you should always carry a 45 pistol too, just in case a bear does attack you, you can shoot yourself. Never carry pepper spray if you don't have salt spray, salt brings out the flavor. Always carry a 43 cal lever action if you think you might run into a bucket.
Hi Jim, I got a kick outta your informative movie. A thing I'd add is this: replace the front sight with a tritium orange sight, and replace the rear ramp sight with a williams peep sight. When in bear country take out the rear aperature and keep it in yer pocket. This gives you a natural quick-sighting gun that is more accurate, using the full length of the barrel. 30 years in Alaska and a lot of bears later, this is my favorite bear setup, and it works.( I haven't become a grizzly turd yet!)
love ur vids MrJumBow, very informative. but i would like to add...i would also carry a large caliber side arm say 45 acp or bigger, thats because if u get ambushed by a bear and don't or can't swing a rifle into shooting position...a large chunk of lead in the face or head could save ur life. i carry a 444 marlin and my 1911A1 side arm, and like u i say screw the pepper spray for the very same reasons u do (wind direction). i hope one day to make it to montana, but for now its only a dream.
I carry my Marlin 45/70 in Australia coz we have Koala bears in the bush here. They mightn't be as big as their cousins the Grizzly, but they sure are nasty critters!!
@Ruger1000fps I always say that I will pack grenades in case we end up fighting on fair ground. Then, I will make sure to unfairly kill him after I missed my attack and he gets his chance.
I live in Livingston myself. About once a year I find bear scat in my back yard. Usually between the cars like the bear was hiding while taking his dump. It's probably a black bear but it could be a grizz. I don't carry a lever action for bear protection. I have a Raging Bull in 454 Casull. That should work. If you use pepper spray and wear silver bells on your boots it makes it easy to find your remains. The bear shit will have silver bells in it and smell like pepper.
@smarticus88 well I do recreational drugs so what lol. a little weed doesn't hurt lol. God don't be all butt hurt over a youtube comment. It's not like I know you in person so why does it matter? @BSRadar100 lol well that's good to know now that i'm not breaking any laws. lol thanks for the info. What about state that probably varies I take it?
@mrbratsch - They passed the law last year allowing you to carry in all National parks regardless of what state it's in. As far as state parks ....well that's up to each individual state.
for this gun? which the price of a cartriges? I think one or 300wdm 338wsm ultr rem mag or 300 does the same and cheaper. I think one shotgun slug does work The Same
Great topic, 450 Marlin isn't overkill on boar by a long shot. As you can see from vid I shoot 400 lb boar at 35 yards in lungs with 45/70 and it laughs, my buddy shoots it at 55 yards with 450 Marlin and it drops then crawls down hill laughing. Boar have tougher hide and shield than Grizz, although id rather be attacked by a boar than a bear.
Well, he's certainly well protected in the event that he's attacked by a five gallon water bucket. But seriously, folks, I do respect what this fellow is saying. In Grizzly country your only real protection in event of an attack will be a heavy caliber gun and the skill to use it effectively. I don't condone bear hunting because I admire the animals too much but I've got no problem with shooting a bear in self defense. / No gun? Then bend over, grab your ankles and kiss your ass good-bye.
For those who choose to wear tinker bells, blow whistles and carry pepper spray for protection it is important to know how to distinguish the difference between Black Bear feces and Grizzly Bear feces. Black Bear feces will contain bits of deer bone and squirrel fur. Grizzly Bear shit will contain lots of little tinkling bells, whistles and will smell like pepper spray. Oh, and it is true that Timothy Treadwell became one with the bears. In fact, a bear digested him after dinner.
That weapon/caliber would be perfect for me to hunt wild boar in rough terrain at short-middle range in Northen Spain. Light, powerful, and way cheaper than a semi-auto (I hope).
wait, so if a grizzly can smell a human from a mile away as you say, why would you also suggest the use of "tinker bell" shoes or "look like a bell end" blowing a whistle. Unless they can hear you from a mile away aswell.. If that theory holds water, one should never find them selves within a mile of a grizzly.
I use a semi auto BB gun when I put down Grizzlies. The trick is to have lots of spare ammo and a secure firing point (preferably double layer cinder block or steel reinforced concrete). You might say "how silly" but the savings in ammo could leave you with more steak money. Oh yea this may take as much as 2 days in oder to accomplish the task, so bring a book or two.

