theres no question that this guy was the greatest ever but why the fuck was he so angry all the time? lol! he makes after a great save, he would shout the head off his team mates
@Mac2point1 thats what made him good. He was bollocking the defence for letting them get a shot in. I was at OT one game, he called Steve Bruce a 'Fat basterd' was hillarious.
doesn't make any difference which one was best out of Schmeichel v Rapid or Banks v Brazil as Seaman v Sheff Utd beats them both hands down. Schmeichel was my hero growing up as well
It was a great save by Banksy, don't get me wrong, but he was out of position. If he was in the middle of his goal, not the front post he could have simply came out and claimed the cross.
@theDLproject95 I think that's a bit harsh though. The game has evolved quite a bit since then, and Banks was probably doing what all keepers did at that time (but other keepers would've let that in).
both are great saves but my favourite save is Jerzy Dudek's versus AC Milan in the final of 2005 champions league. It isn't the best save but it did win us the Euro Cup and was the luckiest thing ever. Just watch that and tell me them 2 saves aren't career defining.
The reason why Schemeichel's and Bank'ses saves are being compared as the greatest even is because they had to cover the entire goal to save the shot and because they managed to scoop the ball up and over the goal and not into the path of an opposition player.
If you look at the Banks save it bounces a good 4 foot infront of the goal line and goes up into banks at a reasonable hieght where Peter Schmeichel has to save right off the goal line bonce, getting down to that level! The Peter Schmeichel save is technically more difficult and therefore is the better save in my view!
So how is not controlling the ball making this a great save.
There's no doubt that it's a great reaction, but he could've just pushed the ball to the side.... the fact that he hits it wrong and pushes it over the goal doesnt make it better.
I think that Schmeichel being stationary does not makes it a lesser save, it means he had to react without momentum. He is a VERY big man and to get that low... it is astonishing.
Schmeichel was a great keeper, and this was a fantastic save... but even Schmeichel himself acknowledged that this wasn't as good. Look how far Banks runs to make his save, compared to a stationary Schmeichel.
@corrodedmonkee Huh? That's just wrong- I remember the papers at the time did a comparison of the two, and Schmeichel had to travel FURTHER. Watch the Banks save again. Pause the video when Banks comes into shot after Pele's header: there's maybe 0.3 seconds in it, and Banks is diving from a stationary position. It's a brilliant save, but in order to get a hand on it Schmeichel had to go further than Banks did. The ball was also travelling faster. What has made Banks's save is iconic because...
@corrodedmonkee it was from Pele, while Schmeichel's was from a Czech no-mark with a crap haircut. Technically, Schmeichel's was indisputably the harder save to make.
@kevcantona I fail to see how Banks running the entire length of his goal (from where the ball is crossed, he is on the opposite post) to dive to the opposite side of the corner, to a header aimed straight at Schmeichel... they are even comparable speeds, at comparable distances. The difficult part of Schmeichels was that it was very low. Banks travelled much further to make the save... Schmeichel basically falls on the spot to make the save.
@corrodedmonkee The difficulty lies in that banks ran to cover that area when the ball was in the air so he didnt run after the header but before and weas going in the right direction.
if you watch schmeichel he is stepping to the wrong side and has to jump in the different direction of his movement. Im not saying which is better cus they are both great saves in different times, and both needs to be watched and liked.
@0586730O2 sure, but banks was running and could jump, the schmeichel one is kinda harder 2 do, how often do u see a goalie react that fast standing still? not many goalies go down like that, they often try to kick it with the foot or just watch the ball go in. but banks is maybe better, but not because its not in the middle of the goal
@sexytim91 What? Banks was past the middle of the goal when Pele headed the ball, and he (Banks) was already moving in the right direction. In contrast, Schmeichel was in the middle of the goal and moving in the wrong direction.
is it just me, or is Banks' save just not as good as everyone makes out?? i mean come on, he had momentum, he was running in that direction anyway and he seems to save it with his hip or something, perfect height for a goalkeeper!! schmeichel was going the other way and had to adjust, and he also had to get down to the floor and tip it over at full stretch!!
the two saves were exactly the same..including the crowds reaction

@No1fan2pac That wasn't a 'save' it was showboating, he just had the ability to do a front flip.

think banky's was a bit better. the fact it was pele's header in the world cup knock stage makes it even more special

the ball was headed more in the middle of the goal where schmeichel was standing, banks had to go across to get his, banks save was better

Peter Schmeichel is without doubt the greatest keeper we have seen up to know, thats certainly one of the greatest saves I have seen!

I think banks's save was a bit better on in that he had to cover far more ground to reach the ball.
