  • Ironic that the insect with the name "Emperor Scorpion" is kept as a pet.

  • AOUCH! :o

  • I would come with some DDT to that exhibition and exterminate all those nasty ugly looking creatures!

  • holding that is a definite no no for me

  • I think most poeple at the show felt the same way! XD

  • i was watching minecraft videos how the fuck did i get here

  • @magikkar2nd i was watching porn

  • so wenever my punk ass scorpion decides to be a bitch again and hide all up some where in my room, ill just pull out the blsck light :)

  • I tihnk that's a preferable way to find it, instead of stepping on it with bare feet! XD

  • awesome vid! I used 2 watch ken the bug guy but its not on demand anymore and I dont know what channel its on:(

  • I've seen a couple of shows on Discovery Channel - one was called "Buggin' with Ruud", but I don't think I've ever seen Ken the Bug Guy on any cable to network channels... do let me know if you find out! =)

  • @jcmegabyte its on the science channel on demand when its there at all.but at the beginning of this it has its website.it might say what channel its on there:)

  • it attack?

  • They usually don't if you treat them with respect... :-)

  • Thumbs up if you thought he glowed when you clicked this video!

  • I recently purchased an Emperor Scorpion. I am concerned if the tank I bought is not large enough. Right now my scorpion is only about 3-4 inches in length. I have a 4 gallon plastic critter tank which seems like enough room because he's so small. Every night though he walks the border of the tank trying to climb up. I'm not sure what he wants. I feed him every other day and spray his tank a couple of times a day. He has heat as well. I will get him a 10 gal but does this seem ok for now?

  • They shouldn't need anything huge to live it, but it would be "nicer" for your scorpion to be less confined. They also like things to hide in and under, so put some tunnel and cave kinds of objects inside for him to hide in. Keep the heat source off to one side so he can move to a cooler palce if he needs to. Most importantly keep the cage clean and don't allow any condensation to happen. :-)

  • @jcmegabyte thanks buddy. I'm very proud of him. Today he caught his first cricket since I had him. The others I hand fed him but I thought maybe by letting him catch it himself this may relieve some of that "must get out" tendencies he has. How often do you recommend cleaning it out? I heard every couple of months if you can scoop out the poop here and there.

  • Odds are good that your scorpion will do just fine, so long as condensation, mold/mildew, etc. is not present. Excessive moisture can encourage disease, fungus and other issues, so a dry environment is usually best, but you should definitely research the species you have to find any specific needs it may have. The level of cleanliness is really more for your benefit than the scorpion's... A clean cage looks and smells better for everyone nearby! :-)

  • @jcmegabyte Thanks a lot. I have one more question for you. Is it normal for an emperor scorpion to turn down food? Since I have had him he has taken food but today he seemed uninterested in the cricket I tried to give him. I have only had him for a week and half or so and I am new to the arachnid family. Thanks again for answering my questions.

  • I would guess it's possible for the scorpion to gets its fill of food, and simply might not be hungry at the moment. It may also not want to eat if it is about to molt. Many animals (including snakes) stop eating and may even regurgitate their last meal prior to molting. I wouldn't be concerned about it unless it won't eat for a week or longer. You might also want to ask someone who's more familiar with them than I am :-)

  • @jcmegabyte ok, thanks for all the help :)

  • Dont they sting.

  • They do, if they feel threatened, but as I understand it, only rarely.

  • @jcmegabyte Yeah from what I hear it's a last resort kind of thing really. Even when I feed mine they tend to just crush their prey then eat, stinging only happens if large(ish) prey as may be difficult to subdue with pincers alone etc. From occasional handling I have never been pincered or stung by any of my scorpions and never bit by any lizards, tarantulas or snakes.

  • scorpions just look bad as hell.

Its too bad there's a power rock band that bears the name..

  • There really doesn't seem to be anything friendly about them - claws, stinger, armor... and it would be difficult for anyone bearing the name to live up to it! XD

  • Its scorpion!!! GET OVER HERE! :D

  • I definitely wouldn't want to have mortal kombat round with a human-sized one of THESE guys! :-O

  • that is so cool man!!.. does he have a name?

    xD

  • Probably does, but whatever it is I'd put a "Mr." in front of it to show respect! XD Thanks for stopping by =)

  • are they poisonous?