thanks for pointing the gun at me. i too am a gun person but i don't think you need a gun every time you go into grizzly country let allow bear country . i been in many camping trips where i've seen grizzly bear tracks. I know idiot either i've have friends who have and been charged by grizzlys and killed them with a 44 remington magum . mAYBE HAVE SOME EXSERANCE WITH BEARS BEFORE YOU MAKE A VIDEO ABOUT HOW TO PROTECT YOUR SELF. a bucket is't a test for grizzly bears at all
this video is bullshit, taking shooting lessons from an ignorant hick, i am a hunter and a fisherman but its fucking redneck dumb ass motherfuckers like this who make us all look retarded
@wolfman01248 This is actually some reasonable factual information explaining that a gun is the best option for bear defense. Its people like you who use that immature name calling language that are the ones that make us hunters look retarded. That is if you are actually a hunter. This is advice, not a lesson. If you have better advice, please share. You seem to see yourself as someone who knows of better options...
@ramus001 using a bucket of water to gauge the power of the rifle however the rest of the video is accurate. I am not saying you need to pack a rifle with you whenever you go into the bush, but for extended stays its not a bad idea. we take one with us when horseback riding its not even a thought about its part of the gear when you tack up.
I handload 348 win 250 grain loads and always felt safe with them, but I have no experience killing anything larger than a deer. I stay traditional and only use the peep or open sights on my 348s' Is anyone familiar with the 348 as a defensive load ?
you offer some good advice, but guns and bear safety is bad for the general public. if you cant go into bear country unarmed, then stay home. guns in bear country are for cowards, and result in many uneeded violent conflicts and dead bears. they can hike in Iowa or somewhere safer. bear spray is great. tim treadwell was killed because he didnt have an electric fence. electirc fences are very good. 60 second marine signal flares work like a charm in alaska;/
i recently bought this same rifle for protection and hunting and i got ta say i love this thing it does pack a punch tho dont wanna shot this all day lol its a cannon!!
Check out XS Sights. They have a peep sight for the Marlin lever actions. I definitely prefer the peep sight over the stock sights. They install very easily. No gunsmithing.
I guess timmothy tradwell was one with the bears...... One with the bear's intestines that is. Okay that was messed up what i said but i guess im gonna post it anyway :/
Fantastic video! Greatly appreciate your wisdom. I'm thinking of purchasing a 'guide gun' but can't seem to decide if I should go with Marlin 450 or the 45-70. How would these two compare for for the purpose of bear defence? Am I just splitting hairs? Thanks.
@ThomasCrown79 both cartridges are more than capable of taking down a bear, you might have more load options with 45-70 but muzzle velocity on 450 is a tad bit higher, all in all they are very similar.
@gardendaisy Personally, I have ZERO faith in that miserable bear pepper spray. That crap needs to be taken off the market simply because it does NOT work during grizzly bear attacks. Thanks for the humor. I need all I can get at times :)
@MrJumBow - After successfully defending yourself against a Grizzly attack, is there a lot of paperwork with the state of Montana, or do the authorities understand the reality of living up there. Reason I ask, I am considering Montana, the landscape looks so Ozark - like, and it looks the right place for my Mossberg. P.S. Thank you for sharing your expertise too.
@MrJumBow No it only slows them down.. I was talking to a lady who sprayed the bear it charged 3 times and she sprayed it stoped grunted then charged agian.. by that time she got to the truck and drove off... she now carrys a large pistol..
@MrJumBow But thats just wrong. Pepper spray does work, been proven many times, over and over. the vast majority of people are far safer using spray. I had a split second blast go off in the house and I couldn't even breathe. A study in Canada showed it to be much more effective than a firearm for defense. shoot a bear and it can still easily kill you before it dies (just happened up by the Canadian border), spray the bear and he is non-functional. a lung choking cloud that incapacitates.
@MrJumBow not sure how u can say that. You should see examples preformed. If u get a good brand, theres no delying its effectivness. Its truely amazing stuff. Predators can't stop n 180 fast enough chargeing right into its cloud. It gets in their lungs, nasal passages and eyes, quick and fast, it intalerable 4 them. Regardless if carry'n a gun on me, I do my best 2 remember my bear spray. In th heat of a moment guns can either mis altogether or mis ideal target area. But that cloud don't mis
@frankgon4 Glad you asked. A 12 gauge shotgun will work just fine with the proper shells. I have another video out concerning 12 gauge defensive ammunition that you may wish to take a gander at. Thanks for the question :)
@dred544 The .450 Marlin is more than capable of dropping a hog in one shot. However, a caliber such as this just might be a tad large for those animals. Good question and thanks for the review :)
@dred544 Great hog gun. Shot a 250lb boar with my Marlin 1895M and he went down like he was struck by a bolt of lightning. At the time I was using Hornady's 350gr load.
Great video. Just one thing though. If you're shooting open sights in a big hurry remember to always aim low. Why? If you have to shoot in a hurry you will shoot high as you won't have a fine bead on your sights.
Great advice. Bears ain't nothing to snicker at. One piece of advice if you have to shoot quickly - aim low. Why? If you're shooting in a big hurry you will shoot high as you won't have time to get a fine bead.
