I prefer the flowing style of Nikhil Banerjee.

  • @minjoem

Those hailing R. Shankar and Anoushka WITHOUT knowing other sitar players should care about my comments.

RS is widely famous because he was the 1st Indian musician who showed the West the Indian classical music in the 60's. But that doesn't make him nor Anoushka outstanding players.

Check out Annapurna Devi & Nikhil Banerjee. Only then one can appreciate all these artists with more common sense.

"Catching a butterfly under our nose is easy, exploring the forest is less easier".

  • @shishyupal Only scientists and economists are likely to listen to music with common sense.

The rest, with the heart and soul.

    Each to his own.

    And 'less easier' sucks.

  • @NovaScotiaChick Mate, heart & soul is what's being talked about. "Each to his own" sure, but only if one has listened to others AND THEN expressed his preference. One cannot give away his heart exclusively to the first musician without hearing others. As for Pandit RS, too many have only listened to him and tagged him as THE sitar player of all times. This kind of listening leads to ignorance.

  • @NovaScotiaChick And another thing. I'm not bashing on Pandit RS. For instance, his Puriya Dhanashri in Jhaptal is still my favorite. I haven't found a better rendition on sitar until today.

  • @shishyupal I checked out Nikhil Banerjee and I did not like him as much. I will chjeck out more of his work to be sure though.

  • @shishyupal pt Pt.Budhaditya Mukherjee is the best

  • @shishyupal

Oh whoopie. What a heavy dude. The reason they are leading us to the “more” is because most westerners are out to lunch on caffeine. The west likes staccato. If you have a butterfly under your nose, you need to clean your face.

  • @minjoem What do you mean by your question?

  • @IsmailaGodHasHeard1 You have all the answers you need.

Why did you answer the question and ask me what I mean by my question later?

  • @minjoem I forget.

  • Un-be-lievable

  • I saw Anoushka and her father Ravi play live a few years ago in Toronto, must've been around 2006 or so. One of the best music performances I've seen, of any genre, ever. The music, and the way they play, it's incredible... You become so gripped watching such talented/skilled artists like them playing this beautiful instrument with a sound like no other... :)

  • very relaxing but aslo a mysterious sound. I play guitar but would love to learn the sitar. How much money does a sitar cost? The percusion really sets the sitar off.

  • @fritzy2112 The last time I checked for prices the range was from about $950 to up to $5000. They're beautiful though, worth it especially if you have the time/patience/commitment to put into learning it properly :)

  • Anushka is going to play for srilankan composer Dinesh Subasinghe

  • Beautiful.

  • yes very nice

  • absolutely beautiful

  • If you ever get a chance to see this sort of thing live, do not miss it. I have been amazed each time I have done so. I grew up on blues, jazz, classics and opera.

  • so much divinity in classical music!!awesome!!

  • I had the privilege of sitting in the front row at Ravi and Anoushka's Melbourne concert which was Ravi's farewell tour. Wonderful and inspiring to hear them playing. Happy memories. Thank you for posting this.

  • @ABanerj84 You are wrong in assuming Anoushka doesn't play alap. Listen to this in Raga Madhuvanti. This was performed in the concert in Carnegie Hall. As I rate it, this alap is the best I ever heard. Search for madhuvanti alap and play the first result.

  • @aravindh1987 An alap in our classical music does not last 10 mins. If it lasts 10 mins then it is called aochar. So she does not play alaap

  • @ABanerj84 she does play alap :') im studying this piece for music gcse at the moment so...

  • Aoushka you have read the rhythm of life! My mind is synchronized with your great rhythm of music. Be a continuous and profound source of joy to mankind.

  • I LOVE it!!!!!

Tanks you so much for posting

    LOVE

  • amazing music! always loved Ravi, but his daughter is supreme. Norah Jones is good, but nothing like this !

  • @gofuserect You're comparing Norah Jones to her sister? They were both raised in entirely two different cultures and different styles of music. Ravi Shankar didn't have anything to do with Norah's life whatsoever, that's why she dropped Shankar from her name. Anoushka was raised by Shankar and taught her the sitar and Indian culture. However, despite the rift with her father, the two sisters were still able to come together.

  • She learned from her Father Ravi Shankar. Both are very good! Beautiful!

  • ...WHAT A DREAM OF BEAUTY...WOMAN AND MUSIC...IS THERE ANYTHING BETTER IN LIFE THAN THAT? THANK YOU ANOUSHKA!!!!

  • mind you, it does go on a bit!

  • Shame we couldn't see this gorgeous one in action!!