  • They are to some degree, although not deadly unless you happen to be extremely allergic to the venom. Getting stung by one of these has been compared to a bee sting on steriods.. not horrible, but not fun either! XD

  • If you pore alcohol on them they will sting themselves to death. It's pretty horrific. o.o

  • I have never heard of that before... Sounds like a bad way to go! XD

  • @jcmegabyte

unless it was a russian scorpion

  • @ItsKimYo

From what I understand, that's actually just a myth.

  • most scorpions that i know of wont just suddently sting you, you have to threaten them by either hovering your hand over them or just start poking them. usually i just lay one hand down and slightly nudge it onto my hand. it usually will just get on and start crawling around my hand and arm. had one for over 2 years and never got stung once, chased friends with her too lol. now i have 3. 2 little ones and i think the big one is pregnant. but not to sure. think maybe she just is well fed lol

  • Yea - one usually does have to threaten them in order to get bitten or stung... Otherwise, they probably see something as large as a human being as just another rock, tree or ground on which to crawl... and why should they bite or sting the thing they're standing one? XD They do get used to movement as well, so long as it's not hurting them.

  • that scorpion must pack a lode of shit!

  • dont they sting you?

  • I'm sure they will if you give them a reason and an opportunity! XD These guys really know how to handle them, and rarely get stung. :-)

  • I feel sorry for the scorpions with a bright ass light pointing at them and shoved into a lil can

  • EEEEeeeeWWWWwwwwww and I dont EeeeWwww easy ;)

  • Not exactly cute and cuddly! XD Thanks for stopping by =)

  • I used to know why they glowed but I forgot something about there exoskeletons capturing the uv light

  • *Why* they glow is still not fully understood, but *how* they do it is interesting... it involves molecules in the exskeleton which lower the frequency of the invisible UV light wavelengths down into the visible light spectrum which we can see, as they are reflected off of the scorpion. I placed a link in the vid details to a cool article which explains it much better. Cheers! :-)

  • i got this creepy ad about a toung scrubber and there was this guy with big ears and they wereattached to low to his face and he had a lasy eye and then he ate a sandwich in the middle of the ad, then he danced! he was also fat and ugly

  • I've seen some pretty strange ads but it sounds like THAT one would top the list! XD

  • Scorpions at an insect fair? Got that one wrong. Scorpions are arachnids, not insects.

  • It was definitely an odd mix - far more than just an insect show... There were arachnids, reptiles, bats, fish... plenty to see and do! =)

  • i know why their glowing because of their venom just a guest : P

  • I was thinking that maybe they hang around nuclear power plants too much! XD

  • uhhhhhh, u =brave, me= I AINT RISKING IT, IM CHICKEN

  • The guy that was handling this scorpion really seemed to know what he was doing, but I think I would be a bit wary of it too! XD

  • im surprised that the scorpion didnt sting you

  • The guy did seem to know what he was doing - picking it up by the stinger and all... Syill, I think he does get stung every now and then! :-O

  • They are cool, arent they?

  • I think so :-) Thanks for stopping by!

  • Yeah, I prefer a pet that can't kill me 30 times over by accident. ^.^;; Still, very cool.

  • Fortunately these can't kill people (unless one had a rare extreme allergy to them) but they do have a nasty sting and aren't exactly cuddly like say, a puppy :-)

  • @Animebeaan their sting is only about 3 times a bee sting.

  • persseus hit the dislike button twice..

  • i love scorpions! :) i just got a new Emperor today!

  • Congrats - I hope it stays healthy and long-lived :-)

  • i want to get one but im not sure wit witch is good this one or desert thanks

  • i have it on my hand its a tattoo

  • I love Scorpios but not scorpions lol. I don't think I've ever seen one that big before.

  • These come from Africa, so it's unlikely you'd run into any this big in the US, except at a pet store or maybe if a neighbor's pet got away! XD

  • @KMTDoll Asian Forest Scorpions get about 2/2.5 inches bigger than this!

  • Why do they put blue light on them?