@westdallasboy48 This answer to this question is a simple no. This caliber and bullet weight is much too large for these size animals. Thanks for the question :)
@massey13 Agreed. The Marlin .450, basically speaking, is a modified .45-70 Govt casing. My Marlin is the basic carbine model and she packs quite a punch. Thanks for the review :)
Nice video, I'm glad you made it so clear your gun is only for defense, some people would take this way out of context. Grizzlies are awesome animals, but the hell if I want to be anywhere near them, good advice don't trust em. BTw thats a very nice rifel, and you're using some dang good ammo. love it man IRON PLAIN AND SIMPLE!
@lobsternoob I am a native Montanan and I have lived around these species of bears most of my adult life. For the record, I do not hunt bears, not even black bears. Grizzlies are very unpredictable but I always stay armed in the back woods. Thanks for the review and comments :)
Now I know what a lovely rifle the Marlin 450 is... impressive power, with that big cartridge and its expansive flat tip / plastic tip bullet.
Bears are like banks: (as you say) respect them but never trust them.
Spiritually bonding with an animal? Rubbish. You can't even do that with your housecat, let alone a Grizzly. Nature-spiritualists, go hug trees, not bears.
@rubadux To be real honest, I have a great deal of respect for Grizzly Bears. However, these are very unpredictable animals. Let's just say that I remain very alert while I am hiking in bear country. Thanks for the comments :)
@PuddleJumpinFool I have been asked this question before if you will read the other comments. At the time of this recording, there were no bears around because I checked. Besides, just below and to the right of me, there so happened to be two Forest Service workers there on site who were spaying for NAP weed. Thanks for the review :)
the only problem with the 30-06 is that most have to get a scope mounted on it...the Browning Levers have open iron sight but they are hard to get sometimes.....marlins are good guns..great video by the way...i never enter the bush with out some protection wheather its a 12 gauge with slugs or my Browning 300 Magnum rifle with iron sight...great bush gun
@diezbassist I agree with you. This is why I prefer a short rifle or carbine with good OPEN sights. No time for target aquisition through scopes during a grizzly bear attack. The other firearms that you mentioned are excellent as well. Very recently, I purchased a Benelli Super Nova Tactical 12 gauge shotgun to be used for grizzlies are well. Wished I did NOT have to pack all this iron with me, but it is better to be safe than sorry. These bears are just too unpredictable :)
@MrJumBow Where i live there arent any grizzleys but there are black bears and the wolves you never know with wild animals they could be scare and run away or they could be scared and hit youhead on
@LittleMaggot50 YES INDEED, I would highly recommend the .30-06 cartridge. However, my best advice is to use the heaviest bullets that you can find. If I am not mistaken, a person can hand load or purchase 220 grain bullets for the .30-06. Thanks for the question and hope this helps some :)
@robin6512 What you fail to realize, is that less than 50 yards down hill from me stood two Forest Service workers whom where up there spaying or terminating NAP weed. This video was very hastily done and it is one production that I shall make another revised version of. Thanks for the review and observation. You have made a good point, however :)
I've always wanted one of these short "guide guns" for spending long periods of time in a remote cabin. Thanks for lugging the five gallons of water up the hill for the demonstration and for the good bear protection tips. I would hope that reaching for the rifle would be a last resort. I'm not sure if someone could react quick enough in thickets with low vis, and a bear at full speed. Your prevention tips are the key. The pepper spray scenario is a great point too. Thanks
@candu567 To be very candid, I have very little faith in pepper spray. And you are most correct. You need a short, easy to move around, non-scoped rifle for, especially, grizzly bear attacks. 12 gauge tactical shotguns are another type of firearm that you may wish to consider. You can fire double or triple OOxx buck shot and/or solid lead slugs out of these. I have two recent video releases demonstrating the Benelli Super Nova Tactical if you care to watch them :)
@MrJumBow Thanks for the info. I'd be interested to see the vids. I made the mistake of doing a google on the best protection for grizzlies. I'm more confused than ever. Some say slugs are too soft and have poor penetration and low section density (?). Also, whether to go for the shoulder or head... Man, I always took precautions by hanging up my food and things but never gave bears much thought. Ever since I saw some photos of mauling victims, I've been on edge when in bear country. Oh Well
@candu567 To be very honest, there exist many caliber's that would work for grizzly bear attacks. This past winter I purchased a 12 gauge Benelli Super Nova shotgun or "slug gun". 12 gauge is 72 caliber and this Benelli will fire ANY 12 gauge shot through it except for sabot rounds. Quite simply, I just would not worry about what caliber or firearm is the best. Grizzlies usually attack straight forward and come at a person from a low stance. Use a big bore caliber would be my best advice :)
@robertkalous Well to be quite honest, my wife thinks I am a tad crazy. But after 35 years of marriage I guess she has that right. She is not an outdoors person so she does not understand my logic at all. Thanks for the comment :)
you should always carry a 45 pistol too, just in case a bear does attack you, you can shoot yourself.

