There is no guarantee that aliens would share our sense of morals or have any whatsoever. They may see us as ants or cattle if we're lucky. Obstacles in the way of more resources if we're not.
Scientific advancement doesn't equal spiritual, moral or emotional advancement.
Beware the universe. Nature shows us that it is hostile. No reason to think it's any different in the stars.

@BCT071 If Aliens invaded I doubt it would have much to do with resources, If it happened, it would most likely be because our planet is prime real estate in terms of supporting life. If they come here and start exterminating us, it will be so they can take our planet and start colonizing, not to steal our resources. The idea that they will automatically be peacefull, or spiritually superior just because they are technologically advanced is just wishfull thinking.

The universe is a vast place. Even traveling across our galaxy at the speed of light would take thousands of years. It's entirely possible they traveled a relatively short distance to get here. Only a cooperative species can evolve to this level of technological sophistication.
That doesn't mean they did it like we do it.
No monetary system,Religion,Racial differences or Politicians would speed the process up greatly as these human activities have certainly proved to be brakes on progress at different times in our past.
A science and progress driven species,free of division and conflict is what i would expect to see.

Technological know-how only progresses when new discoveries about the universe and the elements within it are made.
This is the very essence of consciousness.
Knowing that you will one day die is the first sign of what i call consciousness.
Followed by complex language,tool making to electricity generation and advanced technology.
If you are anywhere along this time line you are what i would call a conscious being.
We would not be seen as cattle or microbes.

Consciousness is the ability to be aware of – sensations, moods, thoughts, etc. Much too briefly put, this ability is part of our biological endowment. Knowledge (technological & scientific, to mention only two forms of it) is part of one’s cultural equipment. Surely you do not mean that the second is the "essence" of the first?

The technological advances are a by-product of discovery.

However, one of the sad things human history does teach us, is that when 2 civilizations meet, it's often bad news for the low-tech one (which, generalized to the alleged ongoing cosmic encounter, wld appear to be us!)

When i sit down and watch the news every night i can't help but get the feeling that at this point in time we would rank very low on the scale for morality in a technologically advanced species.
Even if that ranking was only inside this galaxy.

Movies like Planet 51, The Fourth Kind, Avatar and shows like V are coming out this year. Star Trek on DVD on November 17. If the war in Afghanistan is ended by mid-November, I think disclosure would soon follow, perhaps on December 13th, right in the middle of the Copenhagen Climate Conference, which seeks to unite all governments into one entity for the sake of our dwindling planet.
