This was George's last on camera interview with public. He did some video at home to promote the remastering of All Things Must Pass but this was the last one with an outside company. He had been brutally stabbed only 6 months before and his cancer would return in 2001
It was nice that she didn't badger him about Beatles stuff. He probably appreciated that she kept it light. He was probably afraid at first that he would get roped into a big interview.
I feel sorry for George geting followed by this camera crew and that female reporter he never liked the press and the critics he was a recluse and a very private man R.I.P
I'm sick of those nutcases that hide behind aliases to say unrelevant comments. I made a cleanup of all unrespectful remarks and blocked a couple of weirdos. Here's what it is. If you want to make thrash comments, leave your real name , phone number and your email. If I have the slightest doubt about your identity, your comments will be erased and you'll be blocked. It's as simple as that.
George once said that the Beatles gave their (his) nervous system. Once he realizes this short interview has nothing to do with THE BEATLES or his illness he warms up real fast.. I LOVE IT!
Ah bless George, he was going to be ascerbic and blunt, but her innocence and good intentions won him over, question by question. You could see him settling more each second, as he could sense she meant no harm, and therefore he ended up being very gracious.
he only stopped to talk to her because she's a young girl. women reporters have it much easier when trying to get an unscheduled interview with a male rock star. You heard him say "oh no" at first and then she said "oh please" and he gave in.
Too bad the interviewer was too dim to continue on the very important statement Harrison made about what music he listens to in his car - in other words, what his favourite music is. It would be so important if people nowadays would indeed re-discover such gems as Hoagy Carmichael's "Barnackle Bill The Sailor" from 1929, which Harrison mentions (although the recording is actually from 1930).
george was kind to her..i've seen interviews like this with john and he too could be nice and accessible and not dismissive...george was great..i miss him...hope he's at peace...
#1 He only gives the interview because he immediately liked the interview girl.
#2 How does a former Beatle walk through a room without being harassed? I mean I know George hates to be bothered but as a fan if I saw him in a room I would have to ask for a picture with him, there is just no way I could have enough self control not to ask.
The poor guy just couldn't get any peace, and yet he still managed to be polite in answering stupid questions. He's smiling away, and yet you can tell he'd like nothing more than to get away from the camera in his face.
You have to keep in mind that it was an unprepared interview made in the spur of the moment. The lady had to come with a few questions in a flash. Of course, she seems to be unexperienced. But she was not at the event to meet Mr. Harrison. He just happened to be there.
I know this is ganna sound really weird, but I actually had a dream about him once when he was the age his is in this vid and once when he was younger about in his Beatle years. After his death I was really heart broken, but those dreams actually gave me a little closure, because I knew then that he was alright and in a better place. I still miss him greatly though.
I wish I cold have had the pleasure and privilage of knowin him personally.
He will always be in our hearts. We love you George
i love it. first he tried to avoid it, then politely answered their questions, then his favorite thing about Montreal were the croissants. how awesome was he! he gave the world a lot of light and beautiful music and some laughs. miss him lots but he will always be awesome. :)
@Stube437 No, not at all. I have read several accounts where George got impatient with fans or press people whose paramount concern was only the Beatles. Sure, George acknowledged their history, legacy, etc. but being a progressive sort who focused on the RIGHT NOW, I think George preferred to discuss his solo music or gardening, or one's spirituality.
"Ringo" fans.... In honor of Ringo's 70th, I hope U will check out my "RINGO"video. It's very retro with Beatleish touches & was done as a labor of love and with the utmost respect for the Fabs. My attempt at putting a little bit of the Beatle spirit out there for Beatle fans. It's also my tribute to George Harrison's slide playing as well as Ringo's unique style.
George and Paul were the most willing of the Beatles to deal with fans. Many celebrities these days are- rude, don't want to be bothered, or can't be trusted. THe Beatles were the nicest, funniest, cutest, most talented band that has ever existed. RIP John and George, we miss you!
I knew a musician that met George on a plane either going to or coming from Great Britian probably about this time, around 2000. My friend told me..... Although George was being bothered by endless people who wanted autographs or what ever.....he was very kind and gracious about the whole thing
For a guy dealing with cancer and had almost been stabbed to death the year before, he had a great attitude. He was a very intelligent person as well. Lets not forget GREAT guitarist.
george was gracious..and she was cool and not offensive..thats why he took a few moments and had a nice exchange with her..this was i 2000 so he passed away a year later...so thanks to this nice lady for doing this interview...one of his lasts ..and i'm thankful to see it...he was a nice man...God Bless him....always has a special place in me heart for george
Poor George. He was just kind of ambushed into this interview. He just wanted to be there for the sake of being at an F1 race which was his passion, not get totally Shanghaied into an interview.
At least he was civil, but you could see he was pretty annoyed. "Is he with you?" I would be too.
No, I mean that he died in 2001. He was already diagnosed with the cancer (hence the 'No, I just drive the wheelchair now' joke), and yet he still kept up his sense of humor knowing that he was going to pass away at some point in the near future. And I still love Paul and Ringo to Death, but Christ-Paul is 66, and Ringo's 68. Yeah, they look wonderful (especially Ringo), but that doesn't mean they're not getting older.
Very nice. He obviously just wants to mind his own business and do his thing, but very gracious and witty nonetheless. Sometimes I still cant believe George is not around anymore, but "thats the way it goes"...
I think the Oggie Carmichael (and that they have Barnacle Bill as a musician) mistake is just that it's a French person having to translate really fast and no doubt very young, so it just came out sort of phonetically. It's a car race they're covering, not a music event. The guy typing the translation is clueless, but trying I guess. We're lucky to see this.
He was cool. It must have been difficult for a young musician to compete with two enormous powers in the Beatles, but he did and successfully. I saw him in 1976 at the Dark Hoarse tour. His throat was totally blown from recording the album and Billy Preston stole the show. Harrison told us to be quiet and pay attention to Ravi Shankar, too. A bit preachy, but that's because he was full of passion.
Fab post - could see George's brain deciding whether to ignore or come back - his civility got the better of him here - I think because it was a great first question, with no mention of Beatles! Miss him, like a favourite uncle.
? If you mean doing her job to earn a paycheck, well yes. . .She was sent to the race to interview George, what was she supposed to do, refuse? George was a kind-hearted guy who couldn't resist "Oh please, Mr. Harrison!" By this time, I'm sure George knew how to handle the press and expected some attention when he went to public events like this.
I only hope Oggie is a French spelling or variant for Hoagy, although I did turn my head at seeing that one. A Google search for "Oggie Carmichael" yielded one French result (in an article also discussing Charlie Parker), so may-be.

Well, this "old music", as you put it, makes me feel really good. It's nice to be able to listen to good music after having all the bad crap shoved in our ears growing up.
George had the innate ability to figure out peoples motives very quickly. Very pleasant!
