  • "That's alright, Groucho can call me an old Buick." she's so sweet! This has got to be one of my favorite clips -- partly because Anne fools them and also because she's so awesome, as always.

  • I love Anne Bancroft!!!

  • Groucho was arrogant prick. I don't care what kind of comedian or legend he was in the industry.

  • for as deep a voice as she had, i'm surprised that anne could answer all those questions in such a high voice. i thought for sure that there might have been glass breaking everywhere! LOL!!!!!!

  • Always loved this woman. What a great actress she was!

  • So cute!

  • she had such a sweet, shy, sexiness about her

  • Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke both gave chilling performances in "The Miracle Worker" as Anne Sullivan and Helen Keller. The infamous fight scene in the dining room between Helen and Anne is still one of the most intense fight scenes ever filmed. And not a word is spoken during the entire scene!! If you don't cry at the end, there is something wrong with you.

  • She was incredibly shy, she completely clams up here and she hated interviews, check out her 'Wogan' pseudo interview in the late 80's.

Fantastic woman and actress mind you, I loved 'The Miracle Worker' and her performance in it sooo deserved the Oscar that she won for it.

  • "are you an old buick?" hahahahaha

  • I loved her in the miracle worker, she was sensational!

  • great video of an exceptional actress !

  • So that's what Mrs. Robnison looked like when she was young. No wonder Mr. Robinson fell for her.

  • @impCaesarAvg Did you know that she was only six years older than Dustin Hoffman?

The impression in the movie is that she is at least 20 years older.

  • Anne and Mel were married in 1964. Groucho joked that she just married "a real cute guy". NOBODY thought Mel Brooks was physically "cute". Funny as hell and a great guy, yes, but not physically cute! They only appeared in one movie together (other than a few cameos), To Be Or Not To Be. Although that was Mel's movie, he got someone else to direct it, figuring it would be too tough to star with his wife and direct, too!

  • sonny liston

  • Was Groucho drunk? His questions came out of nowhere, and the moderator seemed to be covering for him.

  • @karenferguson He was just incapable of being on tv or the screen without making a joke. I've never seen him anywhere without it. I think he just wanted to make fun of the whole questioning-thing.

  • Since I was a kid, I've always said that anyone doing something extraordinary was doing an impression of Anne Bancroft and not a very good one. I saw "The Miracle Worker" when I was 7-years-old. After Anne had passed away, I saw Mel talking about his new movie. The reporter was one of these ET types and he wanted to talk about Anne's death. He said that he wasn't going to talk about them about that. That was his personal life. I've always like Mel and that just goes to show why.

  • 'are you an old buick' hahahaha

  • @kvnlmn Great question!!

  • well Groucho was a bit of a grouch here

  • Awwww, great great great Annie!

  • I have never been a fan of the Marx Bros.....but seeing Groucho here, seeing him here, well, just reinforced that feeling. I like watching these 'WML' reruns, here, and usually there are nice.....but here, between Marx and Kilgallen, who looks like a stroke victim, on occasion, they seemed more pissed off and indignant that they didn't get it, and lost all the 'good fun' humor that they normally have. I read about Kilgallen, what a bitcg she apparently was. Move on.

  • Yes, she was a treasure. I was so sad when she died. She was in fact married twice, but I believe at the time of this show, she was married to Mel Brooks.

  • Ahh, the good 'ole days.

  • This is the first one of these (celebrity guest) that the panel didn't guess. Thank you, Anne Bancroft, for stumping them. Such a wonderful talent. Thanks for posting this one!

  • Groucho did these shows purely for the fun of it, he never took them seriously.

  • Groucho is hysterical here, not insulting at all.

  • Actually, I think Groucho is quite obnoxious here.

  • That was Groucho being Groucho, it was one of his trademarks, and he could get away with it because it was expected of him. The man could mercilesly insult people, and they wouldn't be offended because it was Groucho doing it.

  • You can find Groucho's other apperance as panelist (full episode) here: watch?v=i24Z5xSJevc

  • groucho marx was a funny, crazy man. lmao!!

  • Marion Cotilard kinda looks like her now. Both stunning and talented actresses, of course.

  • In her day, she was truly a stunning beauty, but she also had immense talent.

