@leokimvideo i am (hopefully) going to make a series of thomas using take alongs. i need to get the narrow gauge engines looking all dusty and dirty like they are. can you tell me how to do it please?
@LittleMonsterUSA1992 I have found if your presenting things to camera you need to over do the detail a touch, I see this all the time at work.
Sure I cave some extreme examples here and that's how I would present them to camera. If it was for a static display for personal viewing I would be be less aggressive with the detailing.
I agree that w/ film work the stage/props need to be kinda OVERdone, scenically. But with the digital sharpness these days, something need be said about more detail. I know a few makeup artists that have to insert more detail simply b.c of the better cameras now.
I have a bit of a sugguestion for the next mad bomber episode. You look like you would like to have some diversity amongst the different cherecters so here's my idea. I was thinking if you have multiples of Ertl or Take A Long toys, take a whole bunch of action figures of different series and making a cast of the faces. Then put those faces on some of the trains. That would create some diversity and for all we know draw even more attention to the next Mad Bomber episodes. Just a meere idea.
mad props on that FAST paint method! Im doing a sci-fi and needs TONS of weathered props vehicles and scenery. it seems overwhelming, but your vid just gave me some hoped relief. you rule!
@Madkre8tor It's a hard and fast method, possibly not suitable for all. I find models appearing in video need to be overdone for the camera to read the distress. I know many model train people play with powders but I tend to find their effect to be quite subtle.
@leokimvideo Your videos are absolutely fantastic! The Mad Bomber series has amused me enormously and your making-of films are incredibly informative and professionally done! Your comment about 'overdoing' paint effects for video certainly rings true - I've been experimenting with miniature effects and in my latest scene subtle effects just weren't showing so I really had to overdo them; in the flesh it looks terrible but on video it's fine.
@treedoublehappiness I bought mine at a toys R us, they seem to come and go. Look carefully at the cheaper end of toys you will find this crane is packed in quite a few toys.
I love the front end loader (To a degree it looks like it was caught in the fireball of a Natural Gas explosion.) I like how a little bit of the stripes by the cab show through it gives it that look like there is a livery under this layer of grime.
What's funny I have that same construction set (I got mine years ago, though) Still have most of it...
Can you put the shellac mix into a water spray as well as the black spritz so you have two bottles? Will the shellac mix dry solid within the tubes and destroy the spray?
I just feel perhaps that the spray would give a more thourough coat...
I've never heard of shellac before. But there are a few things popping in my mind, what will this do to plastic models that had brass or metal parts and products, as well as moving parts and electrical conductivity if used in a model railroad application (or model railroad video application) Also, you said that the effect is reversible, does it fade over time or rub off?
I thought this would be boring, but it wasn't. I don't have any talent for this sort of thing. Everything I do would have to be virtual and I'm still not very good at that as well.
I just lack the patience for this sort of thing, but I can appreciate it. :)
Erm no. Leokimvideo would rather use homemade sets and effects than go anywhere near CGI. Besides when I watch his videos I know the explosions are real and I would never want that to change.
Well, if he did, then he might lose subs, we like seeing REAL things, not CGI. And please, TurboJUSA, take down you contest video. It is plagiarism and makes no sense at all.
This video will teach modellers they don't have to spend a fortune to make something extremelly realistic. The most basic Childrens toy can quickly transform just like that. It's nice to modify things because it adds a charm to your layout and is certainly more appealing than simply buying expensive scenery.
Thank you Leo for revealing how you make your models look so realistic. The effect is amazing especially what you achieved with the spaceship. I am becoming more and more interested in making model films now. What I particuarly like about it is that your totally free to use your imagination and a limited budget can be made to go a long way. Excellent voice over as well Leo. Another superb film in your library. Well done and thanks again for sharing. :)
Many thanks for sharing this truly abstract method. I wonder what other model train guys will think of this, as they are used to powders and painting for weathering.
@hiesler this method is used widely in the film industry by scenic artists, it's a fast method for a fairly rustic look. The powders and paints do have their place, that is if you have the time to apply them.
For film and video work you really need to over do the effect so it can be seen.
Is awesome seeing how u were able to do the rusty looking effects to ur models ^^ Fabulous vid there Leo ^^ The Coal line is being featured again? Oh dear, had we known sooner, u could have kept the model longer to have it in the background or something. But still, awesome vid and something I'll keep in mind in the near future ^^

Question do the small Take Along characters just lift out of the cars or did you have to cut him out.
SkarloeyFan 1 year ago
@SkarloeyFan
I suspect your asking about the FC in the Take Along car.
You have to drill out the rivets and all will be revealed in how to remove the FC, there is a plastic clip which holds him in no cutting required.

It is a very robust finish, if applied to shiny plastic it may scratch off easily.
