  • oh a wed wose...how womantic

  • "...and always too soon. Right, girls?" You are SO right, Miss Lilly. ;)

What a comedic genius. We still love you, Miss Madeline.

  • As a mom and nerd, I must sing or reference this song at least once a week....

  • @Argyle3Mr, Mel Brooks said that MK auditioned using a song with "Garbage" in it. He also said that he asked MK to show him her legs. MK said "So, you're that kind of guy." MB said no, he didn't fool around, he was happily married. MK, still nervous, asked him why he has to see her legs. MB explained he knew she could do Dietrich but that she had to have the legs, she'd be straddling a chair, etc. So MK shows him her legs, but she says he can't touch. :b

  • Thank you so much for sharing!!! Please, if you could, please post more Kahn. I believe she has another appearance/segment in the telethon. Corbis has a 1986 Comic Relief photo of her in a different costume. Thank so much again! :)

  • IT'S TWUE.

  • Is there a chance to view something from "On the Twentieth Century"? My oh My would it be wonderful to see Ms.Kahn perform "Babette" Thank you.

  • Is there a chance of viewing something from "On the Twentieth Century"? My oh My would it be wonderful to see Ms.Kahn perform "Babette" Thank you.

  • I've never seen this performance before, thanks for posting this. Never knew she ever did it live. Madeline was a comedic treasure, we lost her too soon. Is that Martin Short as one of the soldiers?

  • R.I.P you beautiful Vixen.

  • we all miss her

  • they're always come and going and going and coming....and always too soon!!! lol omfg !!! i love this song !!!!

  • Does anyone have a rare clip of Ms. Kahn from the late '60's or very early 70's in which she plays Lotta Anguish on Robert Klein's brief summer tv show, "Comedy Tonight?" She sang a song with the refrain "We ate garbage" using the same voice she would employ for Lily von Schtupp. Please put it on YouTube (my wife won't believe me).

  • What was the purpose of Comic Relief for back in '86'.

  • @MrMbell2 In 1986, millions of yuppies' sweater vests were unravelling, and something had to be done.

    SOMETHING HAD TO BE DONE!!!

  • @itstheit A mature person finally answered my question. I sure as hell didnt need you.

  • @MrMbell2 I got you. 'playfully facetious' wasn't in the bounds of your lexicon, and 'immature' was the next closest option. (I look forward to hearing from you in six months)

  • @MrMbell2 Oh, yeah... and the answer to your question could have been easily Googled. Why put us to work for what could've taken you 30 seconds to find out? Yet you wait six months, then chew me out? What a world.

  • @MrMbell2 Happy 6-month anniversary. My, how we've grown together.

What do you get for a 6-month anniversary? Hmm... I'm thinking a sweater vest.

    => LOL <=

  • @MrMbell2 Comic Relief was a series of comedy benefit shows to raise health care funds for homeless (at least the American version - It began in the UK as a fundraiser for famine in Ethiopia). Founded by Bob Zmuda (friend of the late Andy Kaufman) and hosted by Billy Crystal, Whoopie Goldberg and Robin Williams.

  • @videoplusdvd Thank You for the info. I remember when Billy, Whoopi, and Robin got together with the new age Comic Relief dedicated to helping the survivors of Huricane Katrina. It was really nice.

  • I never saw blazing saddles, but is she impersonating Marlene Dietrich in Destry Rides Again?

  • @waterangel251983 Yup, that was my understanding.

  • awesome! never dreamed she was asked to recreate this for live tv, though she certainly did deserve to be asked. All-time classic bit...thanks for posting.

  • sigh.....always loved that, always loved her. What a unique talent she was.

  • MADELINE KHAN WAS A SEXXXY BITCH .... BEFORE THERE WERE SEXXXY BITCHES !!! .......

  • RIP to one of the world's funniest women!

  • Beautiful, funny, talented goddess, God bless you and rest in peace!

  • We miss you Madeline!!!

  • 12 years latter and still could pull it off what a treasure.zoh and this was done live with one or two tehersals at best.

  • "I'm not a wabbit! I need some west!"

  • Classic!!!! I love her...what a shame she is gone.

  • I love the fact that although this was 12 years after her original performance of the song Madeline still managed to make it unique and fresh. Madeline Kahn was and is one of the most talented performers to ever grace a stage or a screen.

  • What was comedy relief in relief for ( not being sarcastic-just a bit too young to remember)

  • @patoman881 Feed the hungry.

  • Homelessness.

  • Lovely, funny lady. Greatly missed.

  • LOLOLOL! My favorite.

  • Man i love her shes so great!

  • Will always be one of the most beautiful, talented and funniest entertainers of our time!

  • @lloyd614: I know her best from the Mel Brooks movies, absolutely legendary!

  • I still miss her....

  • I think she was and is brilliant!

  • I lost my heart to Madeline when I saw her for the first time crying "Howard! Howard Bannister!!"...I was 7.

    Love you forever, MK x

  • an incredible talent - only one so talented can attempt to sing so out of tune very convincingly.

  • God--she was such an incandescently talented being.

  • fuckin awesome movie

    Mel Brooks is a genius

  • This is hilarious to the max, daddy-o! Strictly from yuksville. Had no idea the late great Madeline had reprised this number for one of those Comedy Relief telethons. THANKS so very much for posting this rarely seen footage. May all your dreams & wishes come true in the New Year! :)

  • Lovely take on Dietrich!!!

  • Yes. Very.

