Freddie Mercury and his voice definitely had a very masculine power that totally transcended homo/bi/hetero lines.
I lived and taught English in Moscow back in the '90s, and though Russian culture and popular media tended to be VERY homophobic, they totally worshiped "Freddy Mair-Koo-Ree" and didn't give a damn that he liked dick and died from AIDS. (Nor did it matter if they could understand a word of what he was singing -- it was about his voice, along with Queen's overall awesomeness.)
