I don't understand why this took so many takes. The only reason that I can think of would be that they didn't choreograph it or practice it before filming.
@hobofuture It was the final wonder goal by Jackie that took 2900 takes. He was very much a meticulous perfectionist as a director in his action scenes and would take many more takes then necesary at times, until he felt satisfied. As a result this film went way over the budget (and time) set out that the producers had Sammo Hung sharing some of the directorial control in Chan's next film, the classic "Project A".
@shiretsu lol yea well i left that out because that is more part of the storyline then the match itself, people who have'nt seen the film (one of jackie's more underrated classics) would be more baffled if it ended like that. However, in the context of the film itself, that part is pretty hilarious and an ingenius way of taking the storyline forward.
@103Rockistan well no, there has been dispute about this but Hong Kong cinema expert Bey Logan (who actually visited Chan at the set of the movie) confirmed that it is the shot in this scene right at the end for Chan's wonder goal that took 2900 takes.
@WAR1232 When yOu say badminton, the thing that comes in peoples mind is racket and shuttlecock. Not this one. In the Philippine it is called "sipa" (there's 2 kinds of "sipa). Now we know that there's 2 kinds of badmintons: one with racket and the other one with none.
They spent 40 days (if you imagine they worked 12 hours a day) to do 2900 takes. That's an insanely un-necessary waste of time, effort, and resources.
This sport requires excellent footwork, great control, amazing anticipation, and alot of accuracy. I was thinking about practicing it but it is way too hard for me.
Hmm. I wish the subtitles were a little more accurate. I guess that's not really realistic though, since the announcer talks at quite a rapid pace in actual Mandarin, it'd be hard to keep up.

The Brazilian national football team might have been able to do it in fewer takes - not sure. I have seen amateurs doing beach foot-volleyball and they are pretty amazing.
@jay479i lol true. this film is really underrated amongst jackie's stuff. this scene alone highlights the effort and dedication that went into the film. Some that dont rate this film highly are looking at it as a whole. However when you see it scene by scene (as was the focus of alot the hk action films in those days) there are great sections throughout. It also gives jackie's friend and frequent double; one of the greatest stunt-guys of all time "Mars" a rare starring role.
The 2900 + take shot (I'm not sure which shot it was) is still the world record. The second place is also by Jackie, in the fan fighting scene from The Young Master; it was just under 400 takes for one shot.

If you want to watch the best jianzi video on the internet search "Kikbo Kick Shuttlecocks in Action" on youtube. You won't be disappointed.

They had to do everything specifically, it's not just a game and they filmed it, it was probably choreographed specifically.
TheBBB 3 years ago 14
It was specially choreographed and its choreographed by Jackie.