  • "Onepack", try watching the original in Blazing Saddles. Also, watch some Marlene Dietrich clips. If you can't see the humor and appreciate Madeline Kahn, as a performer, after that, stick to the peurile and sophmoric stuff. This is way over your head..

  • thos so funny from such a beauty like her,Love it,we miss you madeline!

  • "oh lilly! lilly! legs!!"

  • My fave actress ever! Fantastic comic perfromances- this song is hilarious in blazing saddles and brilliant to see it again. Another performer who died in their 50s well before their time.

  • Said it before...I'll say it here again...the funniest woman God ever created!

  • Absolutely correct 555sss. Missed by all. God bless her

  • I have seen this! TOO FUNNY!

  • I love when she starts the second part in her high voice - I've been with thousands of men, again and again. I LOVE IT!! We will all miss her so much.

  • She is a true talent! Great show and performance!!!

  • im naming my daughter after her

  • I wish I had a daughter to name her after her

  • get a pet

  • I wish I had Madeline...she was freakin' hot!

  • An amazing underrated talent.....

  • this is awesome, i love blazing saddles and this was one of my favorite scenes.

  • She's absolutely incredible.

    I love this woman.

  • Sounds like Marlene Dietrich!

  • she was so amazin and would be amazin still! i love her voice

  • miss her

  • Madeline is so fantastic, but I never realized this was a dead on Marlene Dietrich impression. Sure miss Madeline.

  • That young, hysterical soldier seems like an early version of Chris Crocker ... "LEAVE MADELINE ALONE !! :)

  • She should have an Oscar!!

  • I agree. She was amazing. And she was always so good in Mel Brooks' films.

  • kristin chenoweths dog is named after her!

  • I wish she was still around.

  • She was one of the great, great female comedic actresses. I never understood why she didn't become an even bigger star.

  • She didn't become a bigger star because she came from a well-off family and she didn't like to work too hard. She didn't believe that she should have to recapture the same energy and creativity for every performance in a long-run stage show and gained a reputation for her unwillingness to give it her all over the long term. She felt that her talent should be displayed on occasion, but not all of the time.

  • Very interesting. I never heard that before. What is your source, if you don't mind?

  • Tex, ma`am!

  • a Marlene"Laziest gal in Town "inspired scene!

Madeleine Kahn did great, thanks for posting.

  • That was Martin Short as the singing soldier. It brings back memories!

  • It's not meant to be quality singing - that is the whole point! I think you've missed the irony. This is quite simply comedy genius at its best. Madeline Kahn, quite rightly, received an Oscar nomination for Blazing Saddles and this is a re-enactment of possibly her finest scene. If she is no Eva Cassidy, you ePhilosopher are certainly no Socrates!

  • I miss Madeline Kahn... one of the great funny ladies.

  • When the four dancing soldiers come out, the one who's running around seems like Martin Short. Does anyone know if that was him?

  • I think you're right. Good eye!

  • Is it a ten gallon hat or are you just enjoying the show?... que fuerte, me muero... jajaja

  • Taffeta, darling....

  • No one will EVER take her place! You rock forever, Madeline!

  • I guess if anyone ever does it's me! I'm named after her! Ieird I know, but she's great, but no, i'm just kidding, i won't take her place. Just her name

  • The funniest woman to have ever lived...period!

  • apparently her name Lili Von Schtupp had to be edited when Blazing Saddles was on TV becuase of what her name translated into. WHAT DOES IT TRANSLATE INTO!?!?

  • it doesn't translate into anything. have you ever heard the phrase "schtupping someone"? maybe it's yiddish.

i love it when she's vocalizing around the stage around 2:30 and 2:50. it's so sad that she died. imagine how gene wilder must feel; first his wife died of ovarian cancer and then one of his best friends dies of the same cause a few years later.

  • It a semantic joke - Yiddish on German. Schtupp means, in Yiddish, "to push" with all the male sexual explicitness implied, and basically has the same meaning, as "to screw". "Von" in German, precedes a surname to denote royal lineage, to separate royalty from commoners with the same surname. The implied translation is "Royal Fuck".

  • Yeah, 2:53 I couldn't keep the laughter in anymore.

  • to 'schtupp' is to shag/f&%k someone. And the character is basically a whore for hire, so it has a dirty implicaiton but its SO stupid that they made Brooks edit it.

  • What did they change it to? I don't think I've ever seen it on TV.

  • "Schtupp" is a Yiddish term that, loosely translated, means "screw" or "f--k". The preposition "von" reflects that this character is supposed to be German.

  • i love and adore Madeline Kahn. i miss seeing her perform. she was the greatest.

  • He said "Baby please.. I'm not from Hanana!" because the best cigars are from Cuba. Havana is in Cuba, and Lilly Von Schtupp wanted to suck, or "smoke", his big black D like a Cuban cigar! :)

  • She died young.....I loved her humor!!!

  • I LOVE it...and I want to do this for an employee talent show...FUN!!!!

  • help please! please explain the "baby, i'm not from havana!" line from cleavon after madeline whispers something in his ear during the 15 schnitzengruben scene. thanks

  • Madeline Kahn is my hero! lol

  • Does anyone have the original version from the movie Blazing Saddles. It's hilarious.

  • check ebay. I find lots of old movies there.

  • it super funny cuz it look as if she doesnt want to do it lol. i love her lol

  • Utterly fabulous. RIP Madeline.

  • OMFG!!!

i have been dying to see this forever!!!!!!!

thank you thank you thank you,lol

  • Very welcome. Happy to share!