30 years in Alaska and a lot of bears later, this is my favorite bear setup, and it works.( I haven't become a grizzly turd yet!)

oddcarl1 1 year ago
thanks for pointing the gun at me. i too am a gun person but i don't think you need a gun every time you go into grizzly country let allow bear country . i been in many camping trips where i've seen grizzly bear tracks. I know idiot either i've have friends who have and been charged by grizzlys and killed them with a 44 remington magum . mAYBE HAVE SOME EXSERANCE WITH BEARS BEFORE YOU MAKE A VIDEO ABOUT HOW TO PROTECT YOUR SELF. a bucket is't a test for grizzly bears at all

this video is bullshit, taking shooting lessons from an ignorant hick, i am a hunter and a fisherman but its fucking redneck dumb ass motherfuckers like this who make us all look retarded
wolfman01248 1 year ago
@wolfman01248 This is actually some reasonable factual information explaining that a gun is the best option for bear defense. Its people like you who use that immature name calling language that are the ones that make us hunters look retarded. That is if you are actually a hunter. This is advice, not a lesson. If you have better advice, please share. You seem to see yourself as someone who knows of better options...

@wolfman01248 I agree the video is BS, but that is a little harsh. :~)
ramus001 1 year ago
@ramus001 using a bucket of water to gauge the power of the rifle however the rest of the video is accurate. I am not saying you need to pack a rifle with you whenever you go into the bush, but for extended stays its not a bad idea. we take one with us when horseback riding its not even a thought about its part of the gear when you tack up.

sexykatie90 1 year ago
I handload 348 win 250 grain loads and always felt safe with them, but I have no experience killing anything larger than a deer. I stay traditional and only use the peep or open sights on my 348s' Is anyone familiar with the 348 as a defensive load ?
FOXFIRECOMD1 1 year ago
you offer some good advice, but guns and bear safety is bad for the general public. if you cant go into bear country unarmed, then stay home. guns in bear country are for cowards, and result in many uneeded violent conflicts and dead bears. they can hike in Iowa or somewhere safer. bear spray is great. tim treadwell was killed because he didnt have an electric fence. electirc fences are very good. 60 second marine signal flares work like a charm in alaska;/