  • The light he's using is actually an Ultra-Violet light source, which human eyes normally can't see. In this case, the Scorpion's exoskeleton is fluorescent, and glows at a lower frequency under the UV light, making that blue-purple color. Some people actually hunt for scorpions out in the desert with UV lights, which makes them glow brightly and really easy to find! :-)

  • did he cum all over that poor scorpion ? D:

  • Everyone says Emperor Scorpions are docile. I guess mine just doesn't like me. He attacks me whenever I'm in read, be it feeding him or moistening his substrate. I'd NEVER try to handle him.

  • I don't think they're naturally docile, but they might get used to being handled after a while and seem that way. Still, I'd be pretty careful with them! XD

  • this thing is suppose to be aggresive

  • the bigger you are, the better yo're off. The smaller..... don't keep it to yourself.

  • izzit real?

    \

  • Yes - the Emperor Scorpion you see here is real... they sell them as pets at the bug show! :-)

  • damm that guy is lucky the scorpion didnt sting him otherwise he would be dead but yikeswhat dumbass whould have1 as a pet

  • OMG i liked the video but the ad that popped up under it was terminix LOL coincidence, or subliminal?

    -Jo and Dan

  • Sometimes the ads are just poetically ironic, aren't they? Hahaha XD Gotta love Google! Thanks for watching and commenting :-)

  • @jcmegabyte what is the name of the music in the background?

  • That's one of my older tunes, called "Tech Know" from the Silicon Landscape CD. Although the link on the Technician website is hosed right now, it's still a free download on the Australian MP3 site (MP3 D0T C0M D0T AU)... just look under artist "Technician" there for all the available free stuff. :-) Cheers!

  • @jcmegabyte k thanks!

  • WOW! those things are HUGE! now im kinda scared of going outside. Cause some poisonis spider jumped in my hair and i screamed when i got inside after feeding my cat XP

  • Now THAT would be much scarier than a pet scorpion! Glad you survived it! :-O

  • @jcmegabyte me too! xD

  • Ken's the best!

unfortunately I live in Canada,he only ships to the U.S ='(

  • Maybe you can come see him in person at the bug show this weekend (I know, that would be a LOT of travel, but people do come from Canada to attend this show!) If not, hopefully there will be more video to come, if I can get away from my exhibit long enough to do some more filming :-)

  • @jcmegabyte Mind if I ask where exactly this is? I'd love to go, but this weekend is terrible for me, depending on the location of course!

  • @thundertydus

FAIL, Los Angeles, sorry, I unfortunately can't go, as I'm still a student, but summer has unlimited possibilities!

  • Yea, I figured it might be a little out of your range, but you never know! There are other bug fairs at other times of year in this area, but the LANHM fair is said to be the biggest in the country so this is definitely the one to see.

  • hey whats my names David and i love arachnids but ive only had spiders and i just got a scorpion and was wondering what kind of light do you use to get that glow? mine just turns green

  • The guy demostrating the cool blue fluorescent glow on the scorpion was using a generic battery-powered black light. I believe they make them in LED types now too. Different species of scorpion will probably glow different colors too... I've seen light green, greenish-yellow, cream-white... and there are probably more.

  • oh cool thanx man

  • Do emperor scorpions bite? are they poisonous? Sorry, I'm not really into bugs or insects..lol

  • I'm not much of a scorpion expert myself, but I hear that they can pinch pretty good with their claws, and their sting is painful though not usually life-threatening or dangerous, unless one is really allergic to the venom. Many people keep them as pets and handle them too. =)

  • Depends on the scorpion, P.Imperators (Emperor) have a worse pinch than a sting. Rule of thumb would be the bigger the claws, the less hassle you'll get from the sting. If you had a scorpion with tiny pincers it would be more inclined to sting. As far as venom is concerned, Emp's could be compared to a bee but some scorpions could give you really bad cramps or even put you in a coma. Research before you buy and as long as you treat them with respect and don't do anything stupid you'll be fine!

  • Great info - thanks! =)

  • @itsBentoBox

some are dont know the names though

  • @itsBentoBox yes yes and yes

  • Haha, my pet likes rolling a marble around and exploring. She's full of energy!