  • hindustani classical music transcends the material world and in its vibration allows us to touch a little bit of the higher planes of vibration and Beingness.

  • indian classical music is Great)). "SAAZ MUSICALS" (indian professional musical instruments shop)

  • Hi all, what i can say Mr Ravi and Anoushka you are great SITAR player..God Blessed You..

  • Poem: A feeling of dependency, the man with the harmonica, important needle one, the remaining life, loneliness, the feeling, as the middle part of this process, mysterious puzzle, always for what you have heard a superman in contradiction of omnipotence and youthfulness,it's the flow, the pale shadow.

I'm sorry but but what in the fuck was that comment supposed to mean? It sounds like ur really drunk or something

  • @mizzkronik1 Hey scumbag you like to use the" F" word casually in public? You are suceeding in telling the world that you are a total LOW LIFE! Please learn to be a lady. You need to question your conduct. Also Marijuana is ILLEGAL. LOW LIFE people smoke drugs.

  • @koletski21

Well u my friend seem to be a very angry person , why is it that your so angry? really tho? Oh and im gonna just light up a big fat motherfucking blunt right now and i will think of you hahahahha your a sad bastard by the way ! oh and did i mention FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK & FUCK.....So ya im just gonna get on with my life and leave your sad self to be angry ...And btw jay walking is also illegal you CONFORMIST FUCKWIT... BYE NOW

  • @mizzkronik1 That's it, I'm going to tell your mother, and were going to take away your computer privileges.

  • @koletski21

Youre both imbeciles. I smoke weed and it doesn't make me a lowlife, but swearing all the time just shows you lack any proper vocabulary. Might i suggest that you do something to stimulate your minds such as learn a new language or learn about physics and put the short time your concious mind has on this earth to good use instead of being idiots on youtube and writing stupid things like what you have been doing so far.

  • @koletski21 so ignorant caffiene is more harmful than cannabis they have done tests before you should think rationaly and not be so judgemental people like that make the world a horrible place

  • @l3054 We are here trying to enjoy music and you LOW LIVES want to argue about marijuana. Pot heads are loser-scumbags end of story. It is illegal, immoral, and makes you stupid and lazy! If you'd like to meet up with me someplace where I can teach you some respect for the law let me know. I'll show you how a military man deals with slackers. Your kind are breathing my air and I don't like it!

  • @koletski21 im not gonna argue with you your obviously narrow minded and probly very very stupid im tired of people like you youve never met me so you cant call me lazy i do roofing for a living and when im not working i train and fight mma id say thats far from lazy and i have a degree in philosophy and studying for one in psychology and morals have nothing to do with weed it makes me sad that you think that way i wish i could help you but you dont wanna learn from others you just wanna judge

  • @koletski21 oh and you dont own the air noone does its for everybody

  • nice ,but ustad shahid and ustad shujaat can make me cry, smile, dreem and flay,i love sitar

  • mientras

  • Variations were played very well, but indian clasical needs more improvisation, otherwise it means you don't really get the Raag!

  • I like the way she "laughs"

  • This really put the hook in me, it gives me a sense of belonging ..... sounds weird but it makes India my home.

  • The way Anoushka looks at her fellow musicians with love and respect says as much about her as does her amazing dexterity.

  • god she is HOT!

  • simply amazing

  • beautifull

  • is this raga charukeshi for sure??

  • @asdfghjkl5poiuytrewq Yes, For sure! :)

  • @Shivacult thanks..

  • from this angle she looks like Zhang Zi Yi o_o

  • I want to marry this amazing woman my fiance is just as beautiful maybe more beautiful but she cant play the sitar in fact she cant play any of her own national music she is an moroccan arab i guess thats my loss because i can play the music of my irish culture if i have children i want them to know the music from both cultures

  • @omarshinken I feel sorry for your fiance.

Please don't marry her. I will not end well.

  • You need more practice before you play in front of the audience.

  • You need more practice.

  • @shap274 your mom needs more practice just sayin..... this is epic!!!!!!!!!!

  • As much as I hate GCSE Music, it introduced me to Anoushka Shankar and her amazing music. It's some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard.

  • I trip balls when I listen to this, maannnnn.

  • This raga is one of the most beautiful ragaas, originally from carnatic music and popularized by Ravi Shankar.

While the playing was excellent I would have preferred more time spent on the alap and a steady buildup towards the rythmic part.

Its such a turn off that she jumps so quickly to a "jhor" speed. Just doesnt help in developing he mood and makes this a very light performance.

Maybe that was the intention, I am not sure what the context of this recording was.

