Best snooker player to have never won the World Title. I think I agree with Steve Davis when he was asked why Jimmy had never won it; he said just plain old fashioned bad luck. Jimmy was the right player in the right place, but at the wrong time. Mind you, he did have his chance in 1994 I think it was, but it wasn't to be. Left behind some truly great moments though.
Both O'Sullivan and White were and are great potters. I think you could argue Ronnie has a more natural talent and might edge him but being old enough to have seen White's career - there's not much in it. White's rest play is the better surely, and could pull off the most difficult of pots. The difference above all is sportsmanship and White was indeed a great sport.
I believe when Jimmy was playing at his peak, Ronnie would be no match against him. Jimmy should have won at least two times world championship. He was really unlucky to lose Henry.
@hamingkee if ronnie wsa playing his is peak trust me jimmy would have no chance at all. Jimmy should have won 2? Osullivan HAS won 3 and SHOULD HAVE won more.
@FlaviusConstantius Jimmy could have beaten carter, as they both fail under pressure. But Ronnie was playing that well that year nobody could have beaten him. Jimmy against Dott in a world final I would have to favor Dott - he never wilts under the pressure.
@outdoorpooltable In which case why has Dott only won 2 ranking events to White's 10 and only reached 7 major finals in his career? Jimmy would have beaten the mentally combusting Ronnie that Dott faced in the semis that year. I would take the best version of White over the best version of Dott.
@FlaviusConstantius I would also take the best version of jimmy over dott but jimmy CAN'T produce his best form in a world final, as he's proved. No one can say he should have won so and so world titles, because the fact is he's had chances to win the tournament and tweaked easy balls due to the pressure. Plus dott only seems to perform in the WC, it somehow brings the best out of him. What is FACT is that Ronnie is better than Jimmy, the point I originally was trying to make.
Jimmy did produce in 84, 92 and 94 and It took a tremendous effort from the 2 greatest players ever to beat him. Dott did it in one final against Ebdon, and hasn't done a lot else to be frank. The idea that Jimmy would have no chance against ROS is laughable. Ronnie is great on a good day but very beatable on a bad day, of which he has many. It's debatable whether Ronnie would have won a title in 5 finals against prime Davis/Hendry. Remember he only finally won it when Hendry was declining.
@FlaviusConstantius I suppose we'll just have to agree to disagree, I simply don't rate Jimmy White as highly as most, he wouldn't be in my top 5 of all time, and Ronnie would.
@outdoorpooltable I guess we will. He probably isn't top 5 all time and I wouldn't rate him above Ronnie in the all time stakes either. I just thought your original assessment of him was overly harsh. He did win nearly all the other majors...UK, Masters, Grand Prix, Classic, British Open, European Open, Irish Masters etc and but for being around during the prime of probably the two best players ever I'm certain he would have added the World too. Nice debating with you.
@FlaviusConstantius You are absolutely right if you say, that Jimmy would have won the WC if he would't have played against peak Davis/Hendry. But I think that Ronnie was able to beat them. Ok,Ronnie lost two times against Hendry in the semis of the WSC during the peak time of Hendry. But don't forget that Ronnie beat Hendry two times in the UK Championship final in 1993 und 1997 and even in the Hendry peak time Ronnie was ahead in Head to Head against Hendry.
Great Clearance and a great shot on the brown with the spider. I think Jimmy had this high break of the tournament tied with John Higgins who took his first title that year.
is this a wig ?? or did the wig come later?? his dad never wore a wig but he talked rubbish!! his son wud do this and that !! HIS SON NEVER WON THE ULTIMATE BECAUSE HE IS A DRUG ADDICT!!
to your discussion about ronnie: It is not a question of talent, ronnie certainly is one of the most natural talents, it is a question about being a serious competitor, which ronnie is not all the time, in a bad way
@AntiFanBoy1 clearly you're the real idiot here, fuck tart. look at the facts:
ronnie is overrated? how many titles did he win?
talentless? besides stephen hendry, who else matches his centuries and maximums?
more importantly, who is it that is keeping snooker alive in this new millennium? who is it that the people in shanghai love watching? who is snooker's most recognizable figure for the last decade?
Darren Morgan said after the match that God would have struggled against Jimmy playing like this. Fair play to Darren because this was sublime to watch, Jimmy's timing is not the robot pause on the backswing, it's good to watch, turning snooker into a flowing art form like A Higgins, Ronnie etc. Unbelievable shot on the brown with the spider.

did he get the high break prize eventually?

@theodorehui I don't think so. Higgins made 143 one or two times there also that year.

@eblanaken That was the highest break that year Jimmy had it tied with John Higgins who won his first world title that year.

@GAC1984 Thanks for that. Do you think if 147s become too common it wiil let the air out a bit? May be time then for new challenges, time clock etc.

let me rephrase this in a better way, if you are too stupid to understand the obvious fact:
who pulled out of shanghai masters 2010 and subsequently led to MAJOR disappointments?
or the alternative question, do you think people would be equally disappointed if someone else other than ronnie pulls out of the game?
use your brain, BOY!