  • Here's to you, Mrs. Robinson aka Mrs. Brooks. x o x

  • Oh man...she's hot.

  • This is wonderful! Anne was so young and beautiful!

Hard to believe that she is gone from this world!

I appreciate all that she gave us!

    Thanks for posting this!

    Brent

  • I'm surprised he didn't ask if she was an old DeSoto! :-P

  • WOW! I love me some Anne Bancroft, but where did she come up with that voice. OUCH!

  • Anne Bancroft was a class act, an incredibly talented and beautiful woman. And so versatile! She will be missed. I'm curious, they speak of her just getting married. Was she married to Mel Brooks at this point or was she married before? They were adorable together, the world never saw a more talented couple.

  • @blackpython yes, they mention "The Pumpkin Eater" which was released in November 1964 and Anne and Mel were wed in August 1964.

  • @blackpython I'm pretty sure they were referring to her marriage to Mel Brooks. They were married in August 1964. They were married for almost 41 years, until her death in 2005.

  • See Marisa Pavan's WML segment - the assumed voice is remarkably similar.

  • Wtf Dorothy? Are you a curvaceous cutie?

    Was that really necessary.

But other than that it was funny. Hahaha

  • "are you an old Buick?" - 3:19

    ROFL!

  • Groucho Marx always found something funny to say.

  • Indeed! LMAO!

    :D

  • Anne Bancroft left life due to a cancer she did hide even from the closest friends till near her death, in 2005. Such a talented person.

    RIP.

  • wow, i didn't know she hid her cancer from even the people she felt closest to. i was so sad when i heard on the radio that she had passed away. she is my most favorite actress. i miss her. i can't believe how beautiful, funny, kind, and talented she was. i heard dom deluise passed away the other day and i thought immediately to the film anne and he did together.

    "You ate the 'Ony!'"

    i miss them both.

  • Yeah. I heard about Deluise... it's very sad. And agreed. Indeed, she had an absolute humour and such tenderness. Watching What's My Line? makes me happy to see stars from the past. At the same moment, I am some sort of sad because almost all of them have left life already.

  • x) cutie.

  • are you KIDDING me, norbertR33?!

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS! anne is my favorite actress ever. ever! holy crap. im so excited!

  • Dark and lovely....and that disguised voice hurt my ears after a while, LOL!! And I loved Mr. Daly's very diplomatic clarification that Ms. Bancroft IS GORGEOUS, albeit not the 'curvaceous cutie' one might otherwise associate with a Marilyn or a Mamie. Well done, as always.

  • Anne Bancroft is an all time cutey and always seemed to be really nice. Graucho, is just too funny. Great stuff

  • sometimes the funny guy gets the girl;

    mel brooks proves it

one of the most naturally beautiful actresses

    ever on screen

i bet she was even more so off screen

  • she played Mrs. Robinson

  • So Sweet!

    Brent

  • The greatest! Thanks for posting! fAnnes should check out fAnnetasticdotcom!!

  • She's cute and also seems so nice. i liked her!

  • She's so beautiful! I love her. RIP ANNE!

  • Wow a household with both Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft -- their early parties must have been something to behold.

Dorothy Kilgallen always played seriously and to win, but she was not afraid to pass when clueless. "At least Mr. Marx will have something funny to say." ( 3:15 ) and he does! Years later Gil Fates cliped it for What's My Line at 25 LOL

  • This is the first WML segment I've seen where Arlene isn't wearing her famous heart diamond. Was this around the time it was stolen? or was that long after WML?

  • That necklace incident happened sometime in the 1980s. She might have mislaid the heart before the broadcast? ?

  • Groucho Marx 1964 appearance is not quite as funny as his 1959 appearance (YouTube What's My Line?: Judy Grable & Groucho Marx) -- but what is?.

Witty, well-read, mostly self taught, and funny as hell, Marx still inspires wise guys everywhere.

His chapeau ranks with Sophie Tucker's mauve feathered number in her 1963 appearance as most memorable hat on WML.

I don't know how often Marx went out in public without his hair in 1963, but ( 3:44 ) is an early glimpse of bald Groucho.

  • Anne Bancroft is such a beautiful actress! Not to mention talented!!