  • For fear of being disappointed, I never listened to Anoushka until today. After so many years of raving about Ravi, I honestly thought I would not be impressed, possibly not even like what she did. But boy, can she play! It is amazing to watch her. She definitely has her own sound, passion and greatness. Always good to be pleasantly surprised!

  • I don't understand how anything negative can be brought up in here. Every thread it seems there is someone bringing their negativity. We just want to hear music. Go away or evolve into already.

  • Pure bliss.

  • @wasteyelo bro you're at stalker status. Yeah she's hot but I've seen hotter. She's talented and should make an electric sitar so I can headbang to it

  • @Hanginskeleton Dear Lord.. Headbang to sitar? Have you been headbanging your cranium against a wall? An Electric Sitar would be an amazing creation, however. With right pedals and effects it could be psychedelic and magnificent. But, it is already that in a whole.

Rethink your thought there, however. Sitar would not pair so well with chaotic screaming lyrics.

  • @hobosandbuttmonkeys I disagree :) Listen to the song "Shemhamforash" by the band Behemoth. Simply synergistically seductive...

  • This piece of music is stunning. I adore it but, there is one thing that eclipses it and that is the physical beauty of Anoushka herself. It's enough to knock a man off his feet. In fact, it has.

  • @wasteyelo1 well said

but if physical beauty overwhelms music then maybe there is something lacking in music ?

  • @ABanerj84

Oh shut up you unromantic so and so..

Unless you can hear something lacking in it in which case make your case!

  • @candisuxxgood i can tell you what is lacking. A strong soul stirring alaap, which I have never heard from Anoushka.

  • @ABanerj84

    Fair one!

I probably agree although I've no idea what one is...

I just was getting this kind of beat/ music in my head and found myself here through You Tube..;... dunno why;...

I don't care who plays what or what they look like to be honest..... can you recommend some "soul stirring" music to me please?

  • @candisuxxgood sure why not

search for Ustad Vilayat Khan - Rageshree Alap - Part 1

and listen to all 5 parts.

  • nothing compares to the power of music, its touching you but its untouchable, its soul without a body and it can touch a soul like no other kind of art. expecally this kind of music... irresistable

people that are not interested in music must be dead on the inside

  • this is a really brilliant work... one of the finest ones..... i just love it... thank u very much for these types of uploads.

  • so beautiful

  • wonderful, and much prettier than her father in looks... both great musicians.1st class ta4 posting.much love. Hari Om.

  • Charukeshi = 4 corners?

  • @karz12, good guess, "char" is 4 in Hindi (derived from Persian I guess), but Charukeshi is Sanskrit not Hindi. The individual words in the compound are charu+keshi

    Charu = beautiful

    keshi = hair (f)

  • @srkris hmm good to know

so keshi means hair, but did you put a (f) to denote that it is a feminine word. There are feminine and masculine words in Sanskrit? Does Hindi have feminine and masculine words?

  • @karz12

Yes kesha is masc, keshi is fem.

Nouns can be masculine, feminine or neuter in Sanskrit (same as in Avestan and Old Persian which are evolved from the same source "Indo-Iranian") although I think modern Persian has lost genders.

In Hindi, there are no neuter nouns, but masc vs fem exists.

  • The inflection, the touch Ravi's touch Physiology? She never drives by. I leave the door cracked a little , the flowers are in the bowl. She is not coming1 She has been here, she is spoiled and willful She leaves , I am sad. i miss her.. this is what I hear.

    Mwaauh

  • @anandanaga999 You semm afflicted by that which plagued Krishna , that being his Love for Radha

  • shaandaar prastuti di hai ,badhai

achchi kavitaon ke saath sayojan ke prayog hona chahiye.

  • Anoushka certainly has a legacy to live up to, i have heard many recordings of her and have attended many of her concerts and at this point in life, her performing content is alright, but one more aspect that would make it better is adding bhav or depth into her music. This bhav can be of spiritualism as well as aesthetics in playing which she needs to develop to excell and reach her father's status. This is the difference between young and amatuer musicians and legends

  • we gotta get Anoushka and Norah together for a concert someday !

  • HEY BABE

  • LIGHT!

  • Sublime..

  • An Anoushka assault to all the senses . . . go for it America ... she is all yours!

  • ANOUSHKA :D

  • NICE STYLE....I DIG HER ..VERY NICE AND DIFFERENT FROM HER DAD ..

  • Lie back and listen!

  • Fantastic music!!!

  • Indian raga music goes round in circles, building up to a spiritual experience... western classical music tends to be linear also building to a spiritual experience...

