  • Our heroes predict Romney and Santorum 30 years in advance.

  • The best part is to watch Jack Cafferty now; he's ranting against everything DEVO foretold!

  • I remember seeing this when it was broadcast; I saw the later of the Halloween Night shows @ Radio City Music Hall they were promoting. Now my 4 year-old son is into DEVO; after seeing them on Yo Gabba Gabba, he found the DEVO video on the NickJr website & kept playing it over & over... So I got out all my CDs & now he's a Real Spudboy -- he was thrilled to get "Something For Everyone" for Xmas!

  • "aren't you kind of young to be so cynical?" - wait till 30 years later!

  • Interviewer pisses mark off at :58 calling them a sell out and changing their sound to fit in with rock and roll. What a bitch, totally disrespectful! They were original and still are

  • hahaha, I like the woman at the end... "uh OK, as we continue today..."

  • Jerry: Duty Now :)

    Interviewer: .....right....

  • THEY WERE A THREAT TO ALOT OF PEOPLE,FOR NO REASON!

  • "Devo is going to be across the street from where we are right now." Um, okay. Where the hell would that be? lol.

  • Lovely.

  • this interviewer is so confused

  • Funny how he just tosses the candy bar at 1:01 LOL!

  • well it seems i need an energy hat now...

  • "Susan" at the end, you can tell she thinks it's just a huge joke.

  • I love the look on the woman's face at the end. She looks like she witnessed a public urination.

  • devo is so punk.

  • Love it!

  • I love how even tho they're sitting down, somehow they're still dancing :)

  • A musical Laxative for a constipated society...That about says it.

  • We just watch the news! Ha!!

  • I love how out of place the Jack looks as he tries to patronize DEVO. In 1981 he must have been one fo the last of his breed. Hoping to mock this crazy new music out of existence and bring back the non threatening hits of the 50's. And the segway back to whatshername and her snide little, "OK, back to.." comment. Devo truely was right about everything.

  • OMG, love Devo!! Excellent, thanks so much for posting this! :)

  • idiot pinks...

  • ''It was popular because it could be interpreted as being convoluted and sick" as if these dudes didn't and live and breathe satire and irony!!!

  • I like how Mark takes out a candy bar, eats some of it, then just tosses it behind him.

  • Mark's optical wear looks like the entire contraption my optometrist has inside that dark room with the eye chart

  • gerald casale for world president

  • the good old days!

  • everybody should see this

  • You can easily see how way far ahead devo was in consciousness, praaise devo

  • Their new CD is awesome!! ..got it for fathers day. lol

  • I saw a clip of them being interviewed by Regis Philbin last week. It took hardly anything to get him and his wife thoroughly weirded out. All they did was briefly explain the masks and the presence of Jacob, and the awkward pauses were glorious. Compare this nearly 30 year old interview to what it apparently takes now, and that's all the proof of de-evolution you need.

  • Viva Feudal Corporate State !

  • Had no idea how awesome these guys are. I thought they were just another 80s group, but turns out that was just a front for what they're really about. "Musical laxative for a constipated society" indeed

  • These dudes are the /b/tards of the 80's

  • @dustandechoes91 Amen, man

  • So that's where they got the idea for Anchor man then - more like @&nker man!

  • The news media are morons. That guy had absolutely no idea even what these guys were even trying to talk about. I can't even believe that someone paid that idiot to interview anyone, I guess he must be ok with politicians and ball players.

  • @Oldbmwr100rs Gotta disagree..sure, he is a media chump. But for 1981 daytime TV this guy Cafferty gives alotta value to DEVO, he invests in the ruse and plays with it. I like Cafferty a little more for this interview

  • 1:03 WTF? What does he throw behind his shoulder?

  • @bacofishtaco Motherbaugh tosses a banana peel. He had just stuffed it in his mouth. Notice the cameras try and keep him out of the picture for most of the "interview". He is very animated and they were nervous that he would do something vulgar. Remember this was a live interview.

  • You know,Im into punk rock, among other types of music, and I have to say, these guys have more balls than alot of punk bands today.Although there method of comunicating the message is different, these guys are as punk as it gets in my book.

  • CNN's Jack Cafferty, now a crotchety old man, seen here as a slightly less old crotchety old man. Why are all the tv newspeople so plastic and clueless? Is hideous repression just part of the sale? It's like networks started shopping for anchors from religious cults.

  • @gamesDAMNED

seems that Jack Cafferty was ALWAYS a crotchety old man... what was he, 30 years old in this vid?!?

  • man...Devo were waaaaay ahead of their time....anyone's time.....

    Duty Now for The Future......

  • So Classic! The interviewer is trying to be seriously with guys who aren't serious..or are they very serious?

  • "We're basically a musical Laxative for a constipated society."

    Bravo!

  • it's now my favorite quote everr!

  • @AndrewDaniele87

    Me too!