  • Really? I would not have expected that from a Scorpion! :-)

  • She likes fuzzy craft balls ("pom-pons") better, though. She somehow managed to balance one on top of her toilet paper roll cave xD

(I frustrated myself for a full 10 minutes trying to do the same thing, and just couldn't :P)

  • How funny -

    Insect:1

    Human:0

Who would have though it? Bugs really do some amazing things sometimes. :-)

  • Yep, but I think you mean arachnid :P

  • Can't u milk them so they don't have poision

  • I suppose you could remove most/some of the poison by milking/squeezing, or even remove the sac altogether surgically, but I don't think the scorpion would like either option! XD

  • Nice

  • Ken put on a great show with these critters! :-)

  • Why do the glow under UV? Any evolutionary reason?

  • Now that's a very good question. While I don't know for sure, I can think of a few possibilities... Many insects and perhaps other animals can see UV light, and the UV fluorescence may be a warning to predators, a lure to prey or maybe even a color scheme to attract a mate.

Perhaps one of our viewers who is more familiar with these critters can tell us...

  • Hm. I spelled "they" wrong. Or is it "wrongly"?

  • @tsbertalan

    wrong.

  • Wrong, although you would usually say wrongly in an action form, spelling is different because just think of it as bad or badly, he spelled "they" badly? It doesnt' sound right, it makes you think more of how he wrote it that was bad rather than spell.

  • Emperor scorpions always seem suprisingly calm.

But then they sting you, which hurts, but you also feel bad because you think you must have hurt or upset it for it to sting you.

  • I have never handled one, but they do seem surprising calm, so long as you handle them carefully. It's also interesting to see that the handlers pick them up by the tail/stinger. Thanks for watching and commenting =)

  • @jcmegabyte

Yeah, I don't think I could pick one up like that >.>.

I don't own one, but an old friend had one and to handle it I let it walk onto my hand of its own accord and I didn't really pick it up, just let it walk over my hands. I think it stung me because I was shaking a bit but I still felt guilty.

Felt like holding a delicate piece of china or something. They're like art that you feed XD.

  • wouldn't want to find one of those crawling around in the bathroom :-)

  • If you do, you can sell it! XD They were getting 10 bucks for them at the bug show! :-)

  • hey if I found something like that I'd GIVE it away LOL

  • when is this ?

  • The next LANHM insect fair will be on May 15th and 16th, 2010, according to the Museum's website. :-)

  • where else can i catch this insect thingy..? i live in LA county!:)

  • The LANHM show is said to be the biggest in the country, and it only happens one weekend per year. I hear that there are other shows/fairs around southern CA, but they are smaller and I have never been to any of them.

You might be able to find some more info by googling "Southern CA insect show" or similar...

  • you like these kinda things huh?

    i like how it glows

    :)

  • Many of the bugs and critter at this show were a trippy and interesting. I like he handled the bug so easily by the stinger, and the bug didn't seem to mind either! :-)

  • Small scorpions are like human babies, small but dreadful!

  • ...especially when they're screaming in restaurants! I had that happen just last night. Dreadful indeed! :-[

  • i went there!!!! did you see zozo, one of the guys selling insects

  • I don't recognize the name, but I probably did see the exhibit. I would have liked to spend more time exploring the show but I had to tend to my own exhibit.

  • it hauls

  • i saw you at the bug fair i got a mexain red rumb and a scorpions

  • Cool! Yea - I was right across from Ken The Bug Guy on the end of the row. They had some really cool stuff there - I wish I had more time to film their stuff but I was so busy with my own exhibit. :-)

  • usually the smaller the scorpion the stronger the venom is

  • I've heard of that before, and it seems to be the case with many other venomous animals too - big is scary-looking but it's the smaller ones that really gitcha! :-O

  • I think it's the same with most arachnids too. The huge beyond reason Bird eating spider will give you a nasty nip, that'll swell for a while, whereas the miniscule black widow will kill you with just a tiny administration of it's poison XD

    Crap I hate spiders ;___;

  • no kidding ha ha

  • Does the emperoer scorpion tend to have the most poisoon than the littler ones?

  • I'm not entirely sure, being more of a butterfly and moth guy, myself. However, I would expect that being such a large scorpion that they would have a LOT of venom, but I suspect that there are smaller scorps with more potent venom than these. It would be an interesting subject to research. =)

  • When dealing with scorpions, the larger the pincers the less potent it will be. The pincers will be used for grabbing/crushing. Hince, the smaller the pincers the more deadly it is.