  • I know this may sound stupid, I've only just discovered Sitar music - is Anoushka Shankar Ravi Shankars daughter??

  • @Badsellcut yes she is, and trained by him in the classical Indian tradition. Nora Jones in USA is his other daughter - totally other music tradition

  • @Badsellcut yes she is.

  • @Badsellcut ....Yes and sshe was educated in England....Kindly yours.......JorgeLuisGoluboff

  • @Badsellcut ....Yes and she was educated in England....Kindly yours.......JorgeLuisGoluboff

  • If Mozart goes to India, he has to start from nursery.

  • blessings upon her and the uploader

  • This music is much older, and more advanced than what the average listener is exposed to. It almost has a mathematical bearing, but not like the sewing machine precision of German music. It has feeling. The only music comparable is the Spanish Dance. Listen, and you will see the correlation. Variable times, feelings.

  • this is incredibly peaceful. She is reviving souls with her music.

  • she is in my village next week and i build the stage for her ;-)

Will be lots of work -.-"

  • <3<3 love

  • What I found, as a musician, funny and interesting about indian classical is that I don't get it all. It is something beyond me. That makes me want to explore its very depths and learn where its absolute beauty lies.

  • @Raekzo To a large extent, most lovers of Indian classical music including the

arists who perform would share your sentiments. I once herad an artist on a TV show mention that this music is a strange well that does not seem to have

an end. The more you try to fathom its depth, the deeper it gets.

  • WErchna!!!

  • the musician and her music are equally gorgeous

  • great music & great musician !

  • 2:04....

  • real gone.. old style..

  • Thank you for posting this. I like your name - vietbongmusic hehe

  • sending a message of love to the great teacher, ravi shankar

  • Great, great....Makes me want to go to India right now and meditate on a Goa beach... I was at a concert with her on Roskilde Festival in Denmark `07, just wonderful.

  • Goa beach? You get drugs freely ... :P

  • There is more to music than "virtuosity". Your comments reveal that you are both musically shallow and naive on the whole notion of fame. And a hater. Grow up.

  • Too true!

  • what did he say man? who did he hate?

anyway it seems he said something bad and u said it well.

  • @PirateBooty68 shut the h--l up

  • @rondogon48 Excuse me? Care to elaborate?

  • @PirateBooty68 im very sorry for that.it sounded like you were insulting her music. i really like the music.its very relaxing.again im sorry for ofending you .

  • @rondogon48 Understood, no harm done. Thank you.

  • @rondogon48 Since you don't wish to elaborate let me just say that if I wish to defend Ms Shankar from people bad mouthing her talent and the musical taste of those that love her music, both of which were insulted by an individual, I will, and you can take your own advice.

  • @PirateBooty68

Friend, be more compassionate to music lover if he feel like that - wonderful! Think what Anushka could play at the old age?

  • @HATHI01 I was defending Miss Shankar from someone who was insulting her music ability. He has since taken his comments down.

  • Thanks good you take care our souls sending us on these special meetings with for instance now ..Anoushka and Ravi Shankar .... love u both

  • it's so hard to comment...i just can say Ravi Shankar is an expremely great music Guru, and you can tell by hearing his students... God bless him

  • Just Brilliant. She is young. Hope she does better in the future. God bless her. Yeah damn agree. She's hot !!!

  • Comment removed

  • Indeed... a great musician...

    .. and, I agree with paulxexwog ...

    incredibly beautiful !!!! A cat ... wow

  • Absolutely Majestic!

  • she is not only a wonderful singer and musician but also incredibly beautiful

  • I like this one slow and contemplative. Exactly like her father's style.

  • I have been listening to Ravi Shankar since I was 14 or 15, so around 32 years now. Discovering Anoushka is one of the great events of my life. She's a beautiful girl who plays beautiful music from a beautiful soul. We need a lot more like her. Human existence has been compromised over several centuries. People like Anoushka are working to restore it. Play on, Sweetheart. Play on.

  • @gldhntr

can i have some of your "stuff"?

  • @gldhntr Ditto for me on how long I have been exposed to Shankar. Anoushka is incredible and so lovely. Watching her do The Inner Light on the Concert For George was magic for me to watch and was really a highlight of a great show.

  • @gldhntr havoila bien dit tres bien , beau discours , et que ceux qui ne sont pas sensible , et ben ne sont pas sensible , !!!,

  • @gldhntr very well said i agree

  • For me ,as an European this music is special. Cant say is nice or not well done or not..this music maks me go deep down into a lovely meditation. Thanks good you take care our souls sending us on these special meetings with for instance now ..Anoushka and Ravi Shankar ....