  • @Shryke2010 I am jealous that I didn't think of that line.

  • @balletcomposer

    Likewise...

  • no one gets away... until they whip it.

  • Thanks again - posted on my blog (and thanked you).

  • WTF, Jerry "Casall"?! It's Jerry Casale.... Pronounced "Cah-sah-lee". Any mongo can see this. Anyway this interview makes me laugh every time. I find myself quoting Jerry often.

  • "We're not cynical, we just watch the news"

No-one in popular culture today is half as smart as MM & GV were 20 years ago.

    D-evolution is now.

  • Did not know Jack Cafferty and Sue Simmons were on the same channel...crazy....

  • Duty now!

  • Wow, great interview. The media is still so damn tightassed, we need DEVO.

  • Q:ARE WE NOT MEN?

  • A: WE ARE DEVO

  • best explanation on the energy domes ever

  • And Cafferty appreciates it. I like the way Mothersbaugh says slightly in the background, "That's back down"

  • devo new the song had a sexual twist to it and they meant it in that way.....(whip it that is)

  • I had no idea what these guys were about. I only knew "Whip It". It blows me away to see how far ahead they were in their thinking.

  • @Bd951 Bro if most were hip to what DEVO was all about back in the day everyone in the world would know about them.

They were "decades" ahead of their time.

    DUTY NOW FOR THE FUTURE

  • @Bd951 There was a lot of people before Devo with the same philosophies. Same philosophies inspired Punk.

  • @Bd951 Unfortunately, Gerald V is now working as a Zionist agent who is pushing the official 9-11 story, even though the official 9-11 story was proved to be absurd long ago. Entertainers who are pushing the official 9-11 story should be considered criminals. Or, at the very least, they should be viewed with a suspicious eye. I idolized Devo as a child, but now I realize that they were scumbags all along. : (

  • @dmh497 Do you have a link for this, because I can't find anything that explains his views about 9/11. That's really lame if he is promoting the official story, maybe he's going senile in his old age?

  • this is the best cafferty file i've ever seen!

  • Duty now!

  • we need DEVO now more than 1980

  • "A musical laxative for a constipated society" LMFAO Brilliant! And they still are

  • @Germoturk Jerry is brilliant! He's my favourite Devo band member! When asked if they were a bit young to be so cynical, Casale and Mothersbaugh as a tag team offered the most cynical response. "We're not cynical." "We just watch the news."

    Long live Devo!

  • @DerKosmonaut1972 Awesome! :-)

  • "Oooohkay, as we continue today..." LOL!

  • That's a good interview for mainstream afternoon TV back then. Hats off to Cafferty, even though he has a Devo wig too.

  • Ha! Yes he does.

  • wow they're really witty

  • "We're delighted, Jack." Ha! Hilarious.

  • Lol I love the way the presenter says "... energy domes?"

  • "Well, people accused us of wearing flower pots." LOL

  • (1:35) Gerry says, "It was popular because people could interpret it as convoluted and sick" (feigning irony) - guess he knew Cafferty and most watchers hadn't seen the video for "Secret Agent Man" 5 years earlier. If that is not pushing the Sick button I don't know what is.

  • FUCKIN JACK CAFFERTY lol

  • pity people dont have this spirit any more..

the 80's was a fantastic decade.

  • yeah man, you're right.

Now its all about fitting into the box and anyone is affraid of breaking out of it. If you break out of it, people will criticize you. Energy Domes off to Devo for doing something new, unique, and different.

  • Comment removed

  • Not a bad interview for a mainstrem, outsider type guy.

  • the square guy was a good sport

  • Devo are true punks.Smart as whips too.How could you not be cynical in the good ole U.S.A.

  • What it's ACTUALLY like when unique people talk to conformists.

  • that s jack cafferty right? what a tool

  • I waited in line 8 hrs in Portland to see this New Traditionalist tour, the best concert experience ever!

  • That interviewer is still around, on MSNBC I think. He's in some of the Palin-related clips here on YouTube.

  • Brilliant. Thanks for posting.

    Gerry is so articulate.

  • "Actually, we´re just adapting to the feudal corporate state that we find ourselves in"

Way ahead of their time, yeah!

  • chemotherapy jack. brilliant.

  • I cannot favorite this enough.

    This cannot favorite me enough.

  • If there was a most favorite favorite, this would be it.

  • EPIC!!!!!!

  • Lol, I like that "why are you wearing those glasses?"... "cause I'm legally blind without em"... "thats a good reason".

  • This is why I love Devo. Brilliant.

  • THe interviewer doesn't seem to know they are mocking him.

  • That's an early 80s Jack Cafferty out of New York. He's pretty much the same chump he used to be.

  • LOVE IT THANKS.

  • 2:50 "we fed dogs out of those and they enjoyed" haha

  • feudal

  • This interviewer sounds like he's from western Tennessee or something. His expressions are timeless, and its great to hear such ribald dissent from a band during such a constipated era!

