I think the developers chose Ness to save some of the trophies because in EarthBound, he's the Chosen One, selected by the Apple of Enlightenment, to defeat Giygas.

Luigi is with him because it'd draw an allusion to Luigi's Mansion, where he'd rescue Mario from King Boo.

I totally agree with you, postpanamax. Dr. Eggman would've been a great character in Brawl. Since pretty much most of the main characters of each game series, have the main villain also playable.

The thing I like about King Dedede's character is that he makes you think that he's a villain, but later on shows that he's actually a good guy after all!

The thing that King Dedede, Ness, and Luigi have in common is that they're all "second bananas" or people who are in the shadows of other characters...

Ness doesn't have that problem in Earthbound/Mother 2, but he does in Brawl since Lucas is the new Mother representative from the most recent Mother game. The way I see it is that people have been paying more attention to Lucas lately...