Fantastic video! Greatly appreciate your wisdom. I'm thinking of purchasing a 'guide gun' but can't seem to decide if I should go with Marlin 450 or the 45-70. How would these two compare for for the purpose of bear defence? Am I just splitting hairs? Thanks.
ThomasCrown79 1 year ago

@MrJumBow They say that if you find poop in the woods with little bells in it, that smells like pepper spray, the poop is probably grizzly...
BuickDoc 1 year ago
@MrJumBow But thats just wrong. Pepper spray does work, been proven many times, over and over. the vast majority of people are far safer using spray. I had a split second blast go off in the house and I couldn't even breathe. A study in Canada showed it to be much more effective than a firearm for defense. shoot a bear and it can still easily kill you before it dies (just happened up by the Canadian border), spray the bear and he is non-functional. a lung choking cloud that incapacitates.
kep67 5 months ago
@MrJumBow not sure how u can say that. You should see examples preformed. If u get a good brand, theres no delying its effectivness. Its truely amazing stuff. Predators can't stop n 180 fast enough chargeing right into its cloud. It gets in their lungs, nasal passages and eyes, quick and fast, it intalerable 4 them. Regardless if carry'n a gun on me, I do my best 2 remember my bear spray. In th heat of a moment guns can either mis altogether or mis ideal target area. But that cloud don't mis

Your thoughs on a 12 gauge or 10 gauge slug for protection from a bear?
frankgon4 1 year ago
@frankgon4 Glad you asked. A 12 gauge shotgun will work just fine with the proper shells. I have another video out concerning 12 gauge defensive ammunition that you may wish to take a gander at. Thanks for the question :)
MrJumBow 1 year ago 2
@frankgon4 Beware using the 12 gauge. Look up articles on the sectional density of a 12 gauge slug vs. rifle rounds.

would this be a good hog gun, one just to drop the hog in 1 shot
dred544 1 year ago
@dred544 The .450 Marlin is more than capable of dropping a hog in one shot. However, a caliber such as this just might be a tad large for those animals. Good question and thanks for the review :)

Great video. Just one thing though. If you're shooting open sights in a big hurry remember to always aim low. Why? If you have to shoot in a hurry you will shoot high as you won't have a fine bead on your sights.

@kw351slr As a good rule of thumb, I believe you are very correct. Thanks for the review :)

Great advice. Bears ain't nothing to snicker at. One piece of advice if you have to shoot quickly - aim low. Why? If you're shooting in a big hurry you will shoot high as you won't have time to get a fine bead.

would u recomend this gun for deer and hog hunting
westdallasboy48 1 year ago
@westdallasboy48 This answer to this question is a simple no. This caliber and bullet weight is much too large for these size animals. Thanks for the question :)
MrJumBow 1 year ago
Nice job--just fired one these rifles last weekend--a cannon--love it
massey13 1 year ago
@massey13 Agreed. The Marlin .450, basically speaking, is a modified .45-70 Govt casing. My Marlin is the basic carbine model and she packs quite a punch. Thanks for the review :)
MrJumBow 1 year ago
Nice video, I'm glad you made it so clear your gun is only for defense, some people would take this way out of context. Grizzlies are awesome animals, but the hell if I want to be anywhere near them, good advice don't trust em. BTw thats a very nice rifel, and you're using some dang good ammo. love it man IRON PLAIN AND SIMPLE!

gardendaisy 1 year ago
@gardendaisy Simply stated, I have no faith in bear sprays of any kind. However thanks for the question :)

@MrJumBow All the spray's do is make the bearshit smell like pepperspray.
klesmer 1 year ago
@gardendaisy UDAP spray? The bear has to get way too close to you and would not have faith in spray.
frankgon4 1 year ago
Now I know what a lovely rifle the Marlin 450 is... impressive power, with that big cartridge and its expansive flat tip / plastic tip bullet.
Bears are like banks: (as you say) respect them but never trust them.
Spiritually bonding with an animal? Rubbish. You can't even do that with your housecat, let alone a Grizzly. Nature-spiritualists, go hug trees, not bears.
rubadux 1 year ago
@rubadux To be real honest, I have a great deal of respect for Grizzly Bears. However, these are very unpredictable animals. Let's just say that I remain very alert while I am hiking in bear country. Thanks for the comments :)
MrJumBow 1 year ago
You left your rifle in your chair? what if a grizzly was waiting in the bushes downrange?
PuddleJumpinFool 1 year ago
@PuddleJumpinFool I have been asked this question before if you will read the other comments. At the time of this recording, there were no bears around because I checked. Besides, just below and to the right of me, there so happened to be two Forest Service workers there on site who were spaying for NAP weed. Thanks for the review :)