  • chemotherapy, jack

  • You know ,everyone considered Pink Floyd the first real genius' of Rock! But, I think it was Devo!! These guy's were great at the Inland Invasion in 2005!! San Bernadino!! I think their sense of humor is just as important as their contribution to rock!!

  • There will never be anything like them again...Ever.

  • frickin hilarious. XD

  • "chemiotherapy, jack" ahahahaahhahahahah

  • Jerry Casale is so attractive

  • He is isn't he?

LOL at Mark tossing something over the chair and Jack Cafferty is fugly.

  • i laughed at that too! hahaha, what is it?

  • I think it's a chip packet lol.

  • woodratgirl: mark's eating a candy bar (looks like a zagnut) , finishes and tosses the wrapper after looking around like he needs a wastebasket and there isn't one to use..

  • Oh okay, lol I was wondering what it was and I've never heard of zagnuts since I'm a NZer.

    :) Thx for the info.

  • Cafferty is such an ass. ALWAYS was.

  • holy shit its jack cafferty

  • That's Jack Cafferty interviewing them, he is on CNN every night! Looks like he was wearing a Devo wig too, funny that he's kind of making fun of their appearance.

  • This interviewer seems more absurd than Devo has ever been. He's like Pat Cashman without the self-aware absurd humor.

Also, this is possibly the first time I've ever laughed aloud at the word Chemotherapy.

  • i want his glasses :0

  • hahahah

  • Why did you change your image...from the...bowls on your head...

    Hilarious

  • are we not men?

  • we are DEVO!

  • I love DEVO.

  • HAIL DEVO!!!!

  • Great stuff!

Does anyone know what Mark is eating? Candy bar?

  • Oh man these guys are awesome

  • this is priceless, thanks for posting!

  • If a dog was hungry he would eat out of a Chinese toilet.

  • They're awfully young. And they watch the news.

  • AWESOME THANKS.

Devo was cool. Sue Simmons, on the other hand, seems a bitch. GO CAFFERTY!

  • OMG, it's that guy on CNN. Ha.

  • I am Cowboy Kim

  • A young Jack Cafferty?

  • Yes.

  • weird... just weird.... that's all I can say lol

  • Legends- the 1st album with Eno is still a classic- respect

  • I was super happy to find this, thank you.

    Get SLACK... now!

  • praise BOB!

  • tension mounts in a foreign place

  • LMAO Mark just through that trash behind him. That was hilarious. I also loled at the end where they were like "duty now" and the interviewer was like "what?"

  • Punk Defined...

  • please dont call devo a punk band.. theyre in a league of their own.

  • nah, they are punk too and who cares

  • Brilliant! Thanx for posting, and always remember: Duty Now.

  • I started listening to devo, then I started LISTENING to devo, like this, thank you for posting

  • This is one of the vids that made me say to myself, "I need to get into Devo".

  • "they're energy domes"

    "energy domes...?"

You could tell he was like "wooo wierdo alert"

    DEVO are soo good (Y)

  • was that jack cafferty? holy crap. he's certainly relaxed a bit from 27 years ago

  • That monotone cocksucking roach, interviewing them is an idiot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • They are Strange fellows and their outfits but I like their music!

  • These guys are so fucking Brilliant!!!

They just toyed with everyone in the studio, totally hilarious!

  • "remembering that this is on five thirty in the afternoon and it's live..." HAHAHAHAHA, can do attitude that is familiar to all businessmen, lol

  • haha, awesome

  • i admire them for trying to help people. its a shame they were viewed as weirdos (although it wasn't completely uncalled for).

  • Now that's punk.

  • MARK LOOKS ZOOTED

  • Great old interview only thing missing is when Jack Cafferty (news guy) throws it back to the other Anchor Sue Simons she should have yelled

"Devo, what the F are you doing"

  • "We just watch the news."

Excellent work Mark. Classic interview all up.

  • what do u mean?

  • cynical? they watched the army shoot their classmates.

  • "Musical laxative..." hahaha XD amazing he could say that with a straight face - gotta be the coolest guys on the planet! :D

  • Love it. A musical laxative for a Constipated a Society.

    Straight-up PUNK

    :-)

  • jack caffertyy? hahaha

  • wait, what was he throwing behind him at 1:00? Looked like a bananananana.

  • lol, recycling our energy.......

  • That condescending douche should have never been allowed to interview the musical genius that briefly graced his presence. He was sadly underqualified.

  • Sorry to disagree, but the host (and the lady at the very end) was absolutely perfect. Without even knowing it, he became an integral member of DEVO for the duration of the interview. At least that's the way Connie tells it.

  • word.

  • love devo allways will tied for number one of my favorite bands the compitition is oingoboingo

  • lmfao i love these guys they are so weird just liek me :)
