I think it's about her being uncomfortable or something at a party. She's not connecting with anyone else, she's in the wrong place, everyone's freaking her out, she can't "pretend" (fake enjoying the event), she's an outsider...

I've got social phobia, so I'm obviously biased.

@oleanderbrew Hmm, I originally thought the song was about the dilemma of being an alternative artist in the pop world. But your interpretation definitely makes more sense. I can't believe I never saw it that way, seeing as I also have a fear about being in social situations. This makes the song more relatable to me now.