@phgHunter I appreciate the review and the comments. Glad you liked this video. It was not all that well done because I got in too much of a hurry :)
MrJumBow 1 year ago
the only problem with the 30-06 is that most have to get a scope mounted on it...the Browning Levers have open iron sight but they are hard to get sometimes.....marlins are good guns..great video by the way...i never enter the bush with out some protection wheather its a 12 gauge with slugs or my Browning 300 Magnum rifle with iron sight...great bush gun
diezbassist 1 year ago
@diezbassist I agree with you. This is why I prefer a short rifle or carbine with good OPEN sights. No time for target aquisition through scopes during a grizzly bear attack. The other firearms that you mentioned are excellent as well. Very recently, I purchased a Benelli Super Nova Tactical 12 gauge shotgun to be used for grizzlies are well. Wished I did NOT have to pack all this iron with me, but it is better to be safe than sorry. These bears are just too unpredictable :)
MrJumBow 1 year ago
@MrJumBow Where i live there arent any grizzleys but there are black bears and the wolves you never know with wild animals they could be scare and run away or they could be scared and hit youhead on

MrJumBow 1 year ago
are 30-06 any good for an animal coming at you?
LittleMaggot50 1 year ago
@LittleMaggot50 YES INDEED, I would highly recommend the .30-06 cartridge. However, my best advice is to use the heaviest bullets that you can find. If I am not mistaken, a person can hand load or purchase 220 grain bullets for the .30-06. Thanks for the question and hope this helps some :)
MrJumBow 1 year ago
and while he's showing the bucket and the gun is back at the seat the clever grizzly atacks....... lol
robin6512 1 year ago
@robin6512 What you fail to realize, is that less than 50 yards down hill from me stood two Forest Service workers whom where up there spaying or terminating NAP weed. This video was very hastily done and it is one production that I shall make another revised version of. Thanks for the review and observation. You have made a good point, however :)
MrJumBow 1 year ago
I've always wanted one of these short "guide guns" for spending long periods of time in a remote cabin. Thanks for lugging the five gallons of water up the hill for the demonstration and for the good bear protection tips. I would hope that reaching for the rifle would be a last resort. I'm not sure if someone could react quick enough in thickets with low vis, and a bear at full speed. Your prevention tips are the key. The pepper spray scenario is a great point too. Thanks
candu567 1 year ago
@candu567 To be very candid, I have very little faith in pepper spray. And you are most correct. You need a short, easy to move around, non-scoped rifle for, especially, grizzly bear attacks. 12 gauge tactical shotguns are another type of firearm that you may wish to consider. You can fire double or triple OOxx buck shot and/or solid lead slugs out of these. I have two recent video releases demonstrating the Benelli Super Nova Tactical if you care to watch them :)
MrJumBow 1 year ago
@MrJumBow Thanks for the info. I'd be interested to see the vids. I made the mistake of doing a google on the best protection for grizzlies. I'm more confused than ever. Some say slugs are too soft and have poor penetration and low section density (?). Also, whether to go for the shoulder or head... Man, I always took precautions by hanging up my food and things but never gave bears much thought. Ever since I saw some photos of mauling victims, I've been on edge when in bear country. Oh Well
candu567 1 year ago
@candu567 To be very honest, there exist many caliber's that would work for grizzly bear attacks. This past winter I purchased a 12 gauge Benelli Super Nova shotgun or "slug gun". 12 gauge is 72 caliber and this Benelli will fire ANY 12 gauge shot through it except for sabot rounds. Quite simply, I just would not worry about what caliber or firearm is the best. Grizzlies usually attack straight forward and come at a person from a low stance. Use a big bore caliber would be my best advice :)