  • or the scorpion could just be a crap and have weak venom and pincers! LOL

  • lol, that would be the looser scorpian

  • Emperor Scorpions have a sting about as lethal as a Hornet or Wasp sting, nothing serious enless you are allergic to those.

  • I Have 3. and Yeah the sting isnt bad but You feel it. lol

  • no little ones have the dedliest venum. they needed it coz of their size

  • it's very cool...

    it wont sting... right?

  • Well, actually they DO sting, but if you're careful with them and do anything to scare them you're not very likely to get stung. Note that the guy picked it up by the stinger nodule so it couldn't get him! :-O

  • wow... bug expert...

  • gross!

  • I was at that bug fair and i saw you I got a scopren and a trntula

  • That was a great show! I hope you're enoying your bugs! :-)

  • eeek

  • Don't you love the way it was crawling all over his shirt and then he picked it up by the stinger? Yep - that was quite the show for us but everyday stuff to him! XD

  • LOL I'm sorry--I love all of God's creatures, but I'm going to have to stick with kitties and dogs :-)

  • Yea, they're not exactly fluffy and cute are they? Hahahaha XD

    Thanks for stopping by! :-)

  • Nicely put. Good sentiment.

And two bonus points for looking at the video dispite your misgivings !!!

  • @NewOrleansWoman I so agree with you! Lol!

  • @NewOrleansWoman I understand u completely, but u should really try gettin a scorpion or a snake, im gettin a snake soon, and im gonna get a scorpion as soon as possible.. they are pretty cool :D but hey i respect your oppinion, but give em chance :D they look worse than they are

  • what a beautiful creature, thanks for showing this

  • My pleasure - thanks for watching! :-)

  • I first saw this a few years ago at a reptile show. Soo cool! I love emperor scorpions. I got to hold one at a gator show once. They're even in that new game I'm playing, but they are giants.

  • I first saw these about 25 years ago - a friend brought one home from a pet store, and we watched him eat crickets for lunch... brutal show with those claws and stinger - probably a lot like the game you're playing!!

  • Oh yes, I love that the animators researched animals and got the motions right. They they aren't stinging you then they snip you with theirclaws and wittle your health down. I always loved how the real ones turn blue. I love that color.

  • Really big, but very beautiful and fascinating.

  • I especially liked the blue/purple glow under the UV light. I was surprised that such a dark-colored bug could glow so brightly like that! Thanks for watching :-)

  • Yikes! *****

  • yup - definitely scary looking! :-)

  • Thanks for making me aware that insect fairs exist. I'll have to check out one now! Cool scorpions -- thanks for posting

  • As I understand it, this is the largest insect fair int he country (14,000+ attendees this year!) but there are many other smaller ones, in CA and other states. You can probably get a roster or post a list req on INSECTNETdotCOM's forums or other bug-lovers newsgroups to find out about others.. :-)

  • One of those scorpions would be perfect for my UV light demonstration in my Chem class. Is there a way that I could borrow one from a pet store or something? Or where could I even get them? o.o

  • You may be able to find Emperor Scorpions at some pet stores which sell reptiles and such. I believe the guys at KENTHEBUGGUYdotCOM also ship insects, so check out their website. I think dead scorpions will also fluoresce under UV, so you may be able to buy a dead/mounted specimen for your demo as well. You might want look around at and/or post a request on INSECTNETdotCOM too :-)

  • Whoah! They are really big!!!

  • They sure are - but there are actually larger ones than this! Thanks for watchingand commenting :-)

  • Ottimo 5*****

  • Thanks so much for the view and star! =)

  • All your videos are excellent and very interesting, good job

    Rick

  • Thanks so much for the great comment, Rick! :-)

  • Oh cool. I was there at the San Francisco Bay Area Tarantula Society table. Nice video.

  • I wanted to get demonstrations/videos of all the cool exhibits but I was too busy with my own displays to get away for more than a few minutes, and most of THAT time was during setup when most of the cool stuff wasn't out on the tables yet! Oh well, I DID get a few minutes-worth... More to come! :-)
