There is another ship you cannot see in the video, it was determined the placement of that ship caused an artificial reference point that made the pilot believe he was at a higher altitude. All of those who lost their lives were recovered afterwards.
There were 18 Marines on board, 11 of them were able to get out quickly.. since they were already prepared to disembark. The other seven weren't so lucky.. may they rest in peace.
The chopper sinks at the rate of 20 ft per second...it has no bouyancy. They went straight down with it and were not recovered. That wheel got hooked into the netting and was a sad accident.

If you look closely, one of the landing gear hooked into the netting at the stern of the ship. When the pilot tried to abort his landing and back off, the entangled gear simply flipped the chopper over into the water.

as much as i love the idea, you cant blame that on American incompetence.
landing that would be very hard, its a small pad on a moving ship and a chinook is not the most easy to fly chopper
